1. Introduction to Knowledge and the NDE
People having near-death experiences (NDEs) consistently portray the “light” as all-knowing (God), all-compassionate (love), and all-encompassing (life). NDErs often describe entering a realm in which knowledge is instantaneous, complete, and far beyond anything the human brain can contain. In this expanded state, questions are answered before they are fully formed. Life suddenly makes sense as a purposeful journey of the soul. The deepest truths about God, existence, and our own identity are “remembered” rather than learned. Yet when NDErs return, they do so with only fragments of that vast awareness – just enough to transform their priorities, values, and view of life.
NDEs reveal a universe in which knowledge is sacred, love is primary, and Earth life is a school for the soul. NDE testimonies and research describe a remarkable range of encounters with spiritual knowledge including the discovery that gaining wisdom and learning to love are the true purposes of life. They describe receiving wisdom from the light as overwhelming “downloads” of knowledge that arrive in telepathic streams, blocks, or bursts. They reveal access to something like cosmic “Akashic Records” where the story of every life – and all God’s creation – is stored. In the life review, this knowledge becomes deeply personal. NDErs relive their lives with total insight into their motives, experience the feelings of others, and receive the spiritual consequences of each choice.
At the same time, NDEs challenge purely materialistic views of mind and memory. Some NDErs bring back verifiable paranormal knowledge, complex scientific or mathematical insights, or new healing abilities they did not possess before. Others recall pre-birth awareness, soul planning, and encounters with councils of wise beings who help them understand their life mission. Many describe realms of light, temples of learning, heavenly libraries, and living fields of information – suggesting that consciousness may tap into a vast, nonlocal reservoir of knowledge that transcends the physical brain.
Yet a recurring lesson in these testimonies is that forgetting is part of the design. NDErs often report being told they cannot take all of this knowledge back with them, because Earth is meant to be lived from within limitation, not from the vantage point of total omniscience. The “veil” that hides our full spiritual memory is portrayed as a necessary condition for personal spiritual growth, free will, and genuine learning. What returns, instead, is a deep conviction: that we are more than our bodies, that love and knowledge are the only treasures we can take with us after death, and that every life is threaded with purpose in a universe far more intelligent and compassionate than we ever imagined.
The following article presents research findings, NDE testimonies, and emerging theories of consciousness to trace this overarching pattern. From the primacy of knowledge and love to the Light of total understanding, from downloads and life reviews to pre-existence, afterlife realms, and verified paranormal insight, they invite us to reconsider what it means to “know” and why we are here to learn.
2. The Primacy of Knowledge and Love
NDEs reveal a profound spiritual revelation that the true purpose of human life centers on the growth of knowledge and love. Across decades of research, NDE investigators and NDErs alike report that these two qualities – our understanding and our capacity to love – are what ultimately endure beyond physical life. Rather than emphasizing material success, status, or achievement, NDEs point toward an inner education of the soul. NDErs often return transformed, convinced that loving others more fully and seeking deeper, spiritual knowledge are the ultimate reasons we are here. The testimonies and insights that follow affirm a universal message: life is a “School” for becoming wiser and more loving, and every experience is an opportunity to grow in both ways.
NDE researcher Dr. Craig Lundahl reports that one of the important changes NDErs undergo is the understanding that gaining knowledge and love are the most important things in life.
NDE researcher Dr. Joel Ibrahim Kreps states that humans are on Earth to gain knowledge and learn about love: “A hypothesis that came to me after long reflection is based on the view of life as essentially a learning experience. This is a consistent conclusion from the NDE literature: We are here to gain knowledge and to learn about love (Ring & Valarino, 1998). The NDE is thus also a teaching, one specifically prescribed for each NDEr… [God] has sent NDEs to remind us humans why we are here and what our ultimate destination is. Several NDEs, such as those of Ritchie (1991) and Eadie (Eadie & Taylor, 1992), contained the specific message to inform people about the existence of God and his delegate Jesus.”
Barbara S. learned humans are on Earth to learn about love and gain knowledge: “The light then told me, ‘You are here to learn how to love and to gain knowledge.’ When I was told this, all the implications of the word love and knowledge were imparted to me. With the word ‘love‘, it wasn’t just about physical love but the love of nature, accepting all people as the same, everything that pertained to love. The same was with knowledge. It wasn’t just about book knowledge but about learning about different cultures, histories of the world. I felt when I was told this that it wasn’t just my reason for being on Earth but all of our reason for being here: mankind.”
Dr. Raymond Moody described the importance of seeking love and knowledge of the spiritual world: “Almost everyone has stressed the importance in this life of trying to cultivate love for others, a love of a unique and profound kind.” Dr. Moody adds that a second characteristic is a realization of the importance of seeking knowledge, of not confining one’s horizon to the material.
Kathryn H. learned that knowledge of humanity’s oneness is the most important knowledge of her NDE: “I felt an emotional sense of well-being and acceptance, a knowledge that we are all connected and not separate at all. I did not receive any other special knowledge, but this was the most important of all, anyway.”
Martin W. received the knowledge that love is important: “I received the knowledge that we must learn to love ourselves and others, give and receive such love, forgive ourselves and others, and be able to understand each other and come to agreement.”
David Goines learned that all human beings promised to return to God with the knowledge and experience gained in life: “We made a promise to God to accept the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of a physical life, to make the most of this opportunity for ourselves and God, to return to God with the knowledge and experience gained such that likewise, God could be enhanced by the experience. By doing good, improving our minds, and learning to cope with physical reality, our love for God will bring us back to Him.”
3. The Light of Knowledge
Encounters with the radiant Light during NDEs are often described as overwhelming revelations of absolute knowledge. NDErs consistently report that the Light communicates answers instantaneously – before questions are fully formed – and that its wisdom encompasses everything from the origins of the cosmos to the intimate details of one’s own life. Many describe this Light as a presence in which all truth is interconnected, where understanding unfolds effortlessly and comprehensively, as if the very fabric of reality were being revealed. Other NDErs describe the Light as containing the knowledge of all worlds, all beings, and all purposes, conveying that nothing in creation is random and that everything has meaning. Some encounter this Light as an orb of love and intelligence that knows them completely, while others interpret it as the cosmic embodiment of wisdom itself. The following testimonies illustrate how NDEs portray the Light as the ultimate source of knowledge – a universal, omniscient consciousness that both surrounds and permeates the soul.
Thomas Sawyer experienced the Light as having total knowledge: “The light emanated to me (without words): ‘Before you is the light. You have the opportunity to ask any series of questions. Any question that you can conceive of will be absolutely, unequivocally answered. If it’s a series of questions about something that you would require some kind of knowledgeable background to intelligently formulate your questions, you will instantly have that background.’ In other words, as I thought of and formulated a desire or a question, it would already have been recognized, acknowledged, and therefore answered. And the dialogue that took place, took place in no time. It didn’t require a fifteen-minute duration in time; it simply happened.”
Betty Eadie experienced the light of Jesus as total knowledge: “His (Jesus’) light now began to fill my mind, and my questions were answered even before I fully asked them. His light was knowledge. It had power to fill me with all truth. As I gained confidence and let the light flow into me, my questions came faster than I thought possible, and they were just as quickly answered. And the answers were absolute and complete… All in an instant. As I comprehended one thing, more questions and answers would come to me, all building on each other, and interacting as if all truth were intrinsically connected. The word “omniscient” had never been more meaningful to me. Knowledge permeated me. In a sense it became me, and I was amazed at my ability to comprehend the mysteries of the universe simply by reflecting on them.”
Dr. Dianne Morrissey learned that the Light contains total knowledge: “Within the Light was the cure for all diseases; within the Light was all the knowledge of every planet, every galaxy, every universe. Indeed, the Light was Wisdom and Love beyond all comprehension… Being one with the Light was like suddenly knowing every grain of sand on every planet, in every galaxy, in every universe, and at the same time knowing why God had put each grain of sand in its particular place. The Light held within it the knowledge of every book in every language, from the beginning of creation to the end of time. The Light knew why every author had put every word exactly where it was. The Light conveyed the message that each gain of sand, each plant, rock, animal, and human being has a purpose and that nothing ever dies because after death, there is a new life on the Other Side.”
Jayne Smith learned that the Light contains all knowledge: “The closer one gets to God, the closer one comes to all the light, love and knowledge in the universe.”
Howard Storm received from Jesus a tremendous sense of knowledge: “The luminous entity (Jesus) that embraced me knew me intimately and began to communicate a tremendous sense of knowledge. I knew that he knew everything about me and I was being unconditionally loved and accepted.”
Brad K. encountered an orb of love and knowledge: “There with this orb of glowing love and understanding. It didn’t seem foreign to me. It was not frightening, it was totally assuring, and there was no feeling of anything but my awe, and the love and knowledge and wisdom that this orb projected.”
During Sylvia Browne‘s NDE, she experienced infinite knowledge in the light: “The legendary white light appeared ahead of me, with sacred brilliance and infinite knowledge.”
According to the Dalai Lama, in Tibetan Buddhism the light is associated with wisdom and knowledge. The concept of light is one of the key images one experiences in an NDE. The Dalai Lama described the metaphor of light as: “a common image in all the major religious traditions. In the Buddhist context, light is particularly associated with wisdom and knowledge; darkness is associated with ignorance and a state of misknowledge.” (1999, p. 304)
4. The “Download” of Universal Knowledge
Many NDErs describe entering a state of awareness in which knowledge is no longer learned but received. Instead of unfolding through thought, language, or step-by-step reasoning, information arrives fully formed – instantaneous, complete, and often overwhelming in its scope. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as a “download,” is portrayed as a direct infusion of knowledge into the soul, bypassing the limitations of the physical brain. These downloads may include telepathic communication, panoramic understanding of one’s life, insight into universal laws, or even a sense of knowing “everything at once.” Whether experienced as a gentle transmission, a sudden rush, or a vast merging with cosmic truth, the effect is the same: comprehension that is effortless, rapid, and carried with perfect clarity. The testimonies that follow reveal how NDErs describe receiving knowledge not through hearing or thinking, but through an immediate, inner absorption – an encounter with universal knowledge that feels remembered rather than learned, and transformative in effect. Most NDErs say the knowledge was too expansive to bring back fully. After returning to their bodies, they can only remember fragments – like a dream that slips away, but with life-changing aftereffects.
a. Telepathic Downloading
NDErs often describe having a pure, instantaneous transfer of knowledge that transcends language, sound, and even thought as we know it. Instead of hearing messages or forming ideas step by step, many NDErs report receiving vast amounts of knowledge in a single moment, as if wisdom itself were infused directly into their being. This phenomenon is frequently described as a telepathic download that bypasses the physical brain and is absorbed by the soul and into the subconscious mind. These downloads can include personal insights, profound truths about existence, memories of past or future events, or knowledge of cosmic principles far beyond previous understanding. In this expanded NDE state, learning requires no effort, communication flows without words, and comprehension is revealed with complete clarity. The following testimonies illustrate this remarkable aspect of the NDE – the direct infusion of universal knowledge into the soul.
Bruce Budden downloaded knowledge into his spirit and not his physical memory: “I was having a conversation with this spirit in a telepathic sense. I can’t recall the conversation because in the spiritual form, the type of downloading of knowledge and insight I received is like a energetic strengthening of my spirit. It’s difficult to explain this but I hope you can understand. My spirit is the one that received the knowledge and insight, not my physical brain. The knowledge is stored in my spirit, not in my physical memory.”
Tasha L. downloaded knowledge through telepathy: “I experienced a form of telepathic communication that filled me with reassurance and peace. Although I didn’t physically hear any words, it felt as if I was downloading their communication directly into my being.”
Seth Cowan received an instant telepathic download of information: “I then had like a whoosh of sudden information like an instant download of information. The information was about all my loved ones and so much more that I can’t remember it all… All the information and communication we had was telepathic and instantaneous.”
Annie P. downloaded and absorbed information without effort: “I wound up in a room where I remember studying a system of quantum physics and geometric shapes which would allow us to evolve an ability to quickly attract, and be filled with, only one energy – that of Light… Sitting in the [heavenly] classroom, I felt no strain in retaining new information. It was as if all the information was ‘downloaded’ into me without effort. Another way I learned was by leaning over a book while ‘absorbing’ the information in it.”
Jeff F. experienced a download of information without words: “I felt unconditional, healing love from these Beings. I sensed a Christlike presence as well. I vaguely became aware of time and realized that I had died and previously lived a physical life. No words were exchanged, only feelings and a ‘download’ of information.”
Travis S. felt telepathic information was downloaded without words: “I was able to comprehend conversations without words and I was able to comprehend feeling, past actions, and care almost as if the information had been downloaded to me.”
Heather V. downloaded information through telepathy: “Then I began getting an information download. There was no talking, just information going into me with absolute love. It was very clear, very loud, and very certain, that we are all very important to God.”
Riley H. downloaded knowledge with spiritual understanding: “I started receiving knowledge – things I had never studied, truths I never asked for (and some I did). So much wisdom was downloaded into me as the veil was lifting… In that realm, I didn’t just gain insight, it was as if I was downloaded with layers of spiritual understanding.”
Howard Storm received visions of the future including a time when humans will receive all knowledge through prayer: “People, in this best of all worlds, weren’t interested in knowledge; they were interested in wisdom. This was because they were in a position where anything they needed to know, in the knowledge category, they could receive simply through prayer. Everything, to them, was solvable. They could do anything they wanted to do.”
b. Downloading Universal Knowledge
Many NDErs describe downloading an overwhelming amount of knowledge that transcends anything available through ordinary human learning. This phenomenon is often portrayed as an instantaneous download in which answers to profound questions about life, the universe, and existence are received in a single, transformative event. Rather than learning step-by-step, NDErs report a sudden merging with knowledge itself – an immersion into a limitless field of understanding where nothing is hidden and every question is met with an immediate, complete response. These testimonies describe the reception of insight arriving faster than thought and expanding consciousness beyond physical limits. The following testimonies illustrate the extraordinary breadth and intensity of these downloads, where NDErs momentarily become knowers, and the boundaries of human comprehension give way while in the all-encompassing Light.
Rachel F. downloaded everything there is to know: “I knew I had become One with all of existence because at the time I knew everything there was to know. I think in a way, it may have been somewhat similar to a ‘download’.. I don’t remember specifically how that happened, but my understanding of my life and our planet and existence greatly and rapidly changed. It felt more like a ‘merging’, like a re-connecting, a re-becoming. It seemed the answer to all of creation was so simple, almost as if, if I could have, I would have kicked myself at forgetting it.”
Tonja BB downloaded the answers to everything: “[I experienced] more consciousness and alertness than normal knowledge was given. I guess that is why I felt more alert. It was like a flash drive with my entire life and family was plugged into me and downloaded. The knowledge I gained was answers to everything. So in that sense I was enlightened… It all came downloading in to me and it all made sense. Like the puzzle pieces all fit.”
Carol V. downloaded knowledge beyond human comprehension: “I was shown (it was downloaded into me) knowledge beyond our human comprehension and also given a special assignment to carry out here on Earth.”
Kyah received a download about everything in the universe: “[I understood] everything about the universe The download was so intense and I was so mad when I returned. I had to process this download in bits but I eventually got the full message.”
Elle D. downloaded all the answers to everything: “The experience at the end, in the clear light, was an enlightenment, whereby, I understood everything about reality, the universe, life, as if all of the answers were downloaded so I experienced completeness.”
Brent S. downloaded instant knowledge on every subject like the Internet: “Understanding of almost every event in my life up to that point came flooding into me. It was like being connected to the internet of God where knowledge on every subject became instantaneously available. It was also like having an expanded processor that could process information on hundreds of different tangents in parallel. The information downloaded, was understood, and then all the tangential questions on each line of new information were immediately answered in the same fashion all in parallel in a single moment in time.”
Maria P. downloaded all knowledge: “I felt like I was injected with all there is of Knowing. As if, all knowledge was downloaded to me.”
Carmie S. downloaded all the answers to life: “All of a sudden, I was pulled up and out of the darkness and into another realm where I felt like a super, high-speed computer being downloaded with all of the answers to life, including the ability to understand complex mathematics. It was as if I had a filter blocking me from the realm where all knowledge exists, and that filter had been removed.”
Michael M. downloaded a burst of universal truths: “I was hit with a burst of information and understandings. It felt like I just finished downloading the most amazing universal truths and my purpose.”
Edward C. had a download of information leading to total knowledge: “I also had a download of information so there was nothing for me to ask the Light/GOD because I was all-knowing.”
Martin J. received an endless download of knowledge: “[I understood] everything about the universe. It was as if I was a computer and was receiving an endless download of knowledge. I asked questions and received answers immediately. It was at the same time without delay. Anytime I posed a question, the answer was presented.”
Joseph S. understood everything about life from download: “Everything about the universe and why we are here was downloaded or imprinted upon me. I understood everything about life.”
Kathy VB downloaded all the answers to everything: “It was as if I was aware of everything and knew everything, like a download of all the answers.”
Robert RB downloaded everything about the universe: “[I understood] everything about the universe. The information was slowly coming to me, like a download. I hadn’t learned everything but was slowly becoming aware of things I had always had questions about in life. The universe was slowly opening up to me.”
c. Instantaneous Download
In many NDEs, knowledge does not through ordinary thought – it appears in a single, explosive moment of understanding. NDErs often describe this as an instantaneous download, a sudden infusion of knowledge that bypasses the senses and overwhelms the mind. Answers to lifelong questions, and even vast truths about existence are received not through dialogue, but all at once – as if an entire library of information is placed directly into awareness in a fraction of a second. These moments feel more like remembering something deeply familiar, as though the soul is briefly reconnected to a reservoir of knowledge that far exceeds earthly comprehension. The following testimonies reveal how profoundly and completely this instantaneous download of knowledge can transform those who experience it.
Sandi T. instantly downloaded answers to questions allowed having on Earth: “I did a LOT of fighting against what I was told, taught, or had downloaded during these NDEs… I received the download that answered my questions of ‘why’ as far as I am allowed to have those answers while here on Earth… NDErs often use the very accurate word of ‘a download’ because you are given information that is not there one second, and is there completely in the next instant. Full information that would take years to write out into a library of books, there in an instant in its entirety.”
Bryan D. instantly downloaded answers from the Being of Light: “Things that I thought I had learned, I was corrected on. Paragraphs of questions emanated from me, and as fast as I could ask, I was being answered or even downloaded the answers. I’m pretty sure that this was the whole ‘life flashing before your eyes’ moment that others have spoken of during these occasions.”
Brian T. instantly downloaded knowledge about his life: “I could see every part of my life, every event and incident all at once. Although it seemed instantaneous, I knew that every moment was there. These days, I might say that I downloaded my whole hard drive.”
Seth Cowan experienced an instant download of information: “I then had like a whoosh of sudden information like an instant download of information. The information was about all my loved ones and so much more that I can’t remember it all… It was an instant download of all information at once. It felt like I already knew the information but was finally able to access it again.”
Fred R. downloaded knowledge all at once: “Moving through space, he (Being of Light) explained everything to me and wanted to show me everything he had ever created. He was downloading information to me regarding how it was made, how much time it took etc. This was all at an incredible pace that it was hard to quantify… There was so much information it was hard to download and describe, yet I knew everything all at once.”
Stephanie A. felt like she downloaded a year’s worth of information in seconds: “It might have been 37 seconds, but I felt like I downloaded a year’s worth of information in that time.”
5. Receiving Instant Knowledge In “Blocks” or “Chunks”
Many NDErs describe receiving knowledge in concentrated “blocks,” “chunks,” or “packets” that appear fully formed in a single instant. These transmissions are not processed like ordinary thoughts; they are absorbed as complete understandings, containing layers of meaning that unfold effortlessly within the mind. Some NDErs describe this as remembering something ancient and familiar, others as downloading vast stores of knowledge that were always available but dormant. Whether experienced as holographic bursts, fields of insight, or blossoms of knowing, this mode of learning transcends the limits of linear thought. In this expanded state, consciousness seems to widen to accommodate entire structures of understanding – cosmic truths, personal insights, answers to existential questions – delivered all at once with overwhelming clarity. The following NDE testimonies illustrate how, in the presence of transcendent light or higher intelligence, knowledge is not taught but transferred – not built piece by piece, but received whole.
Virginia Rivers received knowledge as whole idea blocks: “The farther forward a person is propelled through the tunnel, the more knowledge can be received. The mind can feel like a sponge, growing and expanding in size with each addition. This knowledge may come in single words and in whole idea blocks. Everything can be understood as it is being soaked up or absorbed. The mind expands and absorbs as each new piece of information comes in. It is receiving knowledge that was already known but forgotten or mislaid, as if it were waiting to be picked up on the way by.”
Jayne Smith described receiving “blocks of knowledge” while expanding in God’s light: “My consciousness began to expand with the bliss of it all. Suddenly there came into my field of consciousness an entire field of knowledge. It was like a whole block of knowledge that just simply came in and settled itself on me. I knew, what takes several sentences to tell, but it didn’t come in several sentences – it came all in one piece. What I knew was that I was immortal, that I was eternal, that I was indestructible, that I always had been, that I always will be, and that there was no way in this world I could ever be lost… When that block of knowledge was digested by me, as it were, another block of knowledge came in.”
NDE researcher Michael Talbot described how NDErs receive instantaneous knowledge in holographic “chunks”: “According to several NDE researchers, including Moody, even many NDErs themselves use the term ‘holographic’ when describing the experience… The second thing the beings emphasize is knowledge. Frequently NDEers comment that the beings seemed pleased whenever an incident involving knowledge or learning flickered by during their life review. Some are openly counseled to embark on a quest for knowledge after they return to their physical bodies, especially knowledge related to self-growth or that enhances one’s ability to help other people. Others are prodded with statements such as ‘learning is a continuous process and goes on even after death‘ and ‘knowledge is one of the few things you will be able to take with you after you have died. The preeminence of knowledge in the afterlife dimension is apparent in another way. Some NDEers discovered that in the presence of the light they suddenly had direct access to all knowledge.
“Some NDEers report that they didn’t even have to ask questions in order to access this infinite library of information. Following their life review they just suddenly knew everything, all the knowledge there was to know from the beginning of time to the end. Others came into contact with this knowledge after the Being of Light made some specific gesture, such as wave its hand. Still others said that instead of acquiring the knowledge, they remembered it, but forgot most of what they recalled as soon as they returned to their physical bodies (an amnesia that seems to be universal among NDErs who are privy to such visions).
“In addition to being holographic in all the ways already mentioned, this vision of total knowledge has another holographic characteristic. NDEers often say that during the vision the information arrives in ‘chunks’ that register instantaneously in one’s thoughts. In other word, rather than being strung out in a linear fashion like words in a sentence or scenes in a movie, all the facts, details, images, and pieces of information burst as ‘bundles of thought.’ The late OBE researcher Robert Monroe, who has also experienced such instantaneous explosions of information while in the OB state, calls them ‘thought balls.'”
Amy Call downloaded holographic information of everything: “I saw something like holographic words and numbers move in front of me past the stars. It felt like I was being downloaded with information. It was more about receiving information, than visuals and literal details that I can put into clear words. I felt at that time that I understood EVERYTHING.”
Thomas Sawyer became total knowledge within the Light like a machine gun blasting his being with “packets” of knowledge: “There’s no language to explain what happened in the light. It was divine power. What I’m sure of is that, as that was facilitated, I became total knowledge. That was so extraordinary. Having had that experience for just a split-second out of time certainly has been very humbling for me. I cannot ever comfortably say that I even became like God. God is total knowledge. What does total knowledge mean? It’s divine power. I’m not total knowledge now. There have been a few little fancy phrases and helpful hints and so on that have leaked out of my subconscious or super-conscious that certainly did come from that total thing called knowledge. The memory of where I was and what condition I was in comes as little bombardments or packets of total knowledge that can be described by many analogies, such as a machine gun, with each bullet being a packet of knowledge just blasted into my being.”
Dannion Brinkley became total knowledge from the Beings of Light: “More certain than ever, he knew this was a school – a place of profound, experiential learning. There were no books, no rote memorization.” In the presence of these Beings, Brinkley didn’t just learn; he became knowledge itself. He could ask any question and instantly understand the answer. It was like being a droplet immersed in the ocean of universal wisdom, or a beam of light absorbing the knowledge of all light.”
Kimberly Clark-Sharp received nonverbal knowledge about the answers to the eternal questions of life: “The light gave me knowledge, though I heard no words. We did not communicate in English or in any other language. This was discourse clearer and easier than the clumsy medium of language. It was something like understanding math or music – nonverbal knowledge, but knowledge no less profound. I was learning the answers to the eternal questions of life – questions so old we laugh them off as clichés. ‘Why are we here?’ To learn. ‘What’s the purpose of our life?’ To love. I felt as if I was re-remembering things I had once known but somehow forgotten, and it seemed incredible that I had not figured out these things before now.”
RaNelle Wallace was overwhelmed from receiving “floodgates” of knowledge: “Floodgates of knowledge opened, and truth poured into me without end or constraint. Its source was the light and truth all around me, and it was clarified, or explained at my level, by my grandmother. She gave me knowledge about God, life, the creation of the world, and even the reaches of eternity. The truths were comprehensive and complete and rushed upon me in such enormous volume that I thought my head would explode. It was coming too fast. I wanted to be able to absorb it, to remember it all, but it was too much.”
Beverly Brodsky received information from the Being of Light that was like an instant blossoming of an infinite number of flowers: “In time the questions ceased, because I suddenly was filled with all the Being’s wisdom. I was given more than just the answers to my questions; all knowledge unfolded to me, like the instant blossoming of an infinite number of flowers all at once. I was filled with God’s knowledge, and in that precious aspect of his Beingness, I was one with him… Now I was filled with not just all knowledge, but also with all love. It was as if the light were poured in and through me.”
Jan Price received information like her mind opening like the petals of a flower: “I felt my mind open like the petals of a flower. Then softly and tenderly came the knowingness, the connection with all that is… Here, in this celestial silence, all was perfectly clear, understood. Here was fulfillment. All knowledge was mine, and I could draw it into conscious awareness as needed. On all levels we can tap into Universal Mind, but it’s easier here because of the more subtle energies.”
Wayne H. experienced an instant sharing of knowledge: “I sensed a presence behind me and then had a communication. This was beyond telepathy. This was not hearing words in my mind and translating them into thoughts, this was knowing as the other presence knew, an instant sharing of knowledge.”
Jayne Smith became like a “receiving station” of knowledge in the light: “I became more blissful, more rapturous, more ecstatic. I was just filling and filling with this light and love that was in the light. The dynamics of this light are not static at all. They are so dynamic and so much going on in there of love and joy and knowledge. As you take it into yourself, or as it goes into you and you receive it, your ecstasy level just becomes tremendous. I knew that I had lost all sense of having a body. It was just my consciousness, sort of pure and free floating, and I did not think at all during this part of the experience. I had no thoughts. I was a receiving station. I merely felt and absorbed and took in and did not think at all. I reached the point in the rapture of it all where I thought to myself suddenly, the first thought. ‘I wonder how much more of this I can stand before I shatter?’ With that thought, the light began to recede. So, the universe will not let us shatter. We cannot take in more of this bliss and joy than we are able to handle at a time.”
NDE researcher Arvin Gibson described NDErs receiving complete knowledge: “One of the most fascinating aspects of some NDEs is the descriptions of those who said they had almost total knowledge of the universe… Upon return and recovery from their near-death state most of them forgot much of what they knew in this other world; they remembered only that they had a remarkable experience of complete knowledge. In Kenneth Ring’s study of blind people who had NDEs he also found individuals who expressed complete knowledge of many things… A brief sampling of the comments of some of those who said they had extraordinary knowledge follows: ‘I was also aware of pure knowledge. Things went quickly through my mind. I could understand many things’ (Nelson, 1989, p. 118). ‘About this time I had an experience that I’ll never forget… a feeling of total, total knowledge without asking… This feeling I had of total knowledge was just that, I knew everything without asking. It was an incredible feeling’ (Gibson, 1992, p. 218).
Kerry Kirk described how she received all knowledge: “I began receiving ‘all knowledge,’ or at least that is what it felt like. They were there teaching me. This didn’t come to me as words like you and I speak. More as complete thoughts. When I think, it is generally in words and pictures, this is how I received the information. As complete words and pictures in my mind. As I could form a question in my mind I had the answer. Not just the answer to that question, but the why and how and the answer to every other question that the answer would bring up.”
Tiffany Snow received knowledge like an empty library suddenly being filled: “Then he (Being of Light) gave me answers to thousands of questions that I never had questions for! Reams of information seemed to be exploding in my brain, like an empty library suddenly being realized! Details flooded my being about many wonderful and sacred things. I wondered: were these things newly learned, or just remembered?”
Ned Dougherty absorbed universal knowledge from the light: “God began to imbue me with universal knowledge. I realized that I had always thirsted for this knowledge and I wanted to absorb as much as I could. As I remained suspended in God’s light, I felt this knowledge penetrate and absorbed by my spiritual being. This knowledge was flowing through me in the same manner as God’s love, pulsating through my being.”
Mellen-Thomas Benedict experienced consciousness expansion while receiving more knowledge: “At faster than light speed, I flew through the center of the galaxy, absorbing more knowledge as I went… At first I thought I was going somewhere; actually traveling. But then I realized that, as the stream was expanding, my own consciousness was also expanding to take in everything in the Universe!”
Roger F. experienced consciousness expansion like downloading from a computer: “[My] sense of expanded consciousness was immediate. Full expansion and understanding followed within an eternal instant… Upon my return, my consciousness was no longer expanded boundlessly. It was as though a small desktop computer (me) had downloaded the entire contents of a super computer.”
Michael M. downloaded a burst of information: “I was hit with a burst of information and understandings. It felt like I just finished downloading the most amazing universal truths and my purpose.”
Sam K. downloaded knowledge like a semester of school: “When I was in the light, it felt like graduating from a semester, getting a download there, and then coming back.”
6. The Akashic Records of Knowledge
Many NDErs describe entering a realm where knowledge is a living field of information that transcends personal memory and physical brain function. This domain is often likened to a universal archive or cosmic repository, a place where the foundations of consciousness, history, and existence itself seem to be stored in forms far more dynamic than written records. Modern theories in consciousness research have proposed that such an informational field may underlie the structure of the universe, serving as both the source and the storage of all that has ever been known, created, or experienced. Remarkably, these scientific speculations echo what many NDErs report: a direct encounter with a multidimensional “library” or “Akashic Records” where answers arise instantly, questions form telepathically, and understanding pours into the soul as if drawn from an infinite well. The following testimonies explore this profound intersection between theoretical physics, mystical insight, and NDE testimonies – each pointing toward the existence of a vast, interconnected reservoir of knowledge that supports, surrounds, and remembers all of life.
Dr. Ervin Laszlo, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize, is an integral theorist and champion of this zero-point field as instrumental when understanding consciousness and the universe. Laszlo is generally recognized as the founder of systems philosophy who emphasizes the importance of establishing a holistic perspective on the world and humanity through quantum consciousness. Lazlo’s groundbreaking book, “Science and the Akashic Field: An Integral Theory of Everything” makes a compelling case for the zero-point field to be the substance of the entire universe. It can theoretically be viewed as the source of all consciousness and matter in the universe. Using the Hindu concept of a “cosmic memory” called the “Akasha,” Laszlo theorizes the zero-point field to be the fundamental energy and information-carrying field of the universe, past and present, including all possible parallel universes. Laszlo describes how such an informational field explains why the universe appears to be fine-tuned as to form conscious life forms. Laszlo’s zero-point Akashic Field Theory solves several problems in quantum physics from nonlocality to quantum entanglement.
Dr. Ervin Laszlo’s theory of the Akashic Records agrees with revelations from the Christian mystic and NDEr Edgar Cayce. When Cayce was asked where he received his psychic information, he answered it was from “the intelligent infinity” as it is “brought into intelligent energy” as a gateway to view the present. Cayce acknowledged this “gateway” to be equivalent to the Hindu concept of the “Akashic Records” and the Christian concept of the “Book of Life.” Cayce revealed these otherworldly records are stored in a heavenly “Hall of Records” which corresponds to the so-called “Temple of Knowledge” or the “Temple of Wisdom” appearing in many NDE testimonials.
Edgar Cayce was able to access the Akashic Records during his out-of-body journeys to heaven. He described it as a a vast, timeless repository of every soul’s experiences, thoughts, emotions, and potentials. Cayce mentioned that the Akashic Records contain the complete history and destiny of humanity. From this source, Cayce reportedly retrieved detailed information about past lives, spiritual lessons, health remedies, and future probabilities. Cayce emphasized that the Records are shaped by each individual’s choices and intentions, and that accessing them was not merely reading history but perceiving the deeper spiritual patterns of a soul’s journey across lifetimes. His readings remain some of the most widely cited modern accounts of the Akashic Records in action.
Numerous other NDErs describe arriving at this heavenly “library” that is a living field of the mind. Some find open, wall-less archives reached at the speed of thought; others enter coliseum-sized halls, gold-bound records, or a crystalline “Book of Life.” Spirit guides and loved ones appear; questions form and answers are revealed – history, cosmology, personal understanding – downloaded as pure knowing rather than reading line by line. Whether called a repository, a multidimensional composition, or a library of truth, the message is consistent: all knowledge exists there, intimately available, and filled with love.
Marie W. accessed the Akashic Records during her NDE: “Metatron (an angel) had me put my hands on a ‘sacred text’ as he called it. I felt the book… The pages were made of light and edged in gold… Metatron pointed out some very important passages and entries that were about me. Then he told me it was referred to as the ‘Akashic Records’.”
Sharon D. became aware of the Akashic Records during her NDE: “I was aware of some kind of identity, yet no body, nothing that kept any thought I had as separate or isolated, I guess what you would call being aware of the Akashic Record and your life’s thoughts within it and everyone else’s that ever was.”
Bryan D. accessed the Akashic Records during his NDE: “Almost anything that I asked was being answered, ‘Is this the Akashic Records?’ the thought crossed my mind. I remember flashes of being side by side at a ‘desk’ with other spirit bodies that were also students. I remember being shown books, and I remember halls, with long file cabinets full of history, and subjects beyond comprehension.”
El S. accessed the Akashic Records during her NDE: “On the other side, I was taken through the Akashic Records. Prior questions I had before this experience were answered as my guides showed me things of the world and my life… My guides took me through different dimensions within the Akashic Record of time and events. I saw alternative timeline events of this reality and was shown future events of my life and world events.”
Michael L. accessed the Akashic Records during his NDE: “I had a glimpse of what I learned later that many people call the Akashic Record, or a glimpse of the Universal Consciousness.”
Ruth describes the Akashic Records: “There is such a profound structure to the Universe that cannot be described. I look upon it as Cayce did the Akashic records, but in my view, it is a giant gigabyte mainframe that can do trillions of bytes per second. It is like a well run machine that is totally fair and well ordered.”
Leea W. experienced the Akashic “Field” during her NDE: “I experienced myself as being a part of a living field, the Akashic Field, the Higgs Field, the Unified Field, Ether and etc. I further experienced everything as living sentients and being humans as holographic fractals of Supreme Source.”
Marie W. instantly downloaded knowledge from “universal grid systems”: “I was traveling through planetary systems and solar systems, and things called universal grid systems. Just as I would encounter each thing, I was instantly downloaded with the knowledge of its meaning and use. The place I had the most questions about was a place called ‘The Universal Healing Center.’ It is a grid system. They let me experience it. A part of the process of ascension involves our earthly lives being downloaded into the matrix of creation. The Universal Healing Grid system and the Matrix of Creation are two different things.”
Natalie Sudman downloaded knowledge in the form of a complex matrix: “I presented what seems from my current physical body/conscious mind perception to be a transfer of information in the form of an inexplicably complex matrix… It included events, thoughts, incidents, individuals, and groups in all their relationship complexities: stories, concepts, connections, nuances, layers, judgments, and projections… Rather than being a classic ‘life flashing before the eyes’ scene, this download was a collection that emphasized what might be very broadly understood as cultural and political information.”
Jeff H. downloaded waves of energy as knowledge: “The first energy download taught me why I was put through so many hardships since birth. It wasn’t by accident or by fate or by bad luck. They were all pre-planned. To make me stronger and wiser. All the pain I’ve been carrying around all these years was erased. It felt like I was reborn again. Then more waves of energy and answers came into me.”
7. The Life Review of Knowledge
The life review described in NDEs is often portrayed as an encounter with pure, instantaneous knowledge – a moment in which all events, choices, emotions, and consequences from one’s earthly existence unfold with absolute clarity. Rather than a judgment imposed from outside, this process is frequently characterized as an immersion into total knowledge, where NDErs see their lives from every angle at once: their own perspective, the perspectives of others, and the deeper motivations that shaped each action. Information arrives in flashes, streams, or vast downloads of insight that reveal the intricate web of cause and effect linking every thought, word, and deed. Many NDErs describe this experience as reliving their entire life in a state of expanded awareness, where comprehension is immediate, complete, and infused with profound love. The following NDE testimonies illustrate this remarkable dimension of the life review – an overwhelming encounter with the truth of one’s existence, revealed through a flood of knowledge beyond anything the human mind can contain.
Thomas Sawyer learned the life review involves total knowledge: “As this (life review) takes place, you have total knowledge. You have the ability to be a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a psychoanalyst, and much more. You are your own spiritual teacher, maybe for the first and only time in your life. You are simultaneously the student and the teacher in a relationship.”
RaNelle Wallace had a life review involving total knowledge about herself: “A brief scene flashed before me. A series of pictures, words, ideas, understanding. It was a scene from my life. It flashed before me with incredible rapidity, and I understood it completely and learned from it. Another scene came, and another, and another, and I was seeing my entire life, every second of it. And I didn’t just understand the events; I relived them. I was that person again, doing those things to my mother, or saying those words to my father or brothers or sisters, and I knew why, for the first time, I had done them or said them. Entirety does not describe the fullness of this review. It included knowledge about myself, that all the books in the world couldn’t contain. I understood every reason for everything I did in my life. And I also understood the impact I had on others… It was instant and total knowing.”
Barbara Harris-Whitfield had a life review where she received information flowing at breakneck speed: “All of this (life review) translated into knowledge, and I learned – oh, how I learned! The information was flowing at an incredible breakneck speed that probably would have burned me up if it weren’t for the extraordinary energy holding me. The information came in, and then love neutralized my judgments against myself. In other words, as I relived my life, God never judged me. God held me and kept me together. I received all information about every scene – my perceptions and feelings – and anyone else’s perceptions and feelings who were in the scene… God interjected love into everything, every feeling, every bit of information about absolutely everything that went on, so that everything was all right.”
Darren R. had a life review like a massive download of memories: “My past flashed before me, out of my control. I experienced all my actual past life events simultaneously and rapidly; like a massive download/flood of memories, but from the point of view of how my actions impacted the other person.”
Leonard R. had a life review like downloading information: “This is where what I now know to be a life review started. I saw a picture of myself, but at least a few years older. Then another picture and then another until eventually I had images or videos passing by me so fast that it felt uncomfortable. It’s almost as if I was downloading the images or videos as I watched them.”
Phil R. had a life review of downloading ultimate knowledge of his life: “It felt as if ultimate knowledge and love (the universe/God) was appraising my life experience and downloading it back to me in rapid fire.”
Kevin L. downloaded everything he experienced in life all at once in the tunnel: “Everything I had ever experienced was all there [in the tunnel], and it had all been downloaded and absorbed… Then I seem to get a download of information all at once that feels like information is swirling all around me.”
Gillian M. instantly downloaded her earthly experiences: “I have a vague recollection of having my earthly experiences ‘downloaded’, and having a great reunion with these beings, with a great period of relaxation/recuperation. Communication was non-verbal and instantaneous.”
8. Paranormal Knowledge Verified
NDEs often challenge the boundaries of what is traditionally considered subjective. While skeptics frequently attribute NDEs to hallucinations or neurochemical processes, a growing body of evidence suggests that some NDEs contain verifiable components that point beyond ordinary brain-based explanations. Reports of accurate information obtained under medically unconscious conditions, detailed perceptions by NDErs blind since birth, and encounters with deceased persons not yet known to have died all raise important questions about the nature and source of consciousness. In addition, certain NDErs return with complex scientific insights, mathematical structures, or healing abilities far beyond their previous knowledge or training – remarkable aftereffects that resist easy dismissal. Together, this phenomena forms a compelling case that NDEs may involve access to information unavailable through normal sensory means. The following testimonies explore this intriguing dimension of NDE research: the acquisition of paranormal knowledge that is later verified, corroborated, or manifested through measurable outcomes in the physical world.
Philosopher Carl Becker (1984) listed four ways in which NDEs may be considered an objective experience: (1) Paranormal knowledge that is later verified; (2) The similarity of deathbed visons in different cultures; (3) differences between religious expectations and visionary experiences; and (4) Third-party observations of visionary figures, indicating that they were not merely subjective hallucinations.
Dr. Bruce Greyson describes how some NDErs receive paranormal knowledge of a deceased person not known to have died: “People having NDEs, or who are on their deathbeds, see and often express surprise at meeting a recently deceased person of whose death neither they nor anyone around them had any knowledge. This phenomenon excludes the possibility that the meeting of the deceased person was a hallucination related to the experiencer’s expectations.”
Dr. Kenneth Ring‘s findings revealed that blind persons, including those blind from birth, do report classic NDEs of the kind common to sighted persons; that the great preponderance of blind persons claim to see during NDEs and OBEs; and that occasionally claims of visually-based knowledge that could not have been obtained by normal means can be independently corroborated.
In the midst of her rapture with the light, Vicki Umipeg (who was born blind) was suddenly overcome with a sense of total knowledge: “I had a feeling like I knew everything … and like everything made sense. I just knew that this was where… this place was where I would find the answers to all the questions about life, and about the planets, and about God, and about everything… It’s like the place was the knowing.” And then Vicki was flooded with information of a religious nature as well as scientific and mathematical knowledge. She came to understand languages she didn’t know. All this overwhelmed and astonished her: “I don’t know beans about math and science… all of a sudden understood intuitively almost things about calculus, and about the way planets were made. And I don’t know anything about that… I felt there was nothing I didn’t know.”
NDEs often include an encounter with a heavenly “light.” However, no NDEr other than Lynnclaire Dennis (www.mereon.org) has ever brought back a detailed scientific description of the light’s complex geometric structure and movement. In her 1997 book entitled “The Pattern,” Lynnclaire first described in detail her amazing NDE and description of this light. Lynnclaire courageously refused to give this pattern of light the ambiguous label of “God“. She prefers to simply call it “The Pattern” and she describes it as an all-connecting pattern of light – a three-dimensional mandala representative of time and space, and the energy generating matter. Because she experienced The Pattern as pure love, she has always maintained it to be the reason why love is all that matters. In simple terms, The Pattern is a knot; but not just any knot. The Pattern is the simplest knot (a Trefoil Knot) and yet most profound knot – a never-before-discovered trefoil knot. The Pattern became of great interest to mathematicians, physicists, astrobiologists, and molecular geneticists who developed from it the “Mereon Matrix” – an algorithm representing the unification of knowledge which relies on whole systems both living and life-like. It is a scientific framework charting the sequential, emergent growth process of systems. Read more about this in the article entitled The Science of Life Discovered From Lynnclaire Dennis’ NDE.
A European astrophysicist by the name of Metod Saniga used NDE research to develop a mathematical model of time which seems to offer solutions to problems vexing scholars since Einstein. In brief, Dr. Saniga takes seriously the testimony of NDErs when they describe experiences in a realm where “time stops” and where some of them “see the past, present, and future all at once.” Dr. Saniga describes this realm as “the Pure Present.” Dr. Saniga used these anomalous experiences to describe a single mathematical model which can account for both the conventional and the extraordinary ways humans experience time.
NDE researcher Dr. Melvin Morse described an NDEr who developed over 100 patents in molecular chemistry based on the information he received from his NDE: “I recently discussed these issues with theoretical physicists at the National Institute of Discovery Science. This is a consciousness think tank of national renown scholars in their individual fields. They explained to me that science states that reality is made of tiny nuclear particles, so tiny that it is unclear if they are actually matter or simply patterns of energy. All of the fundamental particles in this universe have at least two counterparts which have been documented as being “real.” These particles last for only a fraction of a second in this reality, yet they comprise the elemental building blocks of reality. In theory, there are at least three possible universes comprised of the three basic sets of subatomic particles.
NDE researcher Dr. Jeffrey Long described how NDEs provide important spiritual knowledge. “Another concern of NDE skeptics is that experiencers do not return with information or ideas with immediate widespread use, such as a cure for cancer or verifiable new scientific understandings. There have been anecdotal reports suggesting the contrary, but in my experience, experiencers generally do not return with such information. Failure to receive a specific hoped for gift is not a valid criticism of NDEs. The gift experiencers do return with is generally varied and spiritual in nature, often including the concept of love and a lack of fear of death. The gift to experiencers of better understanding love and their purpose on Earth is a very important gift, suggesting these understandings are among the most important things we can accomplish. NDE studies provide a tantalizing glimpse of what this other reality is, and provides some clues to humankind’s deepest questions of who we really are and our relationship with a greater reality. It is entirely reasonable to accept the NDE in the way the experiencers themselves almost uniformly perceive the experience: an encounter with another dimension of reality.”
Some NDErs have been able to successfully diagnose and heal people due to the aftereffects attributed to their NDEs. One example of this is documented in Tom Harpur‘s documentary, Life After Death. Harpur interviewed a doctor whose name is Dr. Yvonne Kason who was almost killed in a plane crash into a lake which resulted in an NDE. After she recovered, she began to have strange visions in her mind that she couldn’t explain. One of these visions concerned a friend of hers. When Dr. Kason thought of her friend, she would see a vision in her mind of a “brain covered with pus.” Dr. Kason knew that this was an excellent symbolic vision referring to the deadly disease meningitis. The problem was that her friend was perfectly healthy at the time, exhibited absolutely no signs of meningitis, and there was no reason to suspect she had it. Dr. Kason begged her friend to get tested for meningitis. After an amount of reluctance, her friend got tested. Surprisingly, the test was positive. As a result of Dr. Kason’s NDE, her friend was able to get treated for meningitis at its early stage before it had time to become deadly. Dr. Kason continues to have such visions. She now realizes that, as a result of her NDE, that is now psychic. Her story affirms that useful things are indeed brought back from NDEs.
NDE researcher Dr. Kenneth Ring describes an NDEr who was cured of cancer during his NDE: “One quite remarkable instance was shared with me by Howard Mikel, Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at Wichita State University in Kansas, who investigated this case very thoroughly and can authenticate it. The story, in brief, involved a patient by the name of Ralph Duncan, who in the mid-1970s was dying of leukemia. He apparently was told he had only a short time to live and was prepared to die. But while hospitalized, he had an NDE, and during it, he encountered a luminous being, whom he took to be Jesus (though Ralph observed that it did not look anything like the traditional images of him), and whose eyes were ‘shooting fire.’ In any event, there was then a telepathic communication from this being in the form of three shot phrases, which were: ‘That’s enough, it’s dead, it’s gone.’ These words, Ralph said, were still ringing in his ears as he returned to his body. Afterward, puzzling about all this, he was mystified about the significance of the phrase, ‘that’s enough.’ But, he continues, ‘I do know what he meant when he said, ‘It’s dead.’ To me it meant that the germ was dead. I no longer have leukemia.’ To my mind, however, the entire set phrases coheres meaningfully in the context of this healing. For instance, when the being, his eyes ‘shooting fire,’ says, ‘That’s enough,’ it means in effect, ‘I’ve zapped you with enough voltage for this to cure you.’ And then, ‘it’s dead, it’s gone.’ The last I heard about this case, in 1989, Ralph was still living near Boulder, Colorado.”
Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) was a Christian mystic who had regular NDE-like journeys and brought back medical cures and information on future events that ultimately came true. In 1910, the New York Times carried two pages of headlines and pictures in which he was declared the “World’s Most Mysterious Man.” In 1954, the University of Chicago accepted a Ph.D. thesis based on a study of his life and work. Cayce is also considered to be the father of holistic medicine by JAMA, the prestigious medical journal. There is a complete list of the world events which Cayce successfully foretold before they occurred. Cayce was a wonder to the medical community because of his ability to diagnose and specify a treatment for gravely ill people from hundreds of miles away while out of his body. It is also documented that while in his out-of-body state, Cayce successful predicted the 1929 stock-market crash more than six months before it occurred, the Great Depression, outbreak of the First and Second World Wars, Japan’s sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler, the independence of India, the creation of the State of Israel fifteen years before the event, the deaths of two American presidents, the existence of an unknown Jewish sect called the Essenes eleven years before the Dead Sea Scrolls were found (which was verified through archaeological excavations after his death.), invention of the laser in 1958, and his own death before his two sons returned home from overseas. For many decades now, the Edgar Cayce Foundation has been around to research the vast amount of information he received.
Although a large body of knowledge exists about the brain, “The brain has not explained the mind fully” according to renowned brain surgeon Wilder Penfield. Materialistic science has yet to produce a conclusive model of consciousness. This is mainly due to its inability to quantify first-person, subjective experiences. Materialism views only objective, observable experiments verifiable by third parties to be valid. The current scientific method relies only upon repeatable experiments to verify a hypothesis; but its limit is reached when quantifying consciousness. Mainstream materialistic scientists claim consciousness is produced entirely by the brain. This is analogous to claiming television sounds and images are produced entirely by television sets, despite the fact television sounds and images are produced by TV stations transmitting radio waves.
9. Forgetting Total Knowledge Upon Return
a. Conscious Forgetting of Knowledge
NDErs often describe encounters with vast, luminous realms of understanding – states in which knowledge is complete, instantaneous, and intimately woven into the soul. Yet those who return frequently speak of an unexpected limitation: only a fraction of that extraordinary insight can be carried back into earthly life. This perceived “amnesia” is not portrayed as a flaw but as an intentional aspect of the human experience, a veil that allows individuals to live, learn, and grow within the constraints of physical existence. Many NDErs describe receiving immense revelations – sometimes as downloads, images, or entire fields of information – only to find that those truths recede upon awakening in the body. What remains is often a deep emotional imprint, a sense of having known far more than can be expressed, and a gradual unfolding of insights over time. The following testimonies illustrate this recurring theme: the soul’s temporary immersion in total knowledge, the purposeful forgetting that follows, and the subtle ways fragments of that higher wisdom continue to guide life after the experience.
Martha Anne St. Claire learned that humans have spiritual amnesia of their pre-birth knowledge: “[Humans] have spiritual amnesia, having forgotten the knowledge we possessed before birth; there is a higher consciousness for each of us and it is important that we connect with God through prayer and meditation to be awakened in our souls.”
Sandra Rogers experienced unlimited knowledge which she couldn’t take with her upon return: “While I was in its (the Light’s) presence I had unlimited knowledge about anything I wanted to know… I was also told that I could only take back the knowledge I needed to sustain myself, although I would be given insights to help others and me along the way as I continued my life journey.” When Rogers asked Jesus why she could not take all the knowledge back with her, she was told that it would result in her appearing and being considered “abnormal” to the rest of society. She then realized that people such as the mentally retarded are special people who know much more than they are able to express.
Laurelynn Martin learned we are made to forget our higher knowledge to have human experiences: “We have chosen to forget most of our knowledge in order to come to Earth and have human experiences.”
Scott S. couldn’t recall all the information he downloaded: “To my dismay, I remembered the love, but could not remember or recall all of the extremely incredible information that had downloaded into me.”
Katherine D. downloaded images and information but couldn’t remember it upon return: “As I was being pulled backwards, I saw him (a Being of Light) ‘throw’ a stack of color at me like a Frisbee. I felt like images and information were being downloaded into my brain… I know I died. Now, I just want to know what the man in the tunnel downloaded to me.”
Brad downloaded knowledge which he couldn’t remember upon return: “I had a few ‘downloads’ during this tunnel experience, some of which I struggle to remember to this day. This pains me a great deal as I can remember the circumstance but I can’t remember the precise information I was gathering.”
Anne W. downloaded messages leading to the realization that we lose our awareness of Truth at birth: “As the messages were downloading within me, I would ‘get it’ and deeper wisdom would continue to unfold. I then realized our separation is at birth when we are born into the human condition and develop a human mind, where we lose our ‘awareness’ of the Truth, our oneness and unconditional love self that we really are.”
Jim B. downloaded information for unpacking upon return: “It was as if some of it was too big to immediately convey and was like a file I had to download, and then unpack when I got back. It is still unfolding.”
Sara A. downloaded knowledge like a computer to process later: “The whole experience reminded me of transferring a huge program from a website into a temporary internet file and then actually opening it onto your computer and allowing it to download fully at its own pace. This felt like it needed to happen in order for my body and mind to be able to handle and process the huge energetic shift and all the information that I had absorbed.”
b. Subconscious Remembering of Knowledge
NDErs often return to life with profound knowledge that does not fully surface in ordinary waking awareness. Instead, many NDErs describe returning to life with an inner reservoir of wisdom that lies just beneath consciousness – revealing itself only when the moment is right. Rather than retaining explicit memories of everything they encountered, NDErs frequently report that their insights are stored at a subconscious level. The following NDE testimonies illustrate how NDE knowledge often returns not as conscious recall, but as a subtle, intuitive awakening within the subconscious itself.
Kristen D. described her knowledge gained as subconscious memories: “They said that I would remember things as they became important, and that the knowledge would in all likelihood be subconscious.”
After his NDE, Timothy V. learned about truth through his subconscious: “I can say that when I hear people talk on the subject of life and the subject of why we’re here, my soul resonates when I hear the truth. I just know it is the truth. It’s more of a subconscious thing.”
Carolyn B. learned that our subconscious knows what’s in our heart: “I came to realize that we often don’t even know what is in our own heart. I relate this also to the subconscious.”
Izzy‘s NDE changed his subconscious to remember his NDE knowledge: “During general anesthesia, there was no recollection whatsoever. At a subconscious level, everything changed. I woke up after resuscitation with a totally different view on my brother’s death that occurred in 2004, and other loved ones who had passed away.”
Bernardita B. heard telepathic knowledge as the voice of her subconscious: “The voice I heard is not spoken . It was a voice of your subconscious. As if it was a telepathic communication.”
Renee M. learned her NDE allowed her subconsciousness to control her: “[I experienced] a big awareness ‘wake up’ to the point of changing me totally! Allowing my subconscious mind to take control of my decisions.”
10. Knowledge About Pre-Existence
Numerous NDErs discover – or re-discover – that they possessed detailed knowledge about an existence before birth. This knowledge is often experienced as a remembering. NDEs often reveal a profound sense that our lives are part of a much larger spiritual reality. Many NDErs report memories of pre-existence – a state of awareness before birth where the soul chose lessons, relationships, and challenges for growth. During the NDE, some encounter a Council of Elders, wise and loving Beings of Light who help them understand their life’s purpose with a clarity that is difficult to retain on Earth. Others describe being shown their life’s mission, as a pathway of learning, service, and love they agreed to undertake. In these encounters, people frequently receive forgotten knowledge – insights about their soul’s origin, the interconnectedness of all life, or universal knowledge – though much of it fades upon returning to the physical world. Together, these elements suggest that NDEs offer brief access to a deeper, timeless “Intelligence” guiding the soul’s journey.
11. Knowledge About Earth Life
NDEs often come with amazing knowledge that touch nearly every dimension of earthly existence. Many NDErs report that Earth is a “School” for the soul, that life itself is God, and that human beings are spiritually interconnected. NDErs describe sex as a sacred exchange of energy, religion as a partial reflection of greater universal knowledge, and prayer as actual connection between God and humanity. Science and spirituality appear unified from the vantage point of the Light, while war and evil are understood as consequences of ignorance and separation rather than God’s will. NDEs frequently show suicide as a tragic interruption of one’s learning rather than a path to escape suffering. Death itself is revealed as a transition into a more expansive reality, often preceded by out-of-body experiences, seeing a silver cord connection to the body, and veridical perceptions validated later. Some NDErs are shown possible futures, suggesting that human evolution is guided but not predetermined. Together, these insights form a coherent vision in which consciousness is primary, love is the fundamental law, and every life has meaning beyond what we can presently see.
12. Knowledge From the Life Review
NDEs often present knowledge as a remembering – a sudden, panoramic awareness of truth and interconnectedness. During the life review, NDErs describe an instant reliving their actions through the eyes and feelings of others, discovering that the ultimate measure of a life is the love one gives or withholds. This spiritual encounter unfolds in a realm of timelessness where past, present, and future seem to exist simultaneously, allowing consciousness to expand beyond the limits of the brain. Many report being lovingly told, “You’re not ready to die,” or “It’s not your time,” revealing that their earthly mission is unfinished and that the wisdom gained – about compassion and spiritual growth – must be carried back to help others and increase their own soul’s development.
13. Knowledge About Afterlife Beings
NDEs often reveal a spectrum of afterlife beings and spiritual realities that expand our understanding of the soul and spirit. Many NDErs describe the soul as an orb or radiant sphere of consciousness guided by a Higher Self holding our higher knowledge and purpose. Encounters with luminous figures, such as the Being of Light, God, Jesus Christ, angels, and compassionate spirit guides, emphasize unconditional love, guidance, and the unity of all life. NDEs overwhelmingly report a universe governed by love, learning, and free will, with many NDErs affirming that Satan does not exist as an independent evil being, but as a human projection or symbol of ignorance. These testimonies collectively suggest that the afterlife is populated by benevolent intelligences devoted to our growth and awakening.
14. Knowledge About Afterlife Realms
NDEs often reveal knowledge about afterlife realms. Many NDErs report first passing through a dark Void, a realm of stillness and pure awareness, before entering the tunnel filled with light and overwhelming love. Some NDErs recount brief journeys through hellish realms that reflect inner turmoil, followed by ascent into heaven, a realm of beauty, harmony, and unconditional acceptance. Others describe Cities of Light, vast luminous realms inhabited by advanced souls, along with awe-inspiring heavenly structures such as the Temple of Knowledge, where timeless wisdom is imparted directly into the soul. Many also encounter a barrier or boundary – often a gate, river, mist, or line of light – representing the point beyond which returning to earthly life is no longer possible. Together, these realms illustrate a multidimensional afterlife designed for spiritual growth and the continued evolution of consciousness.
15. Knowledge About Afterlife Phenomena
NDEs often reveal forms of afterlife knowledge centered on profound emotional states far beyond ordinary human perception. NDErs describe intense emotions – overwhelming love, peace, joy, and belonging – that feel more real and expansive than anything on Earth. Many report telepathic communication, where thoughts, feelings, and intentions are shared instantly and transparently without the limitations of spoken language. NDErs frequently hear heavenly music unlike any earthly sound – harmonic, multidimensional, and alive – conveying wisdom, comfort, and a sense of cosmic order. Perhaps most powerfully, many NDErs describe a profound homecoming, a recognition of returning to a place of origin where they feel fully known, unconditionally loved, and truly themselves, as though awakening from a long journey back to their real spiritual home.
16. Knowledge About Afterlife Concepts
NDErs repeatedly explain that the brain cannot hold the vast amount of knowledge encountered in the afterlife. This limitation is often interpreted as (a) the physical body is not designed for full cosmic consciousness; (b) forgetting is part of the human experience; (c) Earth is a school where partial knowledge promotes growth; and (d) complete knowledge is restored after death. Our current “veil” of forgetting is therefore intentional yet purposeful.
NDEs often learn of higher afterlife concepts where the interconnectedness of karma, reincarnation, and even cosmic patterns akin to astrology becomes vividly understood. Many NDErs report being shown how their actions create consequences that shape future lifetimes, revealing karma not as punishment but as a compassionate learning system that guides the soul’s evolution. Some NDErs describe seeing their past and future incarnations as part of a larger cosmic design, where the soul chooses circumstances for growth in alignment with spiritual patterns that resemble astrological themes or soul contracts. These revelations frequently lead to profound aftereffects: heightened intuition, increased compassion, sensitivity to electronic energy, a sense of life purpose, and a deeper awareness of the unseen forces guiding human experience. For many NDErs, the transformative knowledge gained in this state permanently reshapes their understanding of life and the soul’s eternal journey.
Dr. Kenneth Ring’s study revealed NDErs receiving personal knowledge of reincarnation: “Seventy percent of the group of NDErs demonstrated belief in reincarnation. Claims have been documented by other researchers of direct knowledge of reincarnation which became available during the NDE itself. An example of this type of out-of-body research of knowledge can be seen in a letter written to Dr. Ring by John Robinson: ‘It is a matter of personal knowledge from what the being with whom I spoke during my NDE told me about my older son, that he had had fourteen incarnations in female physical bodies previous to the life he has just had.'”
For centuries, Christian doctrines have shaped how millions understand God, creation, human nature, sin, salvation, resurrection, and the afterlife. Yet in recent decades, NDEs have emerged as a remarkable spiritual source with hundreds of thousands of testimonies offering firsthand accounts of God, Jesus, angels, heavenly realms, and the deeper spiritual laws governing human life. These modern experiences shed a new light on ancient teachings, revealing a spiritual depth often obscured by strictly literal interpretations. For example, NDE testimonies consistently describe God as love, light, and life – precisely the same attributes the Bible assigns to God. Many NDErs return with insights that correspond with the mystical traditions of Christianity while challenging literalist interpretations that developed centuries later. Concepts such as the Trinity, heaven and hell, resurrection, angels, judgment, salvation, and even the nature of Jesus himself take on expanded, spiritually coherent meanings when viewed through the combined lens of biblical symbolism and NDE testimony. Rather than contradicting Christianity, NDEs often illuminate its deeper spiritual reality.
17. Conclusion
Altogether, the NDE testimonies and research surveyed in this article suggest that knowledge, as revealed in NDEs, is far more than information stored in the brain. It appears instead as a living, luminous reality woven into the very fabric of consciousness itself. In the light, NDErs report knowing with a completeness that our ordinary minds can scarcely imagine: answers arrive before questions are formed, life’s events are seen in all their interconnections, and the great patterns of karma, reincarnation, and spiritual law are grasped in an instant. Again and again, NDErs insist that real knowledge is inseparable from love, and that what matters most in the end is not what we know in theory, but how we embody that knowing in compassion, forgiveness, and service to others.
If Earth is indeed a “School” for the soul, as so many NDErs affirm, then forgetting is part of the curriculum. The veil that obscures our pre-birth memory and our moments of total understanding is not a cosmic accident but a spiritual strategy. We are meant to struggle, to question, to grow from partial knowledge into deeper wisdom. NDEs portray this limitation as a gift: without it, free will, courage, empathy, and authentic moral choice would be impossible. In the afterlife realms, knowledge can be downloaded, remembered, and shared in an instant; but here on Earth, it must be sought, tested, and lived. The contrast between these two modes of knowing suggests that the purpose of life is not to become omniscient on Earth, but to deepen our capacity to love and to align ourselves with the higher knowledge we dimly sense and occasionally glimpse.
At the same time, the many NDE reports of telepathic downloads, akashic “libraries,” life reviews of total knowledge, veridical perceptions, and even scientific or healing insights challenge purely materialist accounts of the mind. If blind people can see during NDEs, if the dying can accurately perceive events in distant rooms, if complex mathematical or medical knowledge can emerge from NDEs, then consciousness may not be confined to the skull. The NDE literature points toward a nonlocal mind that can tap into a vast informational field – a “matrix” or “grid” that remembers every thought, word, and deed. From this perspective, the brain is less a producer of consciousness and more a receiver or filter, limiting a much greater awareness to the narrow bandwidth of human life.
NDEs also illuminate the moral dimension of knowledge. In the life review, knowledge is the direct, felt understanding of how our choices affected others. We come to know ourselves as others experienced us, to see each word and deed in the light of love. In that realm, self-deception falls away, and what remains is a simple, piercing insight: every moment is an opportunity to learn and to love more. This is knowledge that judges no one from outside, yet reveals everything from within. It explains why many NDErs return with a transformed sense of responsibility, a desire to heal relationships, to live more honestly, and to use their time on Earth more wisely.
Ultimately, the knowledge revealed in NDEs is as humbling as it is exalted. It hints that we are eternal beings of light who existed before birth and will continue long after death; that our lives are embedded in a larger spiritual reality of spirit guides, councils, and realms designed for spiritual growth; and that love is the underlying law of the universe. At the same time, it reminds us that we do not – and cannot – carry all this understanding consciously while in the body. What we are given instead is enough light for the next step: the revelation that we are known and loved, the conviction that our choices matter, and the sense that there is a deeper knowledge inviting us to awaken.
In this way, NDEs function as higher teachings for this world. NDEs invite us to treat every experience, every relationship, and every challenge as part of our soul’s education. They urge us to seek knowledge that expands our capacity to love, to be wary of beliefs that divide or diminish, and to honor the inner guidance that reveals a greater reality. NDEs show that what we learn – especially concerning love – is never lost. Our possessions, titles, and arguments we once clung to will fall away. What will remain – what will travel with us through the tunnel and into the Light – is the knowledge we have integrated into our being, and the love through which that knowledge has been expressed.
