1. Introduction to the Light and NDEs

In his book entitled “God at the Speed of Light“, NDE researcher Dr. T. Lee Baumann describes the “supernatural” and scientific qualities of light: Light was pervasive at the Big Bang and is predicted at the Universe’s demise (alpha and omega). The second law of thermodynamics (entropy) dictates that an infinite amount of organization (hence, design) existed in the singularity of the Big Bang. All matter is ultimately reducible to electromagnetic radiation (light). Time ceases to exist at light speed. The energy of light is infinite. Physicists reveal experiments that show that light particles communicate! Eminent physicist, David Bohm, viewed all matter as “condensed” or “frozen light.” Physicist Stephen Hawking once stated ,”When you break subatomic particles down to their most elemental level, you are left with nothing but pure light.” Light is the loving entity that welcomes the dying in NDEs. It is human observation that transforms light waves to light particles (i.e., how we experience reality).

Carl Jung quote

The world’s major religious texts refer to God in terms of light. In the Christian Bible, God is described as light: “God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). Concerning Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama states that light is “a common image in all the major religious traditions. In the Buddhist context, light is particularly associated with wisdom and knowledge; darkness is associated with ignorance and a state of misknowledge” (Dalai Lama, 2002). Buddhism in general teaches that people see a “Clear Light” after death. In Islam, the Quran states that Allah is “the light (Nūr) of the heavens and the Earth” (Verse of Light). in Rabbinic Judaism and Kabbalah, “Ohr Ein Sof” means the “Infinite Light.” In Hinduism, “Diwali” is a festival of lights – a celebration of the victory of light over darkness. In Zoroastrianism, God is described as “light” which is the oldest non-anthropomorphic conception of God.

NDE researcher Jenny Yates described how the phenomenology of the archetypal Being of Light in world myths and religions shows the parallels with the light in the NDE that are consistent across time and cultures. Yates shows how the phenomenon of the Being of Light of the NDE has parallels to: (1) The light of God’s presence reflected in the shining face of Moses on the mountain; (2) The light of the Shekinah in mystical Judaism; (3) The transfiguration of Christ; (4) The light of Sophia (Wisdom) in Christian Gnosticism; (5) The union of the individual and the universal soul called AtmanBrahman in Hinduism; (6) The Clear Light of enlightenment in Tibetan Buddhism.

NDE researcher Nora Spurgin states that the amount of light within people in heaven is determined by the quality of their heart and life: “Our outward appearance in heaven is determined by the quality of our heart and life. One’s inner quality is perceived as light. Our features are visible but the light that comes from our very essence is the identifying feature. For example, because they lived totally for other people, Jesus and other religious leaders emanate brilliant light.”

Many of the NDE testimonies referenced in this article are drawn from firsthand accounts generously shared on the Near-Death Experience Research Foundation (NDERF.org) website. I gratefully acknowledge NDERF and its founders, Dr. Jeffrey Long and Jody Long, for their decades of dedication to collecting, preserving, and publishing the world’s most comprehensive archives of NDE testimonies.

2. Light as God

Many NDErs say they encountered an extraordinary light whom they describe as very bright but also gentle and comforting. This light often fills them with deep peace, love, and understanding. Many NDErs feel that the light is aware of them and knows them completely. Because of this, many NDErs believe the light is God or a direct expression of the divine. NDErs often explain this light based on their own beliefs or religion. A Christian may believe the light is Jesus or God, while others see it as a universal spiritual presence or the Higher Self. Researchers such as Dr. Raymond Moody and Dr. Kenneth Ring have found that meeting a Being of Light is one of the most common elements of a deep NDE. The following testimonies show how different NDErs understood the light they encountered.

Mellen-Thomas Benedict saw the light in his NDE change into different figures, like Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, mandalas, archetypal images and signs. He was told that our beliefs shape the kind of feedback we receive from the light. For example, if you were a Buddhist or Catholic or Fundamentalist, you would receive a feedback loop of your own beliefs. The light revealed itself to Mellen-Thomas as our “Higher Self matrix,” a mandala of human souls. He saw that what we call our Higher Self in each of us is a matrix and all Higher Selves are connected as one being. All humans are connected as one being and we are actually the same being, just different aspects of the same being.

Christian Andreason described his encounter with the light: “I was washed with a brilliant white, golden and rose colored light which filled me with indescribable happiness. I knew this light had created me, as it had everything else. The light was God, both Father and Mother Creator mixed together in a colorful body of light I have since learned to call, Christ.”

Christians frequently interpret the Being of Light to be Jesus or God. In research, such as that compiled by Dr. Raymond Moody in his seminal 1975 book Life After Life, the Being of Light emerges as a cross-cultural phenomenon, though its perceived identity shifts. For Christians, it’s frequently interpreted as Jesus or God, aligning with biblical imagery of divine light (e.g., “I am the light of the world” from John 8:12). In a study by the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS.org), many Western experiencers described a figure matching their preconceived notions of a deity or savior.

Josiane Antonette saw the Light as the vehicle of divinity: “It is the consciousness of God. We stand at the center of our own creation because at the center is the sun or the light of the ONE. We exist as a preordained Idea manifest within the Self. As an image of the One, so is the One an image of us; the mind of humanity is made manifest through the physical body as the ONE manifests through the body of the sun. Life is a solar idea.”

According to NDE researcher Dr. Ken R. Vincent: “One of the most commonly reported characteristics of a deep NDE is the experience of Light or Being of Light (Vincent, 1994). Some NDErs feel that this Light represents God or God’s emissary, as in the following: ‘I was in the Universe and I was Light. It takes all the fear of dying out of you. It was Heavenly. I was in the Presence of God.’ (Vincent, 1994, p.27) ‘I went directly into the Light, and my pain ceased. There was a feeling of extreme peace.’” (Vincent, 1994, p. 27)

Kevin Williams states that the most astounding similarity between NDEs and Tibetan Buddhism is the encounter with a “Clear Light” as described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. According to the Tibetan teachings, at the moment of death, the Clear Light dawns in all its splendor before the dying person. Tibetan teachings stress that by recognizing yourself as this Clear Light, you will attain liberation from the cycle of reincarnation. Many NDErs are convinced the Being of Light is their Higher Self. This is certainly in agreement with the Tibetan teachings.

Thomas Sawyer saw that the light is God – the light of Christ: “The light I am describing is whatever most people would describe as God. That’s the description. It meant the same to me as the word God. It was in fact the light of Jesus Christ.”

Dr. Kenneth Ring describes Emanuel Swedenborg‘s (1688–1772) afterlife insight into the light of God: “At death, we enter a world where, in short, our inner essence becomes ‘the environment’ in which we find ourselves. In the end, Swedenborg says ‘everyone returns after death to his own life.’ A person who has lived a life of self-centered cruelty finds himself continuing to live that way, far from the light of God. On the other hand, a person who has truly lived for others and for whom the existence of the Divine is at the heart of his life, is already in heaven, Swedenborg asserts, and continues to experience directly the Light of heaven after death and to find himself in the company of like-minded others. Either way, according to Swedenborg, everyone ‘is going to be an image of his affection, or his love.’ So it is, if we follow Swedenborg’s teachings, that we are building our heaven and hell now, and living in them now, too, depending on the inner meaning of our actions in the world.”

During actor Peter Sellers‘ NDE, he was attracted by the light of God more than anything: “I looked around myself and I saw an incredibly beautiful bright loving white light above me. I wanted to go to that white light more than anything. I’ve never wanted anything more. I know there was love, real love, on the other side of the light which was attracting me so much. It was kind and loving and I remember thinking ‘That’s God.”

Larry L. saw God as the light of euphoria: “When I got to the light it was like all of a sudden, there was nothing but the most intense bright white all around me. I instantly realized the most peaceful, pain free, contented, euphoric state that I can imagine. God does exist, and I think God is the light that I saw and stood in.”

Rahmaan learned from the light that everything is collectively God: “Then I asked, ‘What is God?’ The Light replied, ‘Every thing collectively is God and His thought. All of us, all the particles of this world and all the worlds, collectively make God’s mind. We are like cells in the God’s body, each of us are a small part of Him.'”

Jeff H. saw the light of God as the pure love of everything: “God is pure love. Pure super bright white light of energy is the best I can explain it. God is everything and everywhere and we are a part of God. God is in all of us, good and bad.”

Jesus said in the Bible: “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” (John 3:19-21)

3. Light Radiating Love or Compassion

Many NDEts describe encountering a brilliant light that radiates overwhelming love. They often say this light feels alive, intelligent, and deeply personal. They describe it as warm, welcoming, and filled with compassion. Many feel completely accepted in its presence, as if every part of them is understood and embraced. What is striking is how similar these descriptions are, even among people from very different cultures, religions, and life experiences. Many NDErs interpret this light as God – the ultimate source of life, love, and consciousness. Whatever words they use, the feeling they describe is the same – an intense, unconditional love unlike anything they have known on Earth. The following NDE testimonies describe how different people experienced this mysterious light during their NDEs and how they understood its meaning. Each testimony offers a glimpse into a realm where love appears to be the most powerful and fundamental reality.

Kimberly Clark-Sharp immediately understood that the light was entirely composed of love, all directed at her. This wonderful, vibrant love was very personal, as you might describe secular love, but also sacred. Though she had never seen God, she recognized this light as the light of God.

Christian Andreason “stood in the wonderful presence of a great Being of brightness and knew with my whole heart that I was in the midst of my Creator, who is a Being of unconditional love and infinite light.”

Dr. Rajiv Parti encountered a God of light, experienced as pure love. In God’s presence Dr. Parti asked, “Who are you, Lord?” A robed figure with a gold sash and a beard stepped from the light and said, “I’m Jesus, your savior.” Raised Hindu, Dr. Parti was confused by the specifically Christian form of the answer; later he concluded that the divine he met was not confined to any single creed – that God is the God of all nations.”

Jayne Smith experienced the light of God as an overwhelming ecstasy of love: “Then I simply remember I became more blissful, more rapturous, more ecstatic. I was just filling and filling with this light and love that was in the light… I reached the point in the rapture of it all where I thought to myself suddenly, the first thought. ‘I wonder how much more of this I can stand before I shatter?’ With that thought, the light began to recede. So, the universe will not let us shatter. We cannot take in more of this bliss and joy than we are able to handle at a time.”

RaNelle Wallace entered the light that emanated love, hope, and peace: “A dot of light appeared far off in front of me. It was just a pinpoint, a tiny speck in the distance, but its brilliance distinguished it from all other lights around me and I instinctively pressed towards it. Emanating from it was a love and hope and peace that my soul hungered for. I wanted, I needed this brilliant, radiant light.”

The Being of Light filled Beverly Brodsky with the light of love: “I experienced, in ineffable magnificence, communion with the light being. Now I was filled with not just all knowledge, but also with all love. It was as if the light were poured in and through me.”

Elane Durham encountered the light as a most intense amount of love: “As the light got closer to me I realized that it had a personality to it. Love and understanding were emanating from the light. It was the most intense amount of love that you can imagine. It was as though you were in the presence of the one person in your life who had loved you beyond anything, despite what you might have done, and that love was magnified many times.”

Juliet Nightingale experienced the light as pure love: “I knew with total certainty that everything was evolving exactly the way it should and that the ultimate destiny for every living being is to return to the Source, the Light, Pure Love.”

NDE researcher Nora Spurgin states the following about the light: “In the spirit world, God’s truth is represented by light and God’s love by warmth. Those people in the spirit world who live in harmony with God live in light and warmth. Conversely, if a person living on Earth has stunted their spiritual growth through an undeveloped or misdirected lifestyle, or has led a totally self-centered life, or has hurt other people, that person’s spiritual environment will reflect these realities. A self-centered life places a person in an area of the spiritual world with like-minded people who have yet to learn how unselfishness advances the soul. Locations that are distant from God are said to be dark, cold and inhospitable. They reflect the spirits of those dwelling therein. In between these two extremes are many levels representing different stages of spiritual growth. The central factor determining our particular level is the degree to which we have lived for the sake of others, and the extent to which we have helped others on the path of love. In this respect, the actions of loving, serving and teaching others carry the highest spiritual value.”

Joseph Kerrick was shown that the light of God is unconditional love: “[The light] showed me that God is love. By spreading love, you make God stronger. By making God stronger, He can, in return, help you. He told me your love has to be unconditional. That is the only rule he really has.”

Estelle D. was bathed in universal love: “I saw an immense light. I moved toward the light, feeling intense happiness and a fullness and peace I had never known. I felt my soul expand… It felt like it encompassed the whole universe. It was wonderful as I bathed in universal love.”

Gary M. felt like the light of love held everything together: “I felt as if I had found the eternal fountain of love and I was splashing around in it. The overwhelming ‘vibe’ from the light beings was love. It almost felt like love was the glue holding everything together including myself.”

David became the light and love: “An explosion of Ecstasy and Love started from my belly and expanded into the light itself. Soon, I became the Light and became Innocence, Love, Ecstasy Peace, Power and Beauty and Wisdom of the Light.”

Melanie E. described God as the light of love in various religions: “I believe that there is one God – whom is that light of love. I believe that the light could be the Christian God, the Muslim God, the Hindu God, the Jewish God, the Buddhist God and I believe that does not matter.”

Paula S. saw God’s light of love as all consuming and all forgiving: “[Love is] what God is all about and not about religion or rituals. No human can ever love with the love I felt in that light. It is all consuming, all forgiving. Nothing matches it. It is like the day you looked into the eyes of your child for the first time magnified a million times. Indescribable.”

Barbara S. experienced the light as pure unearthly unconditional love: “All I know is the love on the Other Side is pure with no strings attached. We on Earth love nothing like I felt over there. I felt totally loved and accepted when I came into the light. On Earth there are always conditions to love.”

William C. interpreted God’s light as unconditional love: “I believe ‘The White Light’ is our interpretation of God. It was a warm, pure, earnest, compassionate, and unconditional LOVE.”

Diane Goble saw a light of overwhelming love and bliss: “It was a brilliant flash of light and I was allowed to see into it for a brief moment and experience a feeling of love so profound, powerful and overwhelming that I can only describe it as pure Bliss (even though that doesn’t begin to describe it).”

Tom M. saw a light of unconditional love: “When I reached the light, I felt unconditional love coming from the light. I had never felt love like that before my NDE or since… The love was truly unconditional.”

Timothy V. saw a light as pure love: “I was instantly in this place of golden light and pure love. I was standing in this area of light without boundaries. The love was incredible!”

Nicole BD felt the light as love and pure happiness: “I had no feeling other than LOVE. I had no thought other than reaching the LIGHT. I felt pure happiness and joy. It was the most beautiful feeling that words could never even come close to describing.”

Lauren K. entered into a light of pure love: “I left my body and went into an aura of all white light! It was totally warm and Peaceful, pure Love emanating through me and around me.”

Bonnie J. experienced a light of love like nothing else: “All around me was bright, bright light and I sensed so much love I felt as if I’d never ever felt before.”

Toni M. saw a light within an overwhelming love: “All I remember was a beautiful white bright light, and the overwhelming feeling of love and acceptance. I felt like this was the best feeling I could ever have asked for. I have never felt that kind of love before or since.”

Patsy D. was surrounded by light and unconditional love: “I turned around and was immersed in light. I was surrounded by unconditional love, and total acceptance. I knew I was complete at last. Never had I felt such safety and serenity before.”

Lael saw a light containing all love and bliss: “I kept looking into the light. Within it were all the love, beauty, acceptance, and bliss imaginable.”

Tom S. felt infinite love from the light: “I was suddenly in front of a great Light. It had to have been God! It was so powerful that no words can describe it. The closest I can come is to say it was like being suddenly placed a few feet from the Sun; but instead of feeling heat, you feel Love, infinite Love.

Patsy D. was surrounded by a light of unconditional love: “I turned around and was immersed in light. I was surrounded by unconditional love, and total acceptance. I knew I was complete at last.”

Jeffrey Olsen saw a light of pure, unconditional love: “I was surrounded by a tangible light, so thick I could feel it. It was pure, unconditional love.”

During a child’s NDE, he was drawn to the light of love: “Off in the distance I saw a very small light. It was drawing me to it. I felt myself rushing towards this light with a great amount of speed. I was not frightened. When I came into the light, it represented peace and joy, but most of all a deep unconditional love.”

4. Light That Draws the Soul Like a Magnet

Many NDErs describe encountering a powerful light that often feels alive, loving, and deeply meaningful. One of the most common elements of these NDEs is the strong sense of being drawn toward the light. NDErs have compared this feeling like the pull of a magnet – an irresistible attraction that gently but powerfully draws them closer. NDErs say the pull of this light is not frightening. Instead, it feels peaceful, comforting, and filled with love. As they move toward it, they may feel a deep desire to merge with this light, as if returning to a place that is completely familiar and safe. The closer they come, the stronger the attraction becomes. The following testimonies describe this magnetic pull toward the light which reflects the same striking theme: a brilliant light that draws the soul toward it with a powerful yet loving force.

Tiffany Snow was drawn to the light of God like a magnet: “The bright light was still far from me. I wanted to go on, I felt like a magnet, irresistibly drawn. The desire to ‘blend’ had grown stronger the closer we got. I knew it was the very Presence of God himself.”

Hafur was drawn to the light like a magnet: “As if by a giant magnet, the light drew me to it and I was submerged in its interior where all there was, was light. I forgot I had a body and felt fused with the light. In that moment, I experienced a feeling of ‘plural unity’ and understood everything with extreme clarity.”

Dan M. was drawn to the light like a magnet: “I saw a brilliant and beautiful light drawing me towards it… It was like a magnet drawing me in but I was not able to get as close as I wanted.”

Andrew P. was drawn to the light like a magnet: “Oh what a wonderful, beautiful, enchanting, warm and loving Light. I’m getting closer and closer, it’s as if I’m being drawn into the Light by a gentle, giant magnet.”

Nicole S. was drawn to the light like a magnet: “I remember this long tunnel full of brightness. I was drawn to the light like a magnet.”

Henrietta K. was drawn to the light like a magnet: “That light seemed to be the source of all the light, all the love, all the goodness, pleasure and peace in all of existence. It was the source of everything. It seemed to be the only thing that had ever mattered. It was contained within everything, it united everything and I was drawn to it as if by a powerful magnet.”

George E. was drawn to the light like a magnet: “I was being gently channeled towards an incredibly bright, white light. The light had a brilliance that didn’t hurt my eyes. Its attraction was so powerful, like a huge magnet that was the size of the entire Universe. It was totally irresistible.”

Tammy H. was drawn to the light like a magnet: “There was a love so strong, with such a magnetic pull that it drew me to the light more and more.”

5. Light as Brilliant White and Golden

NDErs often describe the light as incredibly bright, yet gentle and comforting rather than painful. Many NDErs say this light shines with a brilliant white color mixed with warm shades of gold. Just as important as its appearance is the powerful feeling that comes with it – an overwhelming sense of peace, love, and acceptance. These descriptions appear again and again in accounts from different people, cultures, and backgrounds. The light is often experienced after leaving the physical body or moving through a tunnel or a dark, empty Void. The following testimonies illustrate how consistently this radiant white-and-gold light appears in NDEs and how deeply it affects those who encounter it.

The light from the Being of Light appears as a brilliant white or golden color. The Being of Light typically appears during a phase of the NDE where the individual leaves their physical body, often after passing through a tunnel or Void. Descriptions consistently emphasize its radiant, luminous quality – sometimes a brilliant white or golden light that doesn’t hurt the eyes – and an indescribable sense of unconditional love and acceptance.

Kimberly Clark-Sharp experienced an enormous explosion beneath her during her NDE. It was an explosion of light that rolled out to the farthest limits of her vision. She had never seen anything as luminous or as golden as this light.

Betty Eadie saw the light of Jesus as both white and golden: “I saw that the light immediately around him (Jesus) was golden, as if his whole body had a golden halo around it, and I could see that the golden halo burst out from around him and spread into a brilliant, magnificent whiteness that extended out for some distance.”

A white, golden light beckoned Laurelynn Martin forward from the Void: “The freedom of total peace was intensified beyond any ecstatic feeling I’ve ever felt on Earth. In the distance, a horizon of glorious white, golden light beckoned me forward.”

Dr. Raymond Moody describes a common element in NDEs involving the tunnel and an encounter radiant golden-white light. The experience is described as “that of being drawn into darkness through a tunnel, at an extremely high speed, until reaching a realm of radiant golden-white light.”

Another example from Dr. Raymond Moody‘s study saw a bright yellowish white light: “It was a bright yellowish white – more white. It was tremendously bright; I just can’t describe it. It seemed that it covered everything, yet it didn’t prevent me from seeing everything around me – the operating room, the doctors and nurses, everything. I could see clearly, and it wasn’t blinding.”

Ricardo AH saw a white and gold light: “In the light of the cloud, I realized that its color was white, but with a slight golden hue.”

Will S. saw a white and golden light: “The light had gorgeous golden, almost yellow, tendrils swirling around it. The color at its core was pure white… I experienced the most profoundly overwhelming, astonishing, indescribable feelings of unconditional love, peace, joy, understanding, and acceptance.”

Heidi C. was bathed in a golden white light: “The next thing I remember is waking up in the most beautiful warm, golden white light. I was bathed in it. The warmth I felt was indescribable.”

Analisa D. was surrounded by a white, almost golden light: “I was surrounded by this bright yellowish-white, almost golden light. It was brighter off into the distance, and I was seeing this light.”

Sharlene S. saw a white and golden light: “But what was over everything, and what I can’t stop thinking about, is the light. It is the most beautiful light I have ever seen – white and golden at the same time.”

Gwen P. saw a white and golden light: “Then I saw this light, like the sun’s light, but buffered. A beautiful white light with touches of gold. A wonderful warmth radiated from it.”

John C. saw a white and golden light: “The light was intense and I could feel that he was concerned for me and I could feel a lot of love the likes of which I haven’t felt before… I saw gold streaking with the bright white light also.”

Pamela D. felt a light of white or gold: “There was a radiating warmth engulfing me. I seem to remember it FELT like a white or gold light.”

Deborah G. saw the light of Jesus as white and gold: “The light all around me was bright but not blinding. Jesus had a wonderful light white with gold around him.”

Newie saw a white and gold light: “Over the horizon was white and gold light. I knew I was in the presence of something sacred.”

Dr. Fabio saw lights of white and gold: “Looking around, above the bright white light there was golden light that seemed to traverse the entire horizon, a light that also did not sting.”

6. Light Brighter Than the Sun But Not Blinding

Many NDErs describe the light as far brighter than anything seen on Earth – sometimes compared to the brightness of the sun or even many suns. Yet unlike ordinary light, it is not harmful or cause pain. Instead, NDErs say they can look directly into it without discomfort. The light is not only intensely luminous but also deeply comforting. It is often associated with feelings of peace, love, and a powerful sense of presence. NDE researchers have found this description of the bright light appearing again and again in testimonies from different people, cultures, and backgrounds. NDErs frequently describe the light as alive, intelligent, and capable of communicating without words. Some perceive a Being of Light, while others simply feel surrounded by a loving presence. The following testimonies describe encounters with a light that is brighter than the sun yet gentle and non-blinding.

The NDE studies of researchers, such as Dr. Raymond Moody and Dr. Bruce Greyson, frequently mention NDErs who describe: (1) a brilliant light brighter than the sun; (2) a loving light that communicates telepathically; (3) a Being of Light; (4) a light that does not hurt the eyes; and (5) a light associated with overwhelming peace and unconditional love.

Kimberly Clark-Sharp saw the light as brighter than hundreds of suns: “The Light was brighter than hundreds of suns, but it did not hurt my eyes. I had never seen anything as luminous or as golden as this Light, and I immediately understood it was entirely composed of love, all directed at me.”

Betty Eadie saw the light as far more brilliant than the sun: “As I approached [the light], I noticed the figure of a man standing in it, with the light radiating all around him. As I got closer the light became brilliant – brilliant beyond any description, far more brilliant than the sun – and I knew that no earthly eyes in their natural state could look upon this light without being destroyed. Only spiritual eyes could endure it – and appreciate it. As I drew closer I began to stand upright.”

Linda Stewart said the light was bright enough to blind yet she wasn’t harmed: “The light was everywhere and everything, the brightest I had ever seen and dazzling beyond description. Brilliant enough to blind or burn, yet I was not harmed.”

RaNelle Wallace saw a light brighter than the sun: “The light burst forth before me, filling everything with brightness, and I was coming upon it impossibly fast. ‘Oh, my gosh,’ I thought, ‘It’s brighter than the sun. It’ll blind me! It’ll kill me!’… My eyes still saw.”

George Ritchie saw a light brighter than any light, but didn’t hurt: “I was aware of a brilliant light. It was far brighter than any light I had ever seen, yet it did not hurt my eyes… It was as if I were standing in the presence of the purest love.”

Ian McCormack saw the light as brighter than the sun except that you can look at it: “Upon entering the tunnel I could see that the source of the light was emanating from the very end of the tunnel. It looked incredibly bright, as if it was the center of the universe. It looked literally like the source of all power, of all light. It was more brilliant than the sun, more radiant than any jewel, any diamond, brighter than a laser beam light. Yet you could look right into it.”

George Rodonaia saw a light brighter than the sun but did not hurt: “I saw a very bright light, brighter than the sun… but it did not hurt my eyes. I felt myself merging with the light.”

Thomas Sawyer saw a light brighter than a million billion welder’s torches: “The next thing is that way, way off in the distance to infinity there appeared this little speck of light. That light was very special; it was the first identifiable object that I was able to focus on, to realize that it was nothing like what I’d seen before. It was extremely bright. This speck of light was brighter than something that would immediately blind you. It was brighter than a million billion carbon arcs, or welder’s torches, anything you can possibly compare it to. It was the brightest thing I’d ever seen in my life.”

Dr. Pim van Lommel’s case study included an NDEr who saw a light that wasn’t hurtful: “The light was of an intensity beyond description, yet it was gentle and did not hurt the eyes.”

Jeanie Dicus saw a light that would burn her eyes if she had eyes: “The White Light in front of me was sorta like a white light bulb only it was so strong. I remember thinking my eyes should be burning, but then I remembered that I didn’t have any eyes to burn.”

Angie Fenimore found herself in darkness after attempting suicide after which she saw a light brighter than the sun yet soothing: “Though far more brilliant that the sun, the light soothed my eyes with its deep and pure white luminescence. I sensed that the light could not (or perhaps would not – I wasn’t sure) cross the barrier into the darkness. And I knew with complete certainty that I was in the presence of God.”

An anonymous NDEr learned that souls emanating the brightest light in higher afterlife realms must hide their “glory” when visiting lower afterlife realms: “Those living on the higher realms of the city [of light] radiate the brightest light, being so resplendent that their glory must be cloaked so others of lower degree can look upon them. Visiting the higher levels is possible, but the spirits of lower realms must be prepared or covered so they can stand in the presence of greater glory.”

Dannion Brinkley saw a light brighter than any light, yet wasn’t blinding: “I was moving through a tunnel toward a brilliant light… The light was more intense than anything I had ever seen, yet it did not blind me.”

John Hernandez saw a light brighter than the sun, yet didn’t hurt: “The light — the fantastic light! It was brighter than the brightest light I had ever seen on Earth. It was brighter than the sun shining on a field of snow. Yet I could look at it, and it didn’t hurt my eyes.”

Elizabeth encountered an intensely bright light that didn’t hurt: “It was then that I noticed an incredible, brilliant, white light at the end of this line. I write ‘incredible’ because I notice the light being so intensely bright and dynamic, yet it did not hurt the eyes to look directly into it. Although I did not understand why, I found the light to be amazing, and it seemed to fill me with joy and warmth… The love and respect I had for this being was unlike anyone I had ever known.”

Wendy G. saw a light that was brighter than the sun but didn’t hurt: “There was a beautiful tunnel with a bright light at the end of it. The light was brighter than the sun but did not hurt my eyes. It was pure white light… I wanted to go into the light. I wanted to go home.”

Andrew Petro saw the light was like exploding suns, but didn’t hurt: “The radiant Light that looked like a thousand exploding suns overtook the blackness. My retinas should have been burned out by its brightness, but I could stare into the Light and it didn’t hurt.”

Pamela K. saw a light brighter than the sun, but didn’t hurt: “I mentally ‘turned’ around again and saw a Light that was brighter than a million suns but which didn’t hurt my vision. It radiated the most all-encompassing unconditional Love I’ve ever experienced.”

Tina W. saw a light brighter than the sun, but didn’t hurt: “Then I saw a light that was brighter than the sunlight as it encompassed me. I could stared at it directly without hurting my eyes.”

James T. saw a light like a sun, but didn’t hurt to look at: “It is the most absolute, pure light that never hurts to look at, probably because you’re not actually looking at it with physical eyes, even though the sensation is that of seeing, it’s simply a sight of the mind. It was like a sun.”

Arlene A. saw a light brighter than the sun, but didn’t hurt: “Once the haze had cleared the light was extremely bright and white but not hurtful to my eyes and definitely not the sun kind of light where it is or would be warm or scalding in this case.”

Gary G. saw a light like the sun, but didn’t hurt to look at: “There was a huge, sunlight OBJECT shining down on his (Jesus’) left side. But it didn’t hurt me to look at it.”

Edward C. saw a light brighter than the sun, yet can look at it: “The light was 10,000 times brighter than the sun, yet I could look straight at it. The light was literally made of LOVE.”

Jeri W. saw a light like the sun, but wasn’t painful: “Everything was very bright white or white-gold, like blazing sunshine right in your eyes and reflecting off everything, but not at all painful or unpleasant.”

Granit N. saw a light like the sun which can be looked at: “At the end of the tunnel was a large light, which looked like the sun, but this light I could look into.”

Leila D. saw a light brighter than the sun, but wasn’t blinding: “I did not walk into the light, yet it felt like I was being pulled into it; it was like being slowly sucked into the light. This light was so bright, yet it wasn’t blinding and it didn’t hurt my eyes. The light was soft and comfortable but brighter than looking at the sun.”

The Bible describes Jesus transfiguring like the sun into a Being of Light: “And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light” (Matthew 17:1-2).

7. Light That Feels Intelligent and Loving

NDErs often describe the light as not just bright or beautiful – it feels aware, intelligent, and deeply loving. Those who encounter it frequently sense that the light understands them completely and communicates with them without words. Many describe it as a living presence rather than a simple physical light. In these testimonies, the light is experienced as welcoming, wise, and filled with compassion. This light radiates acceptance, comfort, and a profound sense of peace. Some NDErs feel that the light knows everything about them and still loves them unconditionally. Because of these qualities, many NDErs come away believing that the light represents God’s presence or the very source of love itself. The following testimonies describe encounters with this intelligent and loving light.

NDE researcher Dr. T. Lee Baumann describes the light as intelligent and loving: “NDEs describe going to a light that is welcoming, intelligent, and loving. Strangest of all, however, is the similarity of all these descriptions of the nature, presence, and behavior of light to descriptions of God.”

Deborah Weiler encountered a vast, brilliant, golden globe of light – an intelligent, living Being of Light and Love.

Develous B. saw a light that was intelligent and loving: “And then a Light. Brighter than bright. Whiter than white. But it did not hurt my eyes. It was warm. It was alive. And it was love. Not the emotional kind. Not the conditional kind. But the original source of love. And it was intelligent.”

Mark W. saw a light that is super-intelligent and loving: “It was like going into the sun, but only to a light that is super-intelligent and all love.”

Maria P. saw a light that was intelligent and loving: “The light was intelligent, it was endless, and it was communicating with me. I felt perfection, Bliss, Love, Love, Love, and again, words cannot describe the extent of these feelings.”

Jean saw a light that was loving and intelligent: “The Presence in the Light was sweet, soft, warm, loving, supremely intelligent and totally good.”

Katalin F. saw a light that was intelligent and loving: “I couldn’t take my eyes of his beautiful face. He didn’t look like a person. He was a light, the light, this light is intelligent, loving, healing, nurturing, and safe and kind. The light is wise and very real.”

Brent S. saw a light that was loving and intelligent: “Some describe the light as being loving and intelligent. It was this light that He showed me.”

Karen saw a light that was intelligent and loving: “It (the light) was bright soothing and intelligent. It surrounded and permeated through me, conveying unspeakable love an acceptance.”

Barbara E. saw a light that was loving and intelligent: “As I settled into the love without condition, I realized more and more how utterly and absolutely intelligent light was. The sheer level of creativity and intellect was emotionally and psychologically beyond comprehension.”

Tom B. saw a light that was loving and intelligent: “The Light was the most beautiful experience of love and security… The Light’s multitude of vibrant colors all blended together in what seemed to be perfect harmony. Each of the colors seemed to be intelligent, as if they were alive and sending me a loving welcome.”

8. Light That the Soul Becomes One With

Instead of simply seeing the light, many NDErs describe becoming united with it. In these moments, the boundary between the self and the light seems to disappear. The NDEr feels absorbed into a presence of overwhelming love, knowledge, and unity. NDErs report this kind of experience often saying that it feels like returning to a deeper reality where everything is connected. They describe a sense of merging with the source of life itself, where the distinction between the individual soul and God fades away. In this state, many NDErs say they feel completely known, completely loved, and somehow part of a greater whole. The following testimonies describe this profound sense of becoming one with the light – a union that many NDErs say reveals the true nature of love, consciousness, and the deep interconnectedness of all life.

Christian Andreason learned the following from his NDE: “As we learn how to LOVE, we build the light of spirit within. A day will come (in a time not so far away) when all of our light(s) will have become so large that we will merge and go back to the Creator and be as ONE — just as we were in the beginning. Once we are ONE again, there will be a great celebration.”

Betty Eadie merged with the light and love of Jesus: “I felt his (Jesus’) light blending into mine, literally, and I felt my light being drawn to his. It was as if there were two lamps in a room, both shining, their light merging together. It’s hard to tell where one light ends and the other begins; they just become one light. Although his light was much brighter than my own, I was aware that my light, too, illuminated us. And as our lights merged, I felt as if I had stepped into his countenance, and I felt an utter explosion of love.”

One of Dr. Ken R. Vincent‘s NDE research subjects merged with the light of Jesus: “The light was in me and between the molecules, the cells in my body. He (Jesus) was in me – I was in him… I knew all things. I saw all things. I was all things. But not me; Jesus had this. As long as I was ‘in Him,’ and he was ‘in me,’ I had this power, this glory (for lack of a better word).”

Linda Stewart became one with God and perfect love: “There was no place that God did not exist and I was within God. I am an inseparable part of the light. The truth of who I am, indeed, who we all are, is perfect love as a creation of God. All of God’s creation is one creation and I am one with creation. God and I are one, Creator and created.”

Sandra Rogers was absorbed by the light: “I followed my angel guide into the light. The angel was absorbed by the light and so was I. While in the light I learned that everything in existence was created from the essence of God, the light… The light showed me that what is important is that we love God and each other, and that it isn’t what a person says, but the love in their being that is examined in the afterlife.”

Thomas Sawyer blended with God which is like becoming God: “Once you enter into the light and blend with God, you become God. God is light and light is love. You can’t take a knife and cut out a part of love and take it away. If you theoretically cut love in half and take it, there’s not half love here and half love there. Each part is wholly God.”

Randy Gehling merged with the light becoming everything: “When merging with the light during an NDE, it feels like your body explodes in a pleasant way into millions of different atoms that can think its own thoughts and have its own feelings. All at once you feel like a boy, a girl, a dog, a cat, a fish, then an old man, an old woman, and then a little tiny baby.”

Betty Malz was absorbed by the light of love: “I did not have to move. The light was all about me. There seemed to be some heat in it as if I were standing in sunlight; my body began to glow. Every part of me was absorbing the light. I felt bathed by the rays of a powerful, penetrating, loving energy.”

Christian Gnostics believed that initiation into the Christ “gnosis” is inseparable from “the true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” It is this light within, our Higher Self, which each individual must bring to at-onement with the divine Source if liberation from reincarnation is to occur.

Nanci Danison fully merged with the light: “First, my level of alertness did not change after it expanded dramatically once I was thoroughly infused with the Light. Second, my level of consciousness continued to evolve through higher and more expansive levels until I was about to fully merge into Source/God.”

Mary became one with the light: “It seemed like I became part of The Light and then the Light became part of me. We were one. I suddenly understood, without question, how interconnected we all are with each other, God and all life forms in the Universe.”

Jeffrey O. became one with the light of God: “Truth, knowledge, light and love flowed through me in a way that I was literally a part of it. I was in God and He was in me. We were ONE. I was at one with every soul. We were knit together as beautiful parts of the perfect whole.”

Barbara S. became a part of the light: “I also realized that I was still me but was part of this white light also. I belonged to it and it belonged to me. I was told that you are here to gain knowledge and to learn how to love.”

Nevie G. became the light: “I was aware of a light enveloping me. I was the light and it was me.”

Justin U. became one with a profound light: “I then started to get closer to the light again. It is beyond description. The love, acceptance and oneness of everything is so profound.”

9. Light Communicating Without Words

Some NDErs have described NDE telepathy in the light as hearing the thoughts of others as the other person’s voice speaking in the NDEr’s mind. Other NDErs have described it as “idea transfer” rather than “word transfer.” Other NDErs have described NDE telepathy as a “knowing” or an “awareness.” Other NDErs have described NDE telepathy as receiving entire “blocks of knowledge” or the equivalent of receiving all the knowledge of the universe in “chucks.” NDE telepathy also involves “images” where communication is exchanged not with words or ideas – but with images appearing in the mind’s eye. There is also evidence of souls in the NDE realm able to travel through a variety of afterlife realms by means of telepathic travel. This is because souls are not confined to any particular realm at any given time and can operate in more than one realm at the same time through telepathy.

a. Telepathic Communication in the Heavenly Realms

Sandra Rogers described telepathic communication in the spirit world: “Communication in the spiritual world is telepathic. Your thoughts are answered as rapidly as your mind can send and receive them. When you die, everything you have said, thought, or done will be known by all. There are no secrets in the afterlife. Spirits with evil thoughts avoid the light because they are too ashamed to have their thoughts revealed. Spirits with like thoughts are drawn to each other in the afterlife.”

Kimberly Clark-Sharp communicated with the light through nonverbal knowledge: “The Light gave me knowledge, though I heard no words. We did not communicate in English or in any other language. This was discourse clearer and easier than the clumsy medium of language. It was something like understanding math or music – nonverbal knowledge, but knowledge no less profound. I was learning the answers to the eternal questions of life – questions so old we laugh them off as clichés. Why are we here? ‘To learn.’ What’s the purpose of our life? ‘To love.'”

Jayne Smith described receiving “blocks of knowledge” telepathically while expanding in God’s light: “My consciousness began to expand with the bliss of it all. Suddenly there came into my field of consciousness an entire field of knowledge. It was like a whole block of knowledge that just simply came in and settled itself on me. I knew, what takes several sentences to tell, but it didn’t come in several sentences – it came all in one piece. What I knew was that I was immortal, that I was eternal, that I was indestructible, that I always had been, that I always will be, and that there was no way in this world I could ever be lost… When that block of knowledge was digested by me, as it were, another block of knowledge came in.”

Dannion Brinkley communicated with the Being of Light through telepathy: “I gazed at the Being of Light… ‘Who you are is the difference that God makes,’ said the Being. ‘And that difference is love.’ There were no actual words spoken, but this thought was communicated to me through some form of telepathy.”

Dr. Raymond Moody‘s “core” NDE considers the telepathic aspect of the experience as being recurring enough to warrant a place in his model NDE; he writes: “Soon other things begin to happen. Others come to meet and help him. He glimpses the spirits of relatives and friends who have already died, and a loving, warm spirit of a kind he never encountered before – a Being of Light – appears before him. This being asks him a question, nonverbally.” (Moody, Life After Life, p. 19.) Moody wrote how “hearing” in the spiritual state can apparently be called so only by analogy, and most say they do not really hear physical voices or sounds. Rather, they seem to pick up the thoughts of persons around them (Moody, Life After Life, p. 46.) One of Moody’s experiencers described NDE telepathy, “While I was dead, in this Void, I talked to people – and yet, I really couldn’t say that I talked to any bodily people. Yet, I had the feeling that there were people around me, and I could feel their presence, and could feel them moving, though I could never see anyone. Every now and then, I would talk with one of them. but I couldn’t see them. And whenever I wondered what was going on, I would always get a thought back from one of them” (Moody, Life After Life, p. 52.)

Dr. Kenneth Ring refers to the Being of Light as a cosmic shaman who telepathically gives all knowledge to the NDEr: “While in this realm, the NDEr will receive instantaneously and telepathically the answers to all of his questions from this Being [of Light], this cosmic shaman. Knowledge will simply flood into his soul as the mysteries of life and death are finally and fully illuminated.”

Dr. Pim van Lommel writes in his seminal book Consciousness Beyond Life: “Many people report direct communication with this Being [of Light], as if it reads their mind and responds to the mind.”

Laura M. communicated with the light through telepathy: “He (Being of Light) spoke to me without words, without a voice, and yet I had clearly heard and understood every unspoken word! He said to me that I was in a different ‘place,’ one in which communication was purely exchanged through the LANGUAGE OF LOVE.”

Natacha P. asked the Being of Light who it was. She experienced the Being as full of love with an overwhelming understanding. She knew that the Being knew everything about her. It responded telepathically: “I will be what you want me to be.” Natacha realized that the Being could not appear in its true form and full goodness, but offered her the choice of what form it would take.

Sheila E.P. communicated with the Being of Light telepathically: Sheila described encountering a mystical, otherworldly presence that communicated telepathically. This loving Being of Light gently guided her through key life decisions and was, to her, a clear manifestation of God.

Sue Ann telepathically communicated with the Beings of Light, instinctively asking soul-level questions about her life’s hardships. One Being explained that all her experiences stemmed from choices she had made and assured her that one day she would rejoice in them – though her time had not yet come.

Wayne H. experienced an instant sharing of knowledge: “I sensed a presence behind me and then had a communication. This was beyond telepathy. This was not hearing words in my mind and translating them into thoughts, this was knowing as the other presence knew, an instant sharing of knowledge.”

b. Telepathic Communication in the Hellish Realms

George Ritchie described the telepathic communication in the hellish realms: “There were two other things distinctly unique about the beings of this realm. Since hypocrisy is impossible because others know your thoughts the minute you think them, they tend to group with the ones who think the same way they do. In our own realm of the existence, Earth, we have a saying, ‘Birds of a feather flock together.’ The main reason that they stick together is because it is too threatening to be with beings with whom you disagree when they know it.”

The Being of Light revealed to George Ritchie a hell realm where people where battling each other over their hateful telepathic thoughts which they hurled at one another: “At first I thought we were looking at some great battlefield. Everywhere spirits were locked in what looked like fights to the death, writhing, punching, gouging. No weapons of any sort, I saw as I looked closer, only bare hands and feet and teeth. And then I noticed that no one was apparently being injured… If I suspected that I was seeing hell, now I was sure of it. These creatures seemed locked into habits of mind and emotion, into hatred, lust, destructive thought-patterns… It was impossible to tell if the howls of frustration which reached us were actual sounds or only the transference of despairing thoughts. Indeed in this disembodied world it didn’t seem to matter. Whatever anyone thought, however fleetingly or unwillingly, was instantly apparent to all around him, more completely than words could have expressed it, faster than sound waves could have carried it. And the thoughts most frequently communicated had to do with the superior knowledge, or abilities, or background of the thinker. ‘I told you so!’ ‘I always knew!’ ‘Didn’t I warn you!’ were shrieked into the echoing air over and over.”

Howard Storm was rescued from hell by Jesus after Storm repeated a little Sunday School song in his head. Apparently, Jesus heard Storm’s cry for help telepathically and responded. Howard Storm wrote: “The agony that I had suffered during the day was nothing compared to what I was feeling now. I knew then that this was the absolute end of my existence, and it was more horrible than anything I could possibly have imagined. Then a most unusual thing happened. I heard very clearly, once again in my own voice, something that I had learned in nursery Sunday School. It was the little song, ‘Jesus loves me, yes I know…’ and it kept repeating. I don’t know why, but all of a sudden I wanted to believe that. Not having anything left, I wanted to cling to that thought. And I, inside, screamed, ‘Jesus, please save me.’ That thought was screamed with every ounce of strength and feeling left in me. When I did that, I saw, off in the darkness somewhere, the tiniest little star. Not knowing what it was, I presumed it must be a comet or a meteor, because it was moving rapidly. Then I realized it was coming toward me. It was getting very bright, rapidly. When the light came near, its radiance spilled over me, and I just rose up – not with my effort – I just lifted up. Then I saw – and I saw this very plainly – I saw all my wounds, all my tears, all my brokenness, melt away. And I became whole in this radiance. What I did was to cry uncontrollably. I was crying, not out of sadness, but because I was feeling things that I had never felt before in my life. Another thing happened. Suddenly I knew a whole bunch of things. I knew things… I knew that this light, this radiance, knew me. I don’t know how to explain to you that I knew it knew me, I just did. As a matter of fact, I understood that it knew me better than my mother or father did. The luminous entity that embraced me knew me intimately and began to communicate a tremendous sense of knowledge. I knew that he knew everything about me and I was being unconditionally loved and accepted.”

10. Light as a Presence Rather Than an Object

For many experiencers, the light is not merely a spiritual guide or benevolent force – it is recognized as the very presence of God. Reports from NDErs across cultures and belief systems consistently describe this light as the embodiment of unconditional love, divine wisdom, and a presence so overwhelming in compassion that human language falls short of capturing its essence.

Mellen-Thomas Benedict saw the light as a presence: “I understood that the Light was not a thing, but a presence… It was pure love, pure awareness.”

Anita Moorjani saw the light as a living presence: “I was surrounded by an incredible light, and I felt completely loved and accepted… The light was almost like a living presence.”

Dr. Eben Alexander saw the light as a living presence: “There was a brilliant light… It was not just light, but a living presence, infinitely loving and compassionate.”

NDE researcher Nora Spurgin says that in the light is the presence of God who cannot be denied: “Everyone in the realms of light knows that there is a Creator. It is said that this presence is so obvious it cannot be denied.”

Kimberly Clark-Sharp saw the light as a divine presence: “Though I had never seen God, I recognized this light as the Light of God. But even the word God seemed too small to describe the magnificence of that presence. I was with my Creator, in holy communication with that presence. The Light was directed at me and through me; it surrounded me and pierced me. It existed just for me.”

Josiane Antonette saw the light as an omnipresent presence: “I am melting into the universe. I am everywhere at once. I see pulsing light everywhere. Such a loving presence envelops me!”

Beverly Brodsky experienced the light as a living presence without form: “There, before me, was the living presence of the light. Within it I sensed an all-pervading intelligence, wisdom, compassion, love, and truth. There was neither form nor sex to this perfect being.”

Don Morse saw the light as a loving presence: “I first saw pitch darkness and then an incredibly bright, white light. It enveloped me so that I could see nothing but this light. I was not afraid. I felt secure, warm, and serene. No one came to greet me but I felt a loving presence around me.”

Suzy B. experienced a formless presence in the light: “Then I was inside the light and I became part of the light. I neither felt, nor saw any physical form, but remained in my individual consciousness. A formless presence from inside the light told me without words that I needed to live.”

Yazmine S. expanded while nearing the Great Presence of Light: “I feel that my awareness was omnipresent during the goldenness, expanding vastly as I neared The Great Presence of Light. I was aware of all that is, was, and ever shall be.”

Tyler G. felt the Presence of the light of God: “I looked again toward the Light. It wasn’t just brightness. It was Intelligence. It was Compassion. It was Eternity. I didn’t see a being, but I felt its Presence. It was so loving and so vast in understanding that every word we use for God suddenly felt small and insufficient.”

Matthew Mc. felt a loving presence from the light: “A cylinder of light appeared above me and to my right. I felt this loving presence coming from the light.”

Michelle J. felt a loving presence from the light: “Then I noticed there was a presence there with me that was so familiar. I had known this presence forever – or so it seemed. The presence knew me. The light could have consumed me, but no harm came to me. There was pure love in the light. I was at peace and my mind was totally opened in receiving whatever the presence in the light had to give. I totally trusted the presence (God) because I had remembered the light, for some reason. It was awesome!”

William C. felt a loving presence from the light: “While in the presence of the light, I could understand everything and I wanted nothing… While in the presence of the light I was in the presence of absolute truth.”

Linda G. described meeting a divine presence she recognized as God – an intensely radiant light, more brilliant than anything she’d seen. Though overwhelming, it felt familiar. She realized she’d encountered this Being [of Light] before, once appearing in a more human-like, eight-foot-tall form made entirely of love and light, yet without distinct features.

Seth Cowan felt the presence of God from the light: “I saw nothing but white light and felt the presence of God.”

Mary experienced the light as a presence: “Words can’t describe my awe in this presence. It seemed like I became part of The Light and then the Light became part of me. We were one.”

Carmel Bell saw the light as a living presence: “There was a very large living Light presence. I knew that this was GOD or SOURCE and that this is why it is called the LIGHT.”

11. Light Perceived as “Home”

Many NDErs describe encountering the radiant light as being deeply familiar. The light often gives them the powerful sense that they have returned to where they truly belong. In these moments, NDErs frequently report feeling so complete that they describe the experience as coming home after a long journey. Again and again, NDErs say that being in the presence of this light brings a profound recognition. It feels timeless, comforting, and intimately known, as if it were the soul’s original home. The following testimonies describe this striking perception of the light as “home,” a place of unconditional love, belonging, and ultimate peace.

Linda Stewart experienced the light of God as home: “I was home and I wanted nothing more than to remain in the light of God. Christ had delivered me into the light and I stood in the presence of God. I was filled with complete knowing: The light was love and love was God.”

Laurelynn Martin experienced the light as home: “As I admired the beauty of the light, I was drawn closer, feeling the radiant warmth, infinite love and lasting peace. I felt as if I were home in the light.”

Grace Bubulka-Hatmaker experienced the light as home: “I was part of the light. The light was part of me, but the light was more… I felt as if I had returned to something I knew before. It was as if I had come home. I had come home to the beginning of not just me but the beginning of all eternity.”

Helen experienced the light as home: “I traveled very slowly along a tunnel toward a bright light, and I could feel an overwhelming sense of warmth and peace and whiteness… I felt okay, as though this was where I was meant to be, as if I had arrived home, and I was at ease with myself for the first time in a long time.”

Dr. Karl Jansen‘s research subject experienced the light as home: “I saw light and warmth. This is Home. So familiar, where we belong. Where we go. Everything is perfect, no words, just basic feeling. Love, Reality, Home. This was about the only words that I could bring back.”

Joyce G. felt the Light of Love as home: “[ I felt and absolute release into the Light of Love! Home, as I now realize it! Incredible Love!”

Donna entered the light like going home: “[ I ] headed up in a light cloud. It felt so perfect. I felt like I was going home and I felt comfortable and joyous with no doubts at all.”

Stella experienced the light as home: “Then I was home. The light surrounded me and I was in eternity, every question I asked had an instant clear response, even if I didn’t understand every answer.”

Cara A. experienced the light as home: “I was enveloped in the Light. I felt unconditional love, peace and joy to an extent that can never be felt or experienced here. I was one with the Light. I was whole. I was home.”

Michael G. experienced the light as home: “I was Home in the Unconditional Loving White Light, that renewed my spirit.”

Tonja BB experienced the light as home: “The light was so very bright but did not cause me discomfort. Matter of fact, it was comforting. I was warm and happy and felt so much love. So much love! I was finally home.”

Shirley R. experienced the light as home: “Standing at the light, that is not really a light like we know on Earth, I felt I finally was home after a long, long journey… I still cry to go home into the light, I do not want to be here on Earth anymore, but know that I have no choice not even suicide.”

Tyler G. experienced the light as home: “A radiant white light pulsed like the heartbeat of the universe. And somehow, I knew that light was Home.”

12. Light Containing Knowledge

Encounters with the radiant light during NDEs are often described as overwhelming revelations of absolute knowledge. NDErs consistently report that the light communicates answers instantaneously – before questions are fully formed – and that its wisdom encompasses everything from the origins of the cosmos to the intimate details of one’s own life. Many describe this light as a presence in which all truth is interconnected, where understanding unfolds effortlessly and comprehensively, as if the very fabric of reality were being revealed. Other NDErs describe the light as containing the knowledge of all worlds, all beings, and all purposes, conveying that nothing in creation is random and that everything has meaning. Some encounter this light as an orb of love and an intelligence that knows them completely, while others interpret it as the cosmic embodiment of wisdom itself. The following testimonies illustrate how NDEs portray the light as the ultimate source of knowledge – a universal, omniscient consciousness that both surrounds and permeates the soul.

Betty Eadie described the light as knowledge: “His (Jesus’) light now began to fill my mind, and my questions were answered even before I fully asked them. His light was knowledge. It had power to fill me with all truth. As I gained confidence and let the light flow into me, my questions came faster than I thought possible, and they were just as quickly answered… Spiritually, we are at various degrees of light – which is knowledge – and because of our divine, spiritual nature we are filled with the desire to do good.”

Dr. Dianne Morrissey learned that within God’s light is all knowledge beyond comprehension: “Within the Light of God, we realize that everyone and everything is connected to God… Within the Light was the cure for all diseases; within the Light was all the knowledge of every planet, every galaxy, every universe. Indeed, the Light was Wisdom and Love beyond all comprehension.”

Thomas Sawyer experienced the light as having total knowledge: “The light emanated to me (without words): ‘Before you is the light. You have the opportunity to ask any series of questions. Any question that you can conceive of will be absolutely, unequivocally answered…’ In other words, as I thought of and formulated a desire or a question, it would already have been recognized, acknowledged, and therefore answered. And the dialogue that took place, took place in no time. It didn’t require a fifteen-minute duration in time; it simply happened.”

Tiffany Snow received knowledge like an empty library suddenly being filled: “Then he (Being of Light) gave me answers to thousands of questions that I never had questions for! Reams of information seemed to be exploding in my brain, like an empty library suddenly being realized! Details flooded my being about many wonderful and sacred things. I wondered: were these things newly learned, or just remembered?”

RaNelle Wallace was overwhelmed from receiving “floodgates” of knowledge: “Floodgates of knowledge opened, and truth poured into me without end or constraint. Its source was the light and truth all around me, and it was clarified, or explained at my level, by my grandmother. She gave me knowledge about God, life, the creation of the world, and even the reaches of eternity. The truths were comprehensive and complete and rushed upon me in such enormous volume that I thought my head would explode. It was coming too fast. I wanted to be able to absorb it, to remember it all, but it was too much.”

Ned Dougherty absorbed universal knowledge from the light: “God began to imbue me with universal knowledge. I realized that I had always thirsted for this knowledge and I wanted to absorb as much as I could. As I remained suspended in God’s light, I felt this knowledge penetrate and absorbed by my spiritual being. This knowledge was flowing through me in the same manner as God’s love, pulsating through my being.”

During Sylvia Browne‘s NDE, she experienced infinite knowledge in the light: “The legendary white light appeared ahead of me, with sacred brilliance and infinite knowledge.”

According to the Dalai Lama, in Tibetan Buddhism the light is associated with wisdom and knowledge. The concept of light is one of the key images one experiences in an NDE. The Dalai Lama described the metaphor of light as: “a common image in all the major religious traditions. In the Buddhist context, light is particularly associated with wisdom and knowledge; darkness is associated with ignorance and a state of misknowledge.” (1999, p. 304)

David B. expanded in the light with profound knowledge: “I remember feeling like I was expanding… I remember a wave of understanding and the sensation of the most exquisite joy imaginable. I remember that I understood everything. I remember rejoicing in that knowledge and feeling joy, happiness, and warmth.”

Judy G. experienced the light as knowledge: “The knowledge was instantaneous and fuller. I was aware that if I went ‘through’ the light, that I would have even more knowledge.”

Barbara S. was told by the light that humans are on Earth to learn about love and gain knowledge: “The light then told me, ‘You are here to learn how to love and to gain knowledge.’ When I was told this, all the implications of the word love and knowledge were imparted to me. With the word ‘love‘, it wasn’t just about physical love but the love of nature, accepting all people as the same, everything that pertained to love. The same was with knowledge. It wasn’t just about book knowledge but about learning about different cultures, histories of the world. I felt when I was told this that it wasn’t just my reason for being on Earth but all of our reason for being here: mankind.”

In the light, Elle D. downloaded all the answers to everything: “The experience at the end, in the clear light, was an enlightenment, whereby, I understood everything about reality, the universe, life, as if all of the answers were downloaded so I experienced completeness.”

Edward C. had a download of information from the light leading to total knowledge: “I also had a download of information so there was nothing for me to ask the Light/GOD because I was all-knowing.”

Bryan D. instantly downloaded knowledge from the Being of Light: “Things that I thought I had learned, I was corrected on. Paragraphs of questions emanated from me, and as fast as I could ask, I was being answered or even downloaded the answers. I’m pretty sure that this was the whole ‘life flashing before your eyes’ moment that others have spoken of during these occasions.”

14. Conclusion

These NDE testimonies and interpretations suggest that the light in NDEs is far more than a visual phenomenon. Again and again, NDErs describe the light as living, intelligent, loving, and deeply personal. The light is seen as God, Jesus Christ, the Source, the Being of Light, the Higher Self, a divine Presence, ultimate Reality, or simply “Home“. Though NDErs interpret their NDE through different religious and cultural lenses, the central features remain remarkably consistent: the light radiates unconditional love, communicates knowledge without words, draws the soul like a magnet with irresistible attraction, and reveals a profound unity connecting all life.

The NDE testimonies presented in this article show that the light is not merely something seen, but something encountered. It is experienced as a presence that knows the soul completely, accepts it fully, and often transforms it permanently. Whether described as brilliant white, golden, brighter than the sun, or beyond all earthly comparison, the light consistently carries the same deeper meaning: love, truth, wisdom, and belonging. For many NDErs, it is the clearest revelation that consciousness survives death and that the foundation of reality is a loving intelligence.

In this way, the light stands at the heart of the NDE. The light appears across cultures, religions, and centuries as a universal symbol and lived reality of God. However the NDEr explains it, the light remains one of the most powerful and enduring elements of NDE testimony, pointing to a reality in which love is ultimate, knowledge is immediate, and the soul is drawn toward a divine home it somehow has always known.
