1. Introduction to Jesus and NDEs
Across near-death experiences (NDEs), one recurring and radiant presence stands above all others: Jesus Christ. Whether he appears as a luminous Being of Light, a compassionate friend, or a divine teacher, the encounters are almost universally characterized by overwhelming love, understanding, and forgiveness. NDErs describe him as radiating a light more brilliant than the sun – yet gentle, intimate, and personal beyond words.
For some, Jesus arrives as a rescuer, answering desperate cries in the depths of despair or even hellish realms – lifting souls into light through a single call of his name. For others, he is a spirit guide, a comforter, or a teacher revealing profound truths about love, compassion, reincarnation, and the purpose of life on Earth. Children and adults alike recall his tender embrace, his eyes filled with knowing compassion, and his words of reassurance: “It’s not your time,” or “Go back and tell them about me.”
These NDE testimonies reveal that Jesus meets each soul in a uniquely personal way, perfectly suited to their needs and level of understanding. He may appear in human form, as pure radiance, or as a sphere of golden light that absorbs the soul into divine love. He teaches that heaven is not a distant place but a living reality of love within and around all beings.
This article gathers a wide range of these powerful NDE testimonies – spanning rescues from darkness, visions of heaven, revelations of future events, and teachings about reincarnation and divine purpose. Together, they portray Jesus not as a remote figure of theology, but as an ever-present, living consciousness of love – active in the lives of humanity today, and recognizable to NDErs. For example, Betty Eadie described her experience with Jesus: “His light was knowledge. It had power to fill me with all truth… I understood that he was life itself, love itself, and his love gave me a fullness of joy.” There are many different descriptions of the appearance of Jesus which is because, as one person put it, Jesus appears to us in a way that we can recognize him. You will find all the various descriptions of Jesus from NDE testimonies in this article. You will find interesting quotes and NDE insights concerning Jesus.

3. Interesting Experiences With Jesus
a. Experiencers on Jesus and His Second Coming
In 1976, Jesus told a man (V.P.) that his Second Coming would occur in his lifetime: “I felt a love I had never felt before and realized Jesus wanted everyone in Heaven! I also realized Jesus had been part of my life all along, and I would not be in Heaven then if not for Him! I asked God if there was anything I could do to help, and He asked me what I would like to do. ‘I want to go back to Earth and live as a Christian for You.’ ‘You can stay until the end; I will be coming soon – in your lifetime. Tell everyone about Me.’ I asked Jesus if, upon returning to Earth, I could work for Him? “Yes, I will train you and make you a leader.”
In 1972, Jesus told Dr. Richard Eby that his Second Coming would occur in his lifetime: Jesus told Dr.Richard Eby in 1972 that he would be alive when Jesus’ Second Coming occurs. However, Dr. Eby died in 2002 and apparently the Second Coming has not occurred. With Eby’s prophecy an apparent failure, skeptics and fundamentalists Christians alike labeled Dr. Eby a “false prophet” and questioned his entire NDE. I present my arguments why Eby is not a false prophet, nor is his prophecy a failure, and includes a detailed account of his amazing NDE testimony. It is quite possible Jesus has already returned through reincarnation and is alive today. There is strong Biblical and extra-Biblical evidence of Jesus teaching reincarnation as the real interpretation of bodily rebirth known as the “Resurrection of the Dead.”
b. Experiencers on Jesus and Reincarnation
Jesus told John C. that reincarnation is a fact, but “reincarnation isn’t as we perceive it.”
Jesus asked Jeanie Dicus if she wanted to be reincarnated.
Jesus gave Sandra Rogers who attempted suicide the choice to either reincarnate or return to Earth.
Steven D. received complete knowledge of everything during his NDE. When seeking to know Jesus better, he was told to seek the testimony of Thomas, the disciple of Jesus, suggesting the authenticity of the Gospel of Thomas which describes Jesus teaching reincarnation.
Carl G. learned about reincarnation from Jesus: “I was shot through a tunnel of light. I was standing before Christ, the light behind Him, was so bright, you could not look at with human eyes. He told me, ‘No you must return for this reason, you will have a son born unto you.’ (Three years later to the very day my son Julian was born.) Christ showed me my whole life, the good, the bad, and all the rest. Then Christ said, ‘That is alright, life is a learning experience.’ I was there for some time and Christ showed me much during that time. Some I was able to bring back with me. Christ gave me a message to tell all: Christ said, ‘Tell them they must learn to love all that is around you. They must learn to love our God OR return to this world and live life all over again. OR they will lay down next to sleeping waters and drink from thereof.'”
Scott S. learned about reincarnation during his life review: “My life review was not just of a single life but a review of several past lives. I also had a life preview showing me the future. I had answers to many religious and spiritual mysteries that were uploaded into my consciousness… My past life previews traveled through time, witnessing spiritual events with figures like Buddha, Yeshua (Jesus), and esoteric teachers from history. Being in a coma for nine days gave me ample time for these visions.”
Edgar Cayce learned that Jesus would return in the year 1998. Critics who are not very familiar with the Cayce material have pointed out that 1998 has come and gone and the Second Coming has not occurred. Such critics wrongly expect the Second Coming to happen when Jesus appears in the sky with a chorus of angels while Gabriel blows a horn and dead bodies crawl out of their graves. This idea of the resurrection was the result of a misunderstanding of the concept of reincarnation – the ancient concept of birth and rebirth.
c. Experiencers on Jesus’ Being of Light Transformations
Natacha P. realized that the Being of Light could not appear in its true form and full goodness, but offered her the choice of what form it would take.
Sandi T. asked the Being of Light what it was. The Being replied that she could call it whatever felt right – names like “angel,” “guide,” or “God” were common but merely reflected personal beliefs.
Mellen-Thomas Benedict had a conversation with the Light who kept changing into different figures, such as Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, mandalas, archetypal images and signs. Mellen-Thomas asked the Light to clarify itself. The Light responded that your religious beliefs shape the kind of feedback you are getting before the light. If you were a Buddhist or Catholic or Fundamentalist, you get a feedback loop of your own stuff. The man then became aware that he was seeing humanity’s Higher Self matrix – a mandala of human souls within each of us.
NDE researcher Dr. Raymond Moody says the identity of the Being of Light is a function of the NDEr’s religious background.
NDE researcher Todd Murphy says the Being of Light transforms into an Entity according to the religious expectations.
Anke Evertz saw the Being of Light transform into Jesus, Buddha, a Native American chief, and a bear, according to what she wanted.
May Eulitt and two friends had a group NDE where they saw the Being of Light transform into an angel, Buddha, and a Naval officer.
Rabia Malek saw four figures surrounded by a light (Jesus, Mohammed, Shiva the Hindu god, and a woman)
Martin J. was told that Jesus was a manifestation of God.
d. Experiencers on Jesus as a Familiar Friend
Derry B. recognized Jesus as a familiar friend without being told it was him.
When Seth C. met Jesus, “it was like we always knew each other and he loved me so much!”
When Jeff S. met Jesus, “I knew immediately that this man was Jesus. I never saw him before, but I knew that he was the master and my Lord. I understood that he knew every fine detail about me.”
Vicki W. knew she was meeting Jesus after hugging him.
Jesus gave Alfred A. a hug surrounding him with light and bathing him in bliss and love.
e. Experiencers on Jesus and the Future
Jesus showed James C. the future of the world: “Wars, strife, no rain, death, earthquakes, etc.”
Jesus told Carmel Bell that her future husband would be named “Bernie.” Later in life she meet a man named Bernie whom she married.
Jesus had a child (Clara) look into a television-like device to see her future.
Jesus told George Ritchie that he had 45 years to accomplish his mission in life. When Dr. Ritchie was revived, he had no idea what he was supposed to accomplish within 45 years. Years afterward, his NDE attracted the attention of Dr. Raymond Moody. It was Ritchie’s NDE that inspired Moody to begin his ground-breaking research into NDEs and become “the father” of the NDE. In 1985, Ritchie published his NDE testimony which was 42 years after his NDE occurred.
Jesus poured pure love within a boy (Guenter Wagner) whose entire soul was immersed in love. Jesus told him that he needed to be cleansed. Jesus lifted him up and placed him into a red light. Afterward, Jesus took him to the top of a mountain to converse. Jesus told him that there were very powerful and cunning beings who were his enemies with whom he had been constantly fighting. Jesus told him to warn the world against them. Then Jesus told him to turn around. When he did he heard people screaming and saw fire and smoke that gradually took on the shape of a mushroom. Jesus told the boy that he will do everything in his power to prevent this from happening. Jesus told him that this war has been going on for a very long time and the evil beings had become more and more powerful. Jesus said that if this continued he would not see any means of preventing them from taking over everything. He said that if the enemy had really succeeded in coming into his world, the war would have been lost. He would have been powerful enough, no doubt, to fight them off, but the war would have been lost in the long run. Jesus was afraid of loosing this war. Then it was intimated to the boy that Jesus needed help. Jesus told him that the only way he could help him was by going back and telling the world about his experience. Jesus told the boy that he would become a new type of teacher. He said the boy was going to teach while being in a sort of sleep. While asleep, Guenter would be able to hear and talk. Jesus said that people will come to him and ask him questions. What he will say while asleep will be of much importance. [Note: This is exactly how Edgar Cayce had his out-of-body journeys to heaven to obtain information.] Jesus told the boy to write down everything that happened to him. Jesus then took him back into time to the Stone Age to observe early humans. Afterward, Jesus lead him through a life review.
More NDE testimonies about Jesus and the Future.
f. Experiencers on Jesus and the Cross
Dr. Gerald Landry saw Jesus on the cross during his NDE.
Christine S. “became everything that Jesus was” and experienced what Jesus experienced while on the cross.
Don Brubaker traveled back in time to witness the crucifixion of Jesus.
Rev. George Rodonaia traveled back in time and lived in the minds of Jesus and his disciples.
Jesus appeared to Shannon C. with holes in his hands and told her she “still had a job to do.”
Jesus appeared to Micki P. with holes in his hands and feet.
Jesus appeared to Nathan L. and “did the sign of the cross and told me it wasn’t my time.”
g. Miscellaneous Experiencers on Jesus
Jesus told Guy S. that his mission in life is to “find out about all aspects of love.”
Jesus told John J. Davis, “You must tell them there is no death.”
Edward C. states, “The light was literally made of LOVE. Everything I ever wanted was with the light and the light was Jesus Christ himself.”
Tamara J. was in the presence of Jesus which felt like “every cell of my being was at peace and I had the joy of loving myself and being loved the way I always wanted to be.”
Bella K. learned all the answers to her questions merely by looking into Jesus’ eyes.
Cathy H. saw Jesus holding her five-year old son who died two years earlier.
Jesus touched Chris M. on the forehead with two fingers and said it was not his time to die.
Sara G. saw Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Jesus was dressed like a shepherd.
Charles T. “saw Jesus riding the prettiest white horse I have ever seen.” Note: Jesus is seen in heaven riding a white horse (Rev. 19:11-16)
Caren J. saw Jesus in a white robe sitting in a green lawn chair.
Before an 8-year-old with cancer passed away, the child had an NDE where Jesus was seen driving a school bus. Such NDEs experienced by children, transformed a pediatric oncologist from Yale (Dr. Diane Komp) from an atheist to a person convinced that NDEs are real spiritual experiences.
John P. was in the presence of Jesus who expressed unconditional love and acceptance toward him. Jesus then reached out and gave him a hug. The hug was symbolic of the lack of affection that John experienced from being a neglected child. At that point, John was healed from his past. Jesus then told him to go and hug others.
Sandra Rogers asked the Light, whom she identified as Jesus, how people from other religions get to heaven. She was shown that the group, or organization, that people profess alliance to is inconsequential. What is important is how we show our love for God by the way we treat each other. She learned that this is because when we pass to the spiritual realm we will all be met by Jesus.
David Oakford was told that Jesus is the being who is entrusted by God to ensure that souls evolve. He was told that Jesus is of the highest in vibration than any other soul. He said that God holds Jesus in the highest of favor because he was the best example of what humans need to do.
Jesus appeared to Dr. George Ritchie as a Being of Light. Far more than power, what emanated from this presence was an astonishing unconditional love. It was a love beyond his wildest imagining. It was a love that knew every unlovable thing about him – the quarrels with his stepmother, his explosive temper, the sex thoughts he could never control, every mean, selfish thought and action since the day he was born-and accepted him just the same. After a life review, George is give a guided tour of the afterlife with Jesus.
The following is Betty Eadie‘s amazing NDE encounter with Jesus: “I saw a pinpoint of light in the distance. As I approached it, I noticed the figure of a man standing in it, with the light radiating all around him. As I got closer the light became brilliant – brilliant beyond any description, far more brilliant than the sun. I saw that the light immediately around him was golden, as if his whole body had a golden halo around it, and I could see that the golden halo burst out from around him and spread into a brilliant, magnificent whiteness that extended out for some distance. I felt his light blending into mine. And as our lights merged, I felt as if I had stepped into his countenance, and I felt an utter explosion of love. It was the most unconditional love I have ever felt, and as I saw his arms open to receive me I went to him and received his complete embrace. I felt his enormous spirit and knew that I had always been a part of him, that in reality I had never been away from him. I knew that he was aware of all my sins and faults, but that they didn’t matter right now. He just wanted to hold me and share his love with me, and I wanted to share mine with him. There was no questioning who he was. I knew that he was my Savior, and friend, and God. He was Jesus Christ, who had always loved me, even when I thought he hated me. He was life itself, love itself, and his love gave me a fullness of joy, even to overflowing. I knew that I had known him from the beginning, from long before my Earth life, because my spirit remembered him. His light now began to fill my mind, and my questions were answered even before I fully asked them. His light was knowledge. It had power to fill me with all truth. As I gained confidence and let the light flow into me, my questions came faster than I thought possible, and they were just as quickly answered. I understood that he was the Son of God, though he himself was also a God, and that he had chosen from before the creation of the world to be our Savior. I understood, or rather, I remembered, his role as creator of the Earth. His mission was to come into the world to teach love. This knowledge was more like remembering.”
4. NDE Descriptions of Jesus
a. Jesus Appears Like the Paintings of Him But Not Exactly
On the left is a painting of Jesus entitled “Prince of Peace” by eight-year old Akiane Kramarik. On the right is a painting of Jesus by former art professor and NDEr Howard Storm. Note the similarities between the two paintings. Kramarik professed she saw the face of Jesus in her dreams and visions. Howard Storm met Jesus during an NDE. Kramarik is a self-taught painter and says that Jesus spoke to her when she was four-years old, encouraging her to draw and paint her visions. According to Kramarik, her main inspiration comes from her visions of heaven and her religious experiences. By age 12, she had completed sixty large paintings. She has completed over 200 artworks and 800 literary works and has published two best-selling books. In 2019, “Prince of Peace” was sold to a private collector for $850,000. “Prince of Peace” was featured in the child NDEr Colton Burpo‘s book and film entitled “Heaven Is For Real.” When Burpo saw “Prince of Peace” on TV, he told his father, “Dad, that one’s right.”
Other NDE References To Paintings of Jesus
Appearance (like most paintings), Robe (white): “I was suddenly in front of a great Light. It had to have been God! It was so powerful that no words can describe it. The closest I can come is to say it was like being suddenly placed a few feet from the Sun; but instead of feeling heat, you feel Love, infinite Love. The Love emanated out in all directions in slow, gentle rays of light. Never can I forget it… A vision of a man appeared down to the right of the powerful Light. I presumed it was Jesus. He looked like he does in most paintings. He was wearing a white robe and was extending his hands out to greet me.” (Tom S.)
Appearance (like pictures, but not exactly), Robe (blue), Hair (golden blond): “It didn’t take me very long to figure out who just walked down from the sky. It was Jesus Christ… Well I knew it was because I just knew it, he looked ‘somewhat’ like all the pictures I had seen on Earth of him but then not exactly like all the pictures… He was dressed in this long robe, which was blue; he was a slender man (being) much more handsome than ever depicted in his pictures on Earth. His hair was a loose curly golden blond-haired person kind of long but not too long.” (Gary D.)
Appearance (like portraits, but not exactly): “Amidst some commotion, through the back came Jesus Christ, and there was no mistake as to who he was. He looked like the artist’s portraits, but not meek and mild, as often portrayed, he was healthy and robust. He put his arm around me.” (Linda S.)
Appearance (not like paintings), Hair (dark), Skin (medium skin tone): “I only saw this person from the waist up. I knew immediately it was Jesus Christ himself! Let me tell you, he does not look like the pictures and paintings we have of him… I will say that he has a medium skin tone and dark hair.” (Genny H.)
Appearance (not like traditional images), Eyes (shooting fire): Ralph Duncan was dying of leukemia and had an NDE during which he encountered Jesus who appeared as an luminous being and did not look anything like the traditional images of him. Jesus’ eyes were “shooting fire” and he communicated a telepathic message: “That’s enough, it’s dead, it’s gone.” Ralph understood this to mean that he no longer had leukemia. Through Jesus’ eyes “shooting fire” and saying “That’s enough,” it was understood to mean, in effect, “I’ve zapped you with enough voltage for this to cure you.” Ralph later recovered from his leukemia.” (Dr. Kenneth Ring)
Appearance (not like pictures), Robe (toga), Hair (brown, wavy), Eyes (dark and kind), Skin (tan): “As I moved towards them, I noticed another pair of feet to the right. They were dirty, large, and calloused. I looked up and saw a man who was dressed in a raw-edged, cream-colored, linen toga. He had tan skin, a sharp jaw and nose, a beard and moustache, and brown, wavy hair. He had dark, knowing and kind eyes… I quickly figured out it was Jesus. Although the picture I had of him before all of this was the classic, blue-eyed pale-skinned man from typical pictures painted of Jesus. This man did not look like that, but I still knew it was Him.” (Sarah S.)
Appearance (like Frances Hook’s “Head of Christ”): “[I encountered] a Holy being so filled with love and forgiveness, I searched afterwards to find a picture of what I saw. I finally found a pencil drawing by Frances Hook of Jesus with the children. That is the closest image of a Holy Being to what I saw although I’d never seen that particular picture before my NDE experience.” (Chamisa H.)
Appearance (like “Sacred Heart” picture): “To me he looked like the picture of the ‘Sacred Heart,’ the one looking upward.” (Stanley Villavicencio)
b. Jesus as a Being of Light
Robe (white), Hair (brownish gray): “Suddenly, I was floating above my body and was face-to-face with what I knew to be Jesus. He was wearing a white robe and had brownish, gray hair. I saw a light, the brightest illumination of white that overshadowed everything at that moment. I felt such a peace that I’ve never felt before. It was surreal… Jesus stretched out his hand in front of me and said, ‘It’s not your time yet.” (Renata D.)
Sandals (some sort of): “I saw the figure of a man who stood over a sort of stream… I saw his feet, which were shod in some sort of sandals, and I saw his attire. All was dazzling in him – he seemed to be made of light. I felt extremely good in his presence and full of an unconditional, absolute love. I knew inside of me that he was Jesus Christ (who I didn’t believe in) and I was surprised. I said ‘But you don’t exist…!’. He replied ‘Live’ and his voice sounded warm and sweet, but I didn’t want to return.” (Irene A.)
Robe (white and blue), Eyes and Skin (perfect): “I saw Jesus standing before me. I couldn’t believe this was true until he moved. He was brilliant, love radiated from him and he knew who I was and everything about me. He was perfect (for lack of a better word) his skin, his hair, his eyes; they were like nothing I have seen before or since. His robe was white and blue all on piece but yet blended into one garment. His gaze was of acceptance, recognition, and love. His arms reached out to me and his hands were bidding me to come closer. In eagerness, I ran to him.” (Roxanne H.)
Robe, Hair (shoulder length): “Now this light that started as a pinprick grew and grew AND it had a figure in the middle of it. The light FELT like the best, greatest LOVE – more than I ever had felt in my life. The light was white – a soft, unworldly white. No white on Earth. LOVE. The presence in the light wore a robe and had shoulder length hair, beard, looked like Jesus to my young eyes. ‘Jesus’ had his arms spread out a little distance from his body as in the gesture of saying, come unto me.” (Elaine S.)
Robe (white with golden sash), Sandals (golden): “I thought I was standing there by myself, and then, all of a sudden, a man showed up in front of me. Nobody told me it was him; I just knew that it was Jesus. He was different from everyone else. I could see his hands, and I could see his feet. I could see what he was wearing. He had a white robe on with a golden sash around his waist, and he had gold-colored sandals that laced up his calves, but he was so bright I couldn’t make out his facial features. Jesus had so much energy and so much light that was pouring out of him. He said something to me, and it is something I have tried to do my entire life since then. It was like my assignment somehow. Jesus said, “You must tell them there is no death.” (John J. Davis)
A man describes Jesus this way: “There standing before me was Jesus in all His glory, bigger than life itself. He wore the same clothes as I did, and He radiated a powerful golden light in every direction from His body.” (Odell H.)

c. Jesus as a Being of Love
Robe (gown with tunic), Hair (brown), Eyes (dark brown), Sandals (around ankles): “I looked in the smiling face of a man, who said his name was Jesus. He told me not to be frightened; he was here to take me back. He had shoulder length brown hair and dark brown eyes. He was wearing leather sandals on his feet with straps that went between his toes and tied around his ankles. He had on a long white gown with long gig sleeves, with a long light blue tunic over it. There was a gold color rope tied around his waist. His voice was very soft and kind, almost musical, and I felt a feeling of pure love, complete safety and trust.” (Marilyn R.)
Robe (white tunic), Hair (dark), Eyes (dark, loving), Sandals: “Someone was waiting for me where the path ended. I knew it was Jesus. He was tall and strong, with long dark hair and a wonderful tender smile. His eyes were unforgettable, immense, dark, so loving and full of wisdom… He was wearing a long white tunic, and sandals.” (Pepi)
Eyes (blue), Skin (dark): “There before me was the most BEAUTIFUL man I have ever seen in my whole life! The look on his face was pure LOVE and excitement. I have never ever had anyone look at me like this. His eyes were wide with excitement and overflowing with LOVE and JOY. The Bluest Blue I have seen in my life. He was young, tall, dark and the handsomest man alive. There is no living person to ever exist that could match the BEAUTY of Jesus Christ. He was perfect in every sense of the word.” (Sarah W.)
Eyes (dark): “I turned to my right in the midst of that stream and looked straight into the eyes of Jesus… I shall never forget his eyes. They were dark and so full of love. I knew he knew everything about me from inside… I felt no fear at all. Just the strongest love I have ever felt from anyone anywhere in my entire existence. That love was real and sort of wrapped me up and cuddled me. Not Jesus, but the love, which poured from Him to me, was almost tangible.” (Linda K.)
Hair (dark, wavy, long), Eyes (brown): “Then, Jesus walked up to me. He was tall and so beautiful! His hair was dark and wavy, and very long down to his waist. His skin was dark and his eyes were a warm, liquid-brown. Jesus had a smile that melted my heart. He told me that He loved me, that He had walked beside me every day of my life. He told me that He had never left my side and never would leave my side, not ever.” (Sharon Milliman)
Eyes (green-blue), Skin (tan): “I was with Jesus who was also sitting the same way. He was tall with beautiful, tan skin. His eyes were the most vibrant green-blue that I had never seen. His eyes looked like jewels. They were so full of love and I felt full of love and comfort, acceptance and utter joy.” (Katie W.)
Robe (white), Hair (windy), Eyes (beautiful): “I then saw Jesus standing about three feet from me. When I saw him, I felt the most love I have ever felt in my life. I called him by name and he answered me – his lips did not move but I heard him in my head. He was beautiful. He had beautiful eyes and was smiling. His hair seemed to move in a slight wind. I saw what I thought was a gorgeous Christmas ornament pinned to the front of his white robe.” (Beth L.)
Robe (white), Hair (brown), Skin (copper): “He was glowing, with long brown hair, copper skin, and a long white robe. The feeling of love and being home was awesome. I reached up and put my hand in his. We spoke with our minds and he gave me a guided tour of heaven.” (JC S.)
Robe (white), Hair (dark): “I looked around and realized I was sitting on a man’s lap, who was dressed in white robes. He had dark hair. At first, I thought it was my deceased father in his younger years. Then I thought it was my first husband who had passed on in 1981. Then I knew it was Jesus. He held me and comforted me. No words were spoken but the love and peace.” (Mary L.)
Robe (white), Hair (fair), Skin (fair): “A person (Jesus) standing in front of me of fair hair and complexion and appearing around early thirties in age. He had long hair and I can’t recall if he had a beard or not now… Standing, in a robe with his arms raised to his shoulder height and straight. He was smiling a smile expressing peace and love. He was dressed in white and although the cross he stood in front of dominated him due to its shear physical size.” (Miles)
d. Miscellaneous NDE Descriptions of Jesus
Appearance (red sash), Robe (white, cloak), Hair (brown, curly): “Jesus wore a white roman like cloak from his neck to his feet with long arm sleeves that were very loose. A red loose ban of clothing stretched from his left shoulder across the chest to his right waist. He had long brown curly hair that dangled to his shoulder length. Everything happened so fast that I didn’t see his wounds in his hands, face, nor see the color of his eyes.” (Jeff S.)

5. A Comparison of NDE Descriptions of Jesus
Perhaps the greatest reason why Jesus is described in differing ways in NDEs can best be described by Margaret Tweddell who revealed that Jesus appears in a way that you can recognize him and/or just as you’ve always imagined you see him. He shows himself to us according to our own understanding. The reason for this is that souls can appear in any form they desire. This phenomenon shows up in many NDE testimonies. For example, Beings of light asked Howard Storm if he wanted them to change their appearance so that he wouldn’t be frightened. Hal had a life review and the Being who led him through his life review transformed from a ball of light into a hooded and robed figure. Ignorant souls in the dark realms can transform themselves into hideous creatures with melting faces and foul odors, for example. Even the experiencers, such as Reinee Pasarow, can transform themselves into an orb of light. With this in mind, here are a few NDE descriptions of Jesus.

6. Quotes By Jesus During NDEs
Jesus explained to Ashli why it is ridiculous to be mad at God: “Jesus told me that, not only did I have enough goodness in me, but that despite a few weaknesses, that I will mature and that I am destined to go to heaven by virtue of who I am. I asked, ‘Who am I then? Why is this such a big deal ‘who I am?’ Jesus explained that there are different levels of goodness. Some people have potential for goodness and they can get into heaven, some people are basically born with so much goodness already in them that they don’t have to try very hard to get into heaven. Then there are those who were descendants of God’s original energy who God is drawing ‘Back unto himself.’ I told Jesus that I didn’t understand God and that I was still a little bit mad at God for allowing all of the suffering on Earth. Jesus told me that it was basically ridiculous of me to be mad at God because that’s like being mad at my own arm or leg. He said that we all have spiritual jobs to complete on Earth. I told Jesus that whatever my job is, I don’t want it and I’m too tired to do it anymore. I feel like Jesus almost laughed, but it was like he was slightly amused and simultaneously worried about me.”
Jesus ordered Lariza GWT to return to life because of her mission: “In the garden to the right were two people; one wore a white tunic and had bare feet. It was Jesus Christ and beside him was my brother who had died of a car accident when I was eight years old. When I reached them, my brother asked me, ‘What are you doing here?’ Jesus told me, ‘GO BACK. It is not your time. You have to go back because I gave you a mission. You’re already a MOM!’”
Jesus told Douglas T. to tell others about him: “The one thing I immediately picked up on was an inner peace like no other. Then I reached then end of the tunnel. What I saw was amazing, it was Jesus. I asked him why. He replied, ‘If [you] want to enter here you have to change.’ I said, ‘But I don’t want to go, it’s so peaceful here.’ Jesus said, ‘You have to go back. It’s not your time yet.’ I again said, ‘I don’t want to go.’ Jesus said, ‘Tell them about me.’ I said, ‘I’ll give them hell.’ Jesus grimaced as if he didn’t care for that comment. My last words to him was, you know what I mean. This was said as I was going back to Earth.”
Jesus told Mabel G. that she was forgiven: “Suddenly, I was standing in the valley of the shadow of death with a small stream of water running at my feet. On the other side, facing me was Jesus! His hands were held out to me; his face expressed love. His message to me (although His lips did not move) was ‘I love you and forgive you your sins and I will wait with you until God decides whether you are to go home now or later.'”
Jesus told Jedraine C. to spread the love of God: “Soon Jesus appeared in front of me and I could do nothing but fall to my knees and then lay my head on the floor at his feet. It was like that for an eternity and then Jesus said, ‘You are worthy child, rise.’ So I did and faced the Lord Jesus Christ with utmost guilt and feelings of utter insignificance. Jesus said, ‘You have learned from your mistakes my child. You will return, and you will show others the way. You will spread the love of God.'”
Jesus asked Steven C. if he believed he created the universe: “I was in this void of darkness and without hope, and I spoke. I said, ‘Where am I?’ I could hear the words. A great love came down, saved me, and lifted me up; I was going to perish; I was in deep, deep trouble. All I had to do was except it; in your wildest imagine you cannot believe how good Jesus is. He spoke and said to my ears, ‘Do you believe I created the universe?’ and I said, ‘Yes’.”
Jesus told Anthony M. that he wasn’t sending him back “empty handed.” Jesus then healed him: “Jesus must have read my mind because he said, ‘No one is going to go through what you went through and go back empty handed. I’m going to send you back with something.’ So with his right hand, he grabbed my right hand. Then with his left hand, he placed it and cuddled the back of my head. All of my pain disappeared at that point.”
Jesus affirmed to Terry E. that people come to Jesus on many religious paths: “I did not experience a tunnel, but rather was enveloped in a beautiful light of love and knew I was being held on the lap of Jesus like a child. It is a feeling of unconditional love… I did not have a life review, but rather Jesus and I had an astounding conversation where he patiently answered all my questions… In response to my question regarding religions of the world and which is the ‘true’ religion, HE answered ‘Men come to me on many paths,’ and I had the complete understanding of the response, which is broader than the words can convey. The point is not religion, but faith. In response to my question about why we are here, HE answered ‘To love one another.’ Again, the understanding and meaning of HIS answer is so much more than the words. We are each part of HIM and by loving one another (and ourselves), we are in fact loving HIM.”
Jesus repeatedly told Eric A. to wake up and that it wasn’t his time to die: “He (Jesus) lifted me up in his arms and I was completely filled with his light and his love completely. It was the most incredible feeling I have ever experienced and I didn’t want to leave. Even though I couldn’t see him I knew this was Jesus. He said to me, ‘This isn’t your time; I still have plans for you. So wake up now Eric and know that I love you. I love you so much, so wake up now.’ He kept repeating these words until I did wake up.”
Jesus told Gary D. that he would live a long life: “Jesus spoke to me again, in my head, not through my ears. He said, ‘I have work to do through you one day.’ I thought back to him, ‘Any time, I will do anything you ask.’ He said, ‘You will have a long life.’ I thought back, ‘Thank You.'”
Jesus told John F. his mission was incomplete and that he would know it when the time comes: “Soon I saw Jesus standing in front of me. He asked me what I wanted of him. I told him I had learned I would have to return to Earth and I did not want to leave this Heavenly place. He explained to me that I had not yet performed his wishes that he had set forth for me in my lifetime. I asked him what some wishes of his were and he did not answer me. He said I would know at the right time, sometime in my future.”
Lynn , a 13-year-old child with a heart condition, asked Jesus during an NDE if he gave her the heart condition so that she would have a cross to carry like he did as her sixth-grade teacher told her. Jesus replied, “No, this heart condition of yours is not a cross from me for you to bear. This heart condition is a challenge to help you grow and stay compassionate.”
Jesus told Randy Gehling that he should never worry if people doubted his story or could not understand what he was telling them. “One day, everyone will come to see for themselves what you have seen.”
Jesus told Betty Eadie to “go learn of things”: “As Jesus was about to leave me with them, I felt his amusement again, and he seemed to whisper to my spirit, ‘Go learn of things,’ and I understood that I was free to see and experience all that I wanted.”
During Dr. Richard Eby‘s NDE, Jesus commanded him to tell people that: “These are the last days before I return for my body of believers. I am coming for them soon!” Jesus explained that he would be giving some of his children much documenting evidence to validate his prophecies. Jesus told Eby that: “I need eyewitnesses of my glory and truth now. You are but one. Go, tell them. There is but a little while until I come for my body of believers.”
Vicki Umipeg, blind since birth, saw for the first time in her life during her NDE. She saw Jesus during her NDE. She noticed that he is a figure of great radiance. Jesus greeted her tenderly while she conveyed her excitement to him about her newfound omniscience and her joy at being there with him. Telepathically, Jesus said to her: “Isn’t it wonderful? Everything is beautiful here, and it fits together. And you’ll find that. But you can’t stay here now. It’s not your time to be here yet and you have to go back.”
Jesus lifted Linda Stewart from the Void and into the light filling her with ecstasy and love. She realized that the only reality is God and that there is no other. And God is love. She turned to Jesus and said, “This is beautiful. I am home. This is where I want to be. I want to stay.” And Christ answered: “You can stay for a little while and then you must return.”
“In the NDE documentary video entitled “Shadows”, Cindy Massey described a conversation she had with Jesus about having to return to life during her NDE. Describing this conversation with Jesus to others is difficult for her. She stated, “This parts really hard. As many times as I tell it, I keep thinking I’m going to get through this [sobbing].”
Cindy: “I want to come home now.”
Jesus: “No, you can’t” He replied.
Cindy: “But I don’t want to stay there anymore. I don’t like it.”
Jesus: “I know that.”
Cindy: “Well, I just want to come home. They are very mean down there. I don’t like it.”
Jesus: “I grieve for you and what they’ve done to you. And I grieve for what they do to each other. I grieve deeply. I hurt for you and for all of you. You have to go back. You have to return.”
Cindy: “Why?”
Jesus: “Because you promised me.”
Cindy: “But I can do it another time and another place.”
Jesus: “There is no other time. There is no other place. You must do it this time. You promised.”
Cindy: “Well, you don’t understand.” When Cindy looked into his eyes, she knew he did.
Jesus: “You promised me, child, it would be this time. You must return but I promise you I will be back when it is time for you to go.”
Cindy: “I don’t know what I am supposed to do.”
Jesus: “You’ll know. You’ll know when it’s time and you’ll know what to do.'”
7. NDE Insights Concerning Jesus
The fact that Christianity is so dominant in the West may be the reason that the Being of Light appears in the form of Jesus so frequently in western NDEs. To Buddhists, the Being of Light often appears in the form of Buddha. To Jews, the Being of Light may appear in the form as Adam (as revealed in the Zohar) or the Jewish Messiah. To Hindus, the Being of Light may appear as the Lord of Death.”
Edgar Cayce stated that before the universe was created, every soul that ever existed and will exist, including Jesus, was created by God. Millions of years ago, some of these souls entered into the universe and some entered the path of the Earth and desired to experience it. They began to possess the bodies of ape-men and through the process of millions of years of evolution became homo sapiens. The race of humanity was influenced by a soul who had completed its experience of creation and returned to God. This is the soul known as Jesus. After reincarnating as the Biblical personalities of Adam, Enoch, Melchizedek, Joshua, and David (to name a few), Jesus knew that he needed to create a pattern for humans to follow to attain at-onement with God to lead them back to their heavenly origins. He did this through his final incarnation as the humble carpenter from Galilee. By becoming triumphant over death and the body, he laid down a way for people to follow to crucify self and the ego and return to God.
P.M.H. Atwater researched the identity of the initial greeters met in near-death states. She discovered that religious figures usually conform to the predominant religion the experiencer was exposed to, but not always. Jesus has appeared in near-death scenarios of Jewish people, for instance; a Muslim man once told her he was met by Buddha.
According to Edgar Cayce, the so-called “trinity” that Christians talk about (i.e., Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) is actually how God can be viewed from the Earth’s three-dimensional perspective. That is, God can be viewed three-dimensionally as Mind, Body, and Spirit. In this sense, the trinity can be explained as the “Mind of God”, the “Body of God,” and the “Spirit of God.” The Bible describes this as the “Mind of Christ” which is the Son – the light of God. The “Body of Christ” which is the Father – the life of God. And the “Spirit of Christ” which is the Holy Spirit – the love of God. This is why Jesus said that “you are gods.” In other words, all humans can become as Jesus was: one with the Mind of God, the Body of God, and the Spirit of God.
Brian Krebs learned that: “The way out of the Void (outer darkness) is simple. You must think of love. If you are a Christian and you think of Jesus and you see Jesus as love, then you will be thinking of love. To recognize love as a reality is the key to escaping from the Void.”
According to Edgar Cayce, the Biblical references to the title of “Christ” (the anointed one) is a reference to the divine consciousness within human beings. In this respect, it can be said that Jesus and Buddha became “Christs” because they were a manifestation of the divine nature in humanity. This divine nature is also known by other titles in various religious traditions such as: Dharmakaya, Brahman, Collective Unconscious, and Universal Consciousness. This union of the human with the divine is the ultimate goal of everyone and is spiritually possible for all.
NDE researcher Nora Spurgin writes:, “The higher one’s soul development, the brighter the light will shine from their spirit. What determines what one looks like in the spirit world is the person’s quality of heart and life. One’s inner quality is perceived as light. One’s features are visible but the light that comes from their very essence is the identifying feature. For example, because they lived totally for other people, Jesus and other religious leaders emanate brilliant light.”
8. Religious Insights Concerning Jesus
The following is an example in the Bible of Jesus teaching his disciples about the reincarnation of Elijah as John the Baptist: Jesus said, “For all the prophets and the law have prophesied until John. And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who was to come.” … And the disciples asked him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” But he answered them and said: “Elijah indeed is to come and will restore all things. But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also shall the Son of Man suffer at their hand.” Then the disciples understood that he had spoken of John the Baptist … “But I tell you, Elijah has come.” (Matthew 11:13-14; Matthew 17:10-13; Mark 9:13)
Elizabeth Claire Prophet wrote, “The main controversy during the early Church age was about the nature of humanity and how humanity is saved. It involved two pictures of Jesus: Either he was God who had always been God or he was a human who became God’s Son. If he was a human who became God’s Son, then that implied that other humans could also become Sons of God. This idea was unacceptable to the orthodox, hence their insistence that Jesus had always been God and was entirely different from all created beings. Otherwise, it implied that the soul did not need the Church to achieve salvation.”
Kevin Williams writes that Jesus constantly taught the importance of good works of love to achieve spiritual growth. The idea that people achieve at-onement merely by giving verbal assent to Jesus, or by worshiping Jesus, or by merely believing in his name, or by believing in his work on the cross, is a gross distortion of his teachings. Having faith in Christ alone means nothing. Having the faith of Christ means to become like Jesus through living a life of love and good works toward everyone.”
According to Betty Eadie: “We can each experience a taste of His embrace by opening ourselves to His unconditional love and then by giving that love away to everyone we meet. The ripple effect, from its very source, is available to all who are willing to pass it along to others. Heaven can be anywhere.”
According to Edgar Cayce: “The promises of Jesus given in the Gospel of John can help you unlock your inner self.”
More information about Jesus and his mission can be found in many NDEs such as [1], [2], [3], [4], and [5].
9. Ten Reasons Why Jesus Accepted Death on the Cross
Central to mainstream Christian doctrine is the bizarre claim that God required a human sacrifice for sin. The gospels tell us Jesus believed the culmination of his divine mission was to die for the sake of others. In Jesus’ day, it was believed animal sacrifices were necessary for the forgiveness of sins. This made good sense to people two thousand years ago; but to the modern mind it is utterly ridiculous. The idea that God needs human or animal sacrifice to be appeased is repulsive and barbaric. It is also incredibly unjust for God to require the killing of an innocent person for the transgressions of the guilty. The Bible suggests there are much deeper spiritual reasons for Christ’s death and why Jesus ultimately volunteered to have himself killed. The following list describes some of these deeper spiritual reasons.
(1) Jesus’ death was a way to emphasize the major point of his teachings which is to practice unconditional love through self-sacrifice, self-deprecation, and self-denial by crucifying your lower “beastly” nature of humanity which is self-gratification, self-indulgence, self-centeredness, self-righteousness, self-importance, self-condemnation, selfishness, and humanity’s constant clamoring for SELF (i.e., the ego, the “false god”, the “devil“).
(2) Because of Jesus’ death, his teachings proliferated and drew worldwide attention. The incredible injustice of his execution, combined with his life-changing teachings, made Jesus one of the greatest spiritual teachers the world has ever known.
(3) Because of Jesus’ death, he demonstrated his testimony to be highly credible because of his willingness to die in such an extremely horrible execution for the sake of his testimony and teachings. A liar would not suffer this much and die for the sake of a lie. A lunatic would not say the profound things Jesus said. The only other option left is that Jesus was who he said he was and his teachings are therefore true.
(4) Because of Jesus’ death, he fulfilled a large number of Hebrew prophecies which drew a large number of Jews to his cause to build the foundation for his church.
(5) Because of his death, Jesus was able to return to heaven in order to continue his ministry on Earth at a later time. His return to Earth from heaven will satisfy prophecies demonstrating him to be the Hebrew Messiah. Should his return be a spiritual return instead of literal one, his return may represent a time when the Holy Spirit will rule the collective consciousness of humanity.
(6) Because of Jesus’ death, he was able to visit his disciples in spirit at a later time. Their testimony of Jesus’ ability to conquer death provided the world with strong evidence of life after death. His after-death visitations with his disciples are remarkably similar.
(7) Because of Jesus’ death, he was better able to serve humanity through the outpouring ministry of the Holy Spirit which Jesus manifested throughout his life. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit resulted in the spreading of his teachings throughout the world.
(8) One particular near-death experiencer, Arthur Yensen, said Jesus also came to stop the age-old practice of slaughtering innocent animals as scapegoats for human beings in the name of God. Killing animals for nourishment is one thing, but killing them for the purpose of removing the guilt of people’s misdeeds is abhorrent. Spiritually mature people pay their own debts and seek the forgiveness of those they offended. Having an innocent one killed to pay your debts is for the spiritually immature. Jesus himself said we must take up our own cross and follow him.
(9) According to Betty Eadie, life on Earth is our opportunity to learn unconditional love as Jesus taught it and to serve and sacrifice personal welfare in behalf of others. Part of Jesus’ mission was to demonstrate this … our mission is to live as he did.
(10) For all of the above reasons, it can be said that Jesus died for the benefit of the whole world as he so eloquently stated in the Gospel of John: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Who are the ones “whoever believes in him”? John explains in his first letter to the churches: “Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love … Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” (1 John 4:7-16).
I am sure there are other spiritual reasons for Jesus’ death. Unfortunately, for thousands of years the human sacrifice motif has been the dominate motif in Christianity concerning Christ’s self-sacrificial death.
10. Conclusion
NDEs involving Jesus reveal a consistent and profound truth: Jesus is not confined to religious dogma or distant history but is an active, loving presence that transcends time, space, and culture. Across countless testimonies, Jesus appears not merely as a symbol of Christian faith, but as the very embodiment of divine love, compassion, and understanding. Whether encountered as the radiant Being of Light, a personal guide, or a golden sphere of pure consciousness, his essence remains constant – unconditional love that knows each soul intimately.
These NDEs show that Jesus meets every person exactly where they are – in despair, confusion, faith, or doubt – and responds with love suited to their deepest need. He comforts the suffering, embraces the lonely, and uplifts those trapped in darkness. His message is always one of forgiveness, purpose, and transformation: that we are all children of God, called to live with love as our highest purpose.
For some, Jesus reveals the mysteries of reincarnation and spiritual evolution; for others, he offers glimpses of the future or lessons about the unity of all religions. Yet at the heart of every encounter is a single, radiant truth – that divine love is the ultimate reality. Jesus teaches that heaven is not merely a destination beyond death, but a living state of consciousness available here and now through acts of kindness, love, and forgiveness.
NDE testimonies collectively reaffirm that Jesus’ message was never meant to be exclusive but universal: that the light within him is the same light within all creation. Through these modern-day encounters, the Christ Consciousness continues to remind humanity that love is both the path and the destination – and that in the end, we all return to the same light that first gave us life.
