1. Introduction to NDE Studies

Near-death experience (NDE) research grew a lot between 1975 and 2025. It started with personal stories from people who had close calls with death. Over time, it became a field studied by experts in psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, cardiology, and consciousness studies. Early researchers like Raymond Moody, Russell Noyes Jr., and Michael Sabom found that many people described similar experiences. These included feeling outside their body, seeing a bright light, and feeling calm or peaceful. Later, Bruce Greyson created standard tools for studying NDEs. This helped make the research more organized and scientifically consistent.

During the 2000s and 2010s, researchers like Pim van Lommel and Sam Parnia studied people in hospitals who went through cardiac arrest and other life-threatening situations. They looked at what happened to consciousness during these events. At the same time, neuroscientists and psychologists studied possible brain-based explanations for NDEs and the long-term emotional, psychological, and spiritual effects they can have on people. By 2025, NDE research has become a recognized area of science that continues to ask important questions about consciousness, memory, and how humans experience death.
