1. Introduction to Soul Merge and the NDE
Near-death experiences (NDEs) often describe “soul merge” as a direct shift in personal identity: the sense of a separate “me” falls away, and what remains is an expanded consciousness experienced as limitless, loving, and inseparable from a greater Whole. In these NDEs, ego is portrayed as a temporary, brain-linked construct which is useful for earthly life, yet unable to survive the moment consciousness loosens from the body. As that construct dissolves, NDErs describe merging with God or universal consciousness, sometimes like a drop returning to an infinite ocean.
This article explores soul merge as “ego loss” and the profound paradox it reveals: unity can feel absolute – yet it can also be consciously chosen, resisted, or only partially surrendered. The NDEs that follow describe consciousness expanding beyond personal boundaries into a collective mind, and into a network of shared light, and into an all-encompassing oneness, while also acknowledging how ego can reject what the soul recognizes as true. Strikingly, the same concept appears in Eastern spiritual teachings, where death is described as the collapse of the illusion of separateness and the recognition of a unity that was never absent. Together, these perspectives describe soul merge as one of the most transformative dimensions of the NDE. It is described as the end of the illusion of separation.
Many of the NDE testimonies referenced in this article are drawn from firsthand accounts generously shared on the Near-Death Experience Research Foundation (NDERF.org) website. I gratefully acknowledge NDERF and its founders, Dr. Jeffrey Long and Jody Long, for their decades of dedication to collecting, preserving, and publishing the world’s most comprehensive archives of NDE testimonies.
2. Soul Merge As Ego Loss
NDErs often describe a profound transformation in identity involving ego loss – the disappearance of the personal “I”. What remains is described as a deeper level of consciousness that feels limitless, loving, and fundamentally unified with a greater Whole. Ego is portrayed as a temporary construct tied to the brain and its experiences. When physical consciousness ceases, this ego construct falls away, allowing awareness to expand and merge into what is perceived as God or collective consciousness. Some NDErs describe this as returning to an original state of oneness. Others emphasize seeing reality from an all-encompassing awareness. This concept of ego loss closely parallels teachings found in Eastern spiritual traditions which describe death as the loss of the illusion of separateness rather than the end of existence. In both NDEs and these traditions, ego loss is understood as a recognition that individuality was never truly separate from the whole. The testimonies that follow explore this recurring pattern of ego loss, soul merge, and awakening to oneness, offering insight into one of the most transformative aspects of the NDE.
Terence M. learned that ego merges with God after death: “It is now obvious to me after the NDE that the ‘ego’ is dependent totally on brain function programmed by life’s experiences. The instant the brain shuts down the ‘Awareness’ that underpins and experiences the ‘I’ of the ego, is free to merge back into Universal Consciousness, that is Divine Love beyond any earthly understanding.”
Nancy Clark experienced ego-loss in merging with God: “I’ll try to describe my tentative understanding of the unitive experience. The main and defining feature appears to be the loss of ego, or the loss of self during union with God. The self is now nonexistent and only God and God’s perspective remain. I had tried to conceptualize this as the self being like a drop of water and God being like an (infinite) Ocean. I was surprised to read that that’s wrong. It is not blending into the ocean , the cosmos, everyone on the planet but merging into and seeing from God’s vision or understanding.”
Scott S. learned that everyone is connected, but ego rejects this: “I was shown that reality is paradoxical: we are all one, yet we are all also separate. Everything is connected yet lacks union due to acceptance and awareness, which is not real… We are all one power of ‘soul,’ yet we lack the ability to accept this due to the ego.”
Chantal L. realized she merged with a collective consciousness with other Beings of Light: Chantal no longer experienced a sense of being a separate self. Instead, there was a profound awareness of being part of a vast collective consciousness. It felt as though billions upon billions of beings were interconnected, united as a single whole. The sense of oneness in that other realm was described as astonishing and deeply moving.
Stephen K. learned he once merged with the oneness: “I knew that I was once part of the oneness and was separated from it. I knew that I had free will and would one day choose to return to it.”
William H. merged with the light of all beings like a drop in the ocean: “When all the individual spheres of aware light periodically come into contact at the same time, every individual awareness, that ever has or ever will exist, is spontaneously and immediately At-One with the One… Its effect is the complete and overwhelming experience of every drop of awareness in the ocean suddenly merging into the single sea of awareness.”
Justin U. knew he would disappear if he merged with the light: “I was ready to start to merge with the love and light, but not fully and seemed to for a while (though time does not exist as we experience it there) the feeling of oneness and love and bliss and knowing is profound. I knew if I merged totally ‘I’ would disappear would become one with it and all.”
Eastern religions teach that death means ego loss and becoming aware of your oneness with everything: “In Eastern religions, it is not the body that dies, but the illusion of the body. Death is an experience of ego loss. One loses the sense of separation between one’s finite self and the larger universe. In Eastern terms, this separation is illusory and death is a disillusioning experience. It is a moment of truth. You become aware of your oneness with all existence, a oneness that has always been there.”
3. Soul Merge and Retaining Individuality
NDEs challenge the assumption that soul merging with the light requires the disappearance of personal individuality. Yet NDE testimonies repeatedly present a more nuanced picture – one in which Wholeness and individuality coexist rather than cancel each other out. This merging is often portrayed as total oneness – becoming part of everything that exists – yet without the loss of personal awareness. NDErs describe being distinctly themselves, often with a heightened sense of identity. The following NDEs describe how souls can merge with the light while still retaining individuality.
Barbara S. merged with the Being of Light yet retained her individuality: Barbara described an encounter with a Being of Light in whom she felt complete trust and love. Barbara was shown the purpose of her life on Earth and what her existence was truly about. She felt as though she had merged with the light, becoming one with it while still retaining her own sense of individuality.
Gerry L. merged with the Being of Light while retaining individuality: “I was transported by the Living Light to merge with some kind of Being that was like an eternal and infinite ocean in which all beings and things existed within. I was the Being and I was Me and I was Everything and Everything was Me — all Individual and all the Same instantaneously.”
Peter N. “exploded” while merging with the light yet retained individuality: “On first finding myself ‘inside the light’ is that I ‘exploded’ in size to unbelievable magnitude and that, in terms of having an identifiable ‘form’ I just completely disappeared. Literally, I became one with what that light was. Strange though it may sound, it was as if I in some way became the light. I was completely merged with it… We were merged so that there was no separation – and yet I also knew that I existed, as did it, as a discrete entity.”
Harold R. experienced oneness with God and other souls without losing individuality: “I was aware of a oneness, a connection with God and all the other souls but also individuality.”
Joan LH became one with everything and didn’t lose individuality: “I had a very strong sense of being part of everything. We are all one. I did not lose my individuality and yet I was part of something tremendously more than just me. I could still feel ‘me’, within the LOVING that we are all part of. This part is very hard to describe.”
Andy J. became one with everything yet still an individual: “I felt as if I was the universe. As if I was connected to everything but still able to observe from a single point.”
Alan McDougall learned that ultimately everyone will merge with God while retaining their uniqueness: “In the end we will all merge with all things, restore harmony to creative existence. We would then still be ourselves but also have access to the infinite knowledge power and presence of the creator God as we finally withdraw once again into ourselves… It was as if I were God and knew everything he knew, somehow we seemed to have merged into one being and one reality.”
Michael Joseph learned that everyone is connected yet separate: “I EXPERIENCED that universal connection. We are both part of a great supernatural ‘internet’ and yet simultaneously separate PCs as well (to use an analogy).”
Vincent H. saw that families in heaven merge with God, but keep their individuality: “Each family [of souls] keeps its identity, and while enjoying divine power. It accedes to the creation of all kinds of life and every material aspect. The absoluteness of its knowledge and their cohesion, allow it to merge with the All, while keeping its singularity, its meaning with God, beyond the quantum and beyond the infinitesimal.”
Kevin Williams concludes that merging with the Being of Light does not include losing your identity as a Higher Self: “Many NDErs view the Being of Light as a presence described not only as loving and intelligent but as the very embodiment of unity and oneness. They report a transformative merging with this Light, wherein the boundaries of self dissolve into an overwhelming sense of interconnectedness with all that exists. Rather than losing their identity, NDErs often describe a paradoxical state of merging with the Light while retaining a deep awareness of their true self – now recognized as part of something infinitely greater. This sense of oneness – experienced as infinite love, profound peace, and universal connection – reshapes how survivors view life, death, and the nature of existence itself. Their accounts serve not only as testimony to what may lie beyond, but as a reminder of the unity that underlies all life here and now.”
Kevin Williams describes human individuality existing within the Wholeness of God: A good analogy of how our spirit can exist both a part of God and yet the Whole of God is to think of our spirit as a “thought” in the Mind of God. The “thought” leaves the Mind of God to experience individuality as a human being. As a human being, our spirit is an individualized “thought” in the Mind of God but also retains its one-ness as the Whole Mind of God. When our human life is over, our “thought” returns to the Wholeness and merges into it where all the other thoughts are. The question however is this: When the thought returns to the Mind of God does it lose its individuality once it merges back into the Mind? According to Edgar Cayce, the answer is “no.” The reason thoughts began leaving the Mind of God to begin with was to learn individuality while maintaining Wholeness at the same time. Otherwise, thoughts would remain as a thought in the Mind and forever by controlled by the Mind and never know individuality.
4. Soul Merge With the Spirit
NDEs reveal that human identity is not limited to the personality formed on Earth, but participates in a deeper spiritual continuum. NDEs often describe this continuum as a merger of a person’s soul with their spirit – a remembering and reintegration of one’s higher nature (spirit) culminating in an experience of profound unity with God. The following information explores this concept of soul–spirit merger as revealed through NDE insights, metaphysical interpretation, and religious symbolism. It presents a view of human beings as multidimensional, participating simultaneously in earthly life and spiritual reality. Together, these ideas suggest that the destiny of the soul is conscious at-one-ment with the divine spirit from which it arose.
Arthur Yensen learned our spirit is in perfect oneness with God: “We are an individualized portion of God (i.e., spirit) who has attained a perfect oneness with God – which is also our goal.”
Kevin Williams explains the soul and spirit merger after death: “After each Earth experience and life review, your soul enters the particular afterlife realm which you have earned. The NDE literature reveals how in the afterlife realm, your soul meets and merges with your “spirit body” — your “Higher Self.” In the spirit realms, your spirit can also merge with God, remember your true origins, remember your true spiritual nature, realize your souls’ shortcomings, and live forever with the spirits of all your loved ones you have known for all eternity. So your spirit actually never leaves the spirit realms. Even while you live on Earth, your spirit within you exists in the spirit dimension. Humans are multidimensional beings living in multidimensional realms. Every time you reincarnate (if that is your choice), a particular aspect of your greater personality (your spirit) incarnates as a new soul. Depending upon which level in the spirit realms you have earned, you realize how close you are to complete “at-onement” with God and what is needed to attain the highest spirit heaven. You can choose soul growth without the need to reincarnate in lower realms, but there are great advantages in reincarnating into Earth’s “School of Hard Knocks.”
The Book of Revelation describes a future event where human consciousness merges with spirit on Earth: A literal interpretation of Chapter 21 of the Book of Revelation shows the “first heaven” and the “first Earth” is replaced with a new heaven and new Earth. Then God comes to dwell with humanity in the “New Jerusalem” where there is no more suffering or death. According to Edgar Cayce, the symbolic interpretation is as follows: Cayce interpreted the “new heaven and new Earth” that John saw as a metaphor of humanity’s perfected state of consciousness and regenerated body. Humanity at this point is now one with God in the perfection of control and is free from outside limitations. The human soul merges with the Spirit. The “New Jerusalem” is the spirit awakened in oneness with divinity. The “Temple of God” is the human being with the Christ consciousness. These verses also imply hell itself will be judged and cast into the “Lake of Fire” for purification (verses 6-8). They also indicate there is not just one heaven, for it states the “first heaven” would pass away and the “holy city” would come down out of heaven (presumably from another heavenly realm). Note that the Bible mentions three heavens. In the New Testament Apocrypha (the Apocalypse of Paul), it not only mentions a total of ten heavens, it mentions a soul being punished by having to reincarnate to Earth.

5. Soul Merge As Love and Bliss
NDErs often describe soul merging as an experience of love and bliss. They describe entering a Light that is love itself – a love so overwhelming that it dissolves separation. This merging is often experienced as a return to oneness: a remembering of an original state in which love is the very substance of existence. In these NDEs, merging with the Light is described as becoming one with a boundless field of love. Many NDErs describe this state as pure bliss and perfection – an effortless knowing that everything is connected, everything is meaningful, and everything is held together by love. The experience is frequently said to be beyond language. It reveals an enduring certainty that love is the fundamental reality behind all creation.
Anna E. described merging with God as pure loving bliss: “The Light is the eternal Love of God, pure loving bliss. It is what we call Oneness or Source. We actually never left it. We are the Light of God. We are pure Love.”
Anne L. merged with pure love and bliss: “[I experienced] pure love and a sense of bliss and oneness.”
Christian Andreason learned that love leads to merging more with the light of our spirit and God: “I saw that we were indeed made in the image of God, which is an essence taken from the Creator’s own LIGHT. It is because of this Light that we can never die. Every single child of God carries this Light within their Soul, and we call this Light, Spirit. As we learn how to LOVE, we build the Light of Spirit within. A day will come (in a time not so far away) when all of our Light(s) will have become so large that we will merge and go back to the Creator and be as ONE — just as we were in the beginning. Once we are ONE again, there will be a great celebration. And after a certain amount of time has passed, yet again, there will be another great explosion, only this time it will be much bigger and the process of Creation will be far more advanced.”
Nannci R. merged with the light and love of God: “The light was not just a light it was the power of love. It washed over me so strongly… I was overcome with love, the purity, an innocence and a sense of perfection or holiness simultaneously. To describe the actual merging of this is just not humanly possible, it happened so quickly but yet I could feel the bad wash away and the goodness enter and I knew this was how I was meant to be.”
NDE researcher Jody Long describes merging with God: “When we reconnect with God, we all merge into one collective consciousness whose communication and knowledge base is love.”
Tara S. learned that love is the oneness that merges everything together: “Love was the most powerful, permeating feeling. I feel that I learned that love is everything; the oneness that binds us all together. If you have this then you are very thankful, whole, and living in gratitude with peace. God is in every one of us as love.”
Anne W. learned that at birth we lose our merged oneness with who we really are: “As the messages were downloading within me, I would ‘get it’ and deeper wisdom would continue to unfold. I then realized our separation is at birth when we are born into the human condition and develop a human mind, where we lose our ‘awareness’ of the Truth, our oneness and unconditional love self that we really are.”
Ken M. became part of a loving merger with oneness: “I have become aware from this experience that I am part of a great oneness that is unexplainable but lovely.”
Robyn learned that all is merged as one in love: “All is connected, all is ONE and all is LOVE.”
Corey L. learned that everything is merged as one and loved: “I felt that everything is connected and loved. I felt one with all around me.”
Nicole BD merged with the oneness with everything in love: “I was everything and everything was me and it all was pure love. EVERYTHING WAS ONE = LOVE.”
Linda S. experienced a total sense of love for everything as a merger with interconnected oneness: “I was overwhelmed with the knowledge that WE ARE ALL ONE. I comprehended that our oneness is interconnected by love and is an available, much higher level and means of communication than we normally use but to which we have access… I remembered the love I had felt in the presence of God and experienced a total sense of love for all existence as an interconnected oneness and a manifestation of God.”
Mike I Jr. felt love as a merging with oneness: “I felt LOVE… incredible perfect love, as if everything was just perfect, in order and so peaceful. I had a knowledge or oneness with everything it seemed. Everything was connected, a oneness I had never known.”
Celso merged with oneness as a state of love: “Experiencing Oneness puts us into a state of love. After all, when we love something or someone like a person, a pet, or a flower, we feel at one with it. It’s like our hearts expand and take the thing we love into it.”
Nancy T. merged with the oneness of love: “The love emanating form this female presence and the peacefulness I felt made me greatly aware of the ONENESS of LOVE.”
Sara J. merged with the light as oneness with pure love: “The light/oneness was pure love without an object.”

6. Soul Merge In Afterlife Realms
NDEs repeatedly describe an experience of profound oneness – a gradual or sudden dissolving of personal boundaries into a greater Whole. This soul merge occurs in various afterlife realms: within the tunnel of light, within the Void, during the life review, and within higher spiritual realms. NDErs report an expansion of consciousness in which separation disappears, replaced by overwhelming love and oneness. They describe merging with a Being of Light, becoming one with unconditional love, or experiencing the thoughts and feelings of others as one’s own. These NDEs explore how soul merge manifests differently depending on the realm encountered. They suggest that the afterlife is a progressive movement toward oneness, where love functions as both the medium and the unifying force of existence itself.
Soul Merge in the Tunnel
Sam K. merged with oneness while in the tunnel: “I felt a release and experienced an expansion out into a tunnel of lightning. The tunnel was moving at vortex-like speed through a spaceless state of oneness. It was like being a droplet in an experience beyond words, and all happening at once.”
Kyal L. merged with oneness while in the tunnel: “The light tunnel pulled me in and I felt absolute comfort, love, oneness, and bliss. I felt no pain and no hatred. The feeling was love; PURE LOVE; real love.”
Lynnclaire Dennis merged with oneness while in the tunnel: “The light was getting brighter and warmer as I moved through the tunnel. The MUSIC, the celestial symphony, continued to fill the air with a psalm of Oneness, played on unseen instruments of peace. I arrived at the pinnacle and, standing at the entrance to the light, took a single step, leaving my right footprint imbedded in Eternity. I entered a sacred space – a place where I knew I had returned to my most essential nature, where I felt wholly and consciously united with all things and Source, where a soothing balm of peace was poured on my spirit by an unseen hand, an emollient so rich in love that to this day I cannot fully absorb or comprehend it.”

Soul Merge in the Void
Gwen J. merged with God in the Void: “I had completely merged again with God. It was a void, darkness, but unconditional love. I was no longer a separate being. I was where I belonged, where I came from. It was perfect. When it was time to return, I had to again differentiate from God and become a separate soul again. Yet I was still a part of God.”
Nancy Evans Bush saw symbols while in the Void representing the oneness of all opposites: Several years after her NDE, Nancy (a devout Christian) was looking through a book on Eastern philosophy. What she saw in the book so upset her she threw the book across the room. In the Eastern philosophy book was the same circular shapes she saw in her NDE. It was the Chinese symbol “yin-yang” which represents the oneness of all so-called opposite principles we find in the universe.”
Karen O. merged with the Void: “I found myself engulfed in a soothing blackness that seemed to pulse, breathe, and have a life of its own. It was like being in a womb. But, I was also very aware that I was the blackness. I was part of it and it was part of me.”

Soul Merge in the Life Review
Barbara Harris-Whitfield had a life review where she merged with God: “As we relived my life, God never judged me. God held me and kept me together… I — we at this point, for we are one, a very sacred one — God and I were merging into one sacred person.”
Laurelynn Martin merged with others during her life review: During Laurelynn’s life review, she relived an event when she was five years old and teased another girl to the point of tears. Laurelynn then felt exactly what the other girl was feeling. Laurelynn realized how the girl needed love, nurturing and forgiveness. Laurelynn then felt a love for this child that was so deep and tender, it was like the love between a mother and child. She realized that by hurting another person, she was only hurting herself. It was an experience of oneness with everyone. Another event she relived was similar to the previous one. As a child she made fun of a scrawny, malnourished asthmatic kid who eventually died from a cerebral aneurysm. The kid once wrote a love letter to her which she rejected. In her life review, she experienced his pain of being rejected. At the same time, she felt a tremendous amount of love for this boy and herself. Her life review connected her with him in a way that went beyond the physical. It was a connection that was felt at the level of the soul. She saw how the boy had a vibrant, bright light burning inside of him. She felt the strength of his spirit and vitality. It was an inconceivable moment especially knowing how much he physically suffered when he was alive.
Betty Eadie experienced a life review where she became one with others: “I not only re-experienced my own emotions at each moment, but also what others around me had felt. I experienced their thoughts and feelings about me… I saw love and happiness increase in others’ lives because of that one simple act on my part.”
Berkley Carter Mills had a life review where he saw himself when he was a child and killed a mother bird with a sling shot. At the time, he was so proud of that shot; but during his life review, he felt the pain that the mother bird’s babies went through when they starved to death.
Reinee Pasarow described how her life review revealed the most positive thing she did was to give special attention to a not so lovable boy at a summer camp so that he would know he was loved. During the review, she said this act of kindness was more important from her viewpoint of expanded awareness than if she had been President of the United States or the Queen of England.

Soul Merge in Afterlife Realms
Kevin Williams states that as the soul rises to higher afterlife realms the more the forces of oneness are applied to the soul: “In the higher realms where souls are more united in love, only perfect oneness survives. Many NDErs describe the lower hell realms as a condition where self-centeredness and darkness reigns supreme without inhibition. In my view, this suggests that as the soul rises to higher realms of vibration, the more the forces of oneness are applied to the soul. This means everyone becomes more and more on the same wavelength as the soul vibrations rise higher. That wavelength is the love, joy and peace of the light of God. Souls who dwell there want only the force of perfect unity, love and happiness to reign. This certainly does not mean that everyone goes around with plastered smiles and playing harps. I believe it does mean that souls desiring something different can find a realm to express their own vibrations. In the lowest realms, there is no oneness – only self-centeredness and misery. Because unity increases as the vibrations of the soul grow higher, no negative vibrations exists – only positive vibrations. This allows for a freedom and happiness that cannot be compared with the Earth experience.”
Quantum theory includes common elements found in NDEs including a merger with oneness: (1) universal light and quantum vacuum fluctuations – NDErs often describe an all-pervading, luminous presence. In physics, the vacuum is not empty but alive with fluctuating energy – suggesting a fundamental luminous substrate beneath reality. (2) a sense of oneness and the holographic princple – Many NDEs report unity with all things. The holographic principle proposes that each part contains information about the whole, mirroring experiential unity within multiplicity. (3) timelessness and relativistic time dilation – NDEs frequently include the loss of linear time. Relativity already shows that time is not absolute, and extreme conditions can dissolve ordinary temporal flow. (4) The life review and quantum retrocausality – Life reviews involve reliving the past from an expanded perspective. Retrocausality models allow future and past states to influence one another, loosening one-way time. (5) the out-of-body experience and quantum nonlocality – Conscious awareness reported outside the body parallels nonlocal phenomena, where information is not confined to a single location. (6) the tunnel Experience and wormhole geometry – The tunnel concept – movement through a passage toward light – resembles theoretical spacetime shortcuts connecting regions beyond ordinary distance. (7) telepathic communication and quantum entanglement – Instant, wordless knowing in NDEs resembles entangled systems where correlation occurs without signal exchange. (8) consciousness survival after death and quantum immortality – Some interpretations of quantum mechanics suggest consciousness may persist across quantum outcomes, loosely echoing NDE claims of continued awareness beyond bodily failure. (9) multidimensional realms and string theory – NDE landscapes are often described as layered or dimensional. Physics likewise explores extra dimensions beyond everyday perception. (10) mind over matter and wave function collapse – The intent shaping experience in NDEs parallels interpretations where observation participates in determining physical outcomes.
(11) A Creator of the cosmos and Godel’s incompleteness theory – Mathematical incompleteness shows that no system can fully explain itself, leaving open the possibility of a transcendent source beyond formal description. (12) An omnipresent field and the Higgs field – NDEs describe a presence that permeates everything. Physics confirms reality is structured by fields that exist everywhere, not just objects. (13) bilocation and quantum superposition – Reports of being “here and there” align conceptually with systems that exist in multiple states simultaneously. (14) mind/body dualism and wave-particle duality – Just as light is both wave and particle, NDEs suggest consciousness may be both embodied and non-embodied, depending on context. (15) the Void and the zero-point field – The NDE “Void” is often described as empty yet full of potential – mirroring the lowest-energy state that still contains activity. (16) mind/body separation and quantum decoherence – Separation of awareness from the body parallels decoherence, where systems disentangle from their environment and follow different trajectories. (17) invisible realms and dark matter – NDErs frequently describe unseen realms shaping reality. Physics likewise posits invisible components that dominate cosmic structure. (18) expanded awareness and quantum information primacy – NDErs report awareness vastly exceeding normal brain capacity. In quantum physics, information is increasingly viewed as more fundamental than matter itself. (19) reality responds to thought and the observer effect – NDErs frequently report environments that respond instantly to intention. In quantum experiments, measurement affects outcomes, blurring observer–observed boundaries. (20) Simultaneous Multiple Perspectives and the many-worlds interpretation – Some NDErs report perceiving multiple outcomes or viewpoints at once, paralleling models in which all possibilities coexist simultaneously.
(21) Fractal heaven landscapes and scale invariance – NDE realms are often described as endlessly detailed at every level. Fractals and quantum fields exhibit self-similar structure across scales. (22) instantaneous travel and quantum tunneling – Movement in NDEs often occurs without traversing space. Quantum tunneling allows particles to appear across barriers without classical motion. (23) perfect knowledge without learning and quantum state access – NDErs describe “knowing everything at once.” In quantum theory, a system’s state contains all accessible information simultaneously, not sequentially. (24) vibrational realms and frequency-based reality – NDEs often describe levels of existence as “higher” or “lower” vibration. Quantum systems are fundamentally frequency-defined. (25) loss of ego identity and quantum indistinguishability – NDErs often report loss of personal boundaries. Quantum particles of the same type are fundamentally indistinguishable, lacking individual identity. In conclusion, these correlations help explain why NDE testimonies feel strangely compatible with modern physics, even though they arise from entirely different methods of knowing.

7. Soul Merge With Other Souls
NDEs frequently describe a form of intimacy far beyond anything known in physical life – an intimacy in which consciousness itself becomes shared. In these NDEs, love is expressed through direct energetic union, where boundaries between selves temporarily dissolve. NDErs report “merging” with other souls, entering one another’s consciousness while still retaining their sense of individuality. This merging is often described as effortless and profoundly loving, revealing a unity rather than loss of individuality. Souls may merge with loved ones, groups of other souls, living people, or with a universal Whole. Soul merging in NDEs suggests that consciousness is capable of profound unity. The following NDEs explore how soul merge functions as knowledge-sharing and a remembrance of an original oneness that underlies all existence.
Betty Bethards describes merging with another soul means “stepping inside” their aura: “You will find (after death) that you will want to be with the one whom you truly love. It could even be someone from another incarnation. You will be with those you love, and there is a total merger which is a much higher experience and a deeper love bond than anything you can know on the Earth plane. This total merger is like stepping inside one another’s auras, a total blending of energies. It’s a way of expressing love and sharing. What you know on Earth as a sexual relationship takes the form of a higher merger of souls. There is no need for sexual organs on the Other Side. This merger of energies is far superior to the physical mechanics of the sexual experience. This merger is not limited to husbands and wives, but may be experienced by any two souls who are loving and caring.”
Kevin Williams compares soul merge with sexual intercourse: “In numerous NDE testimonies, NDErs describe merging with another being – whether it’s a deceased loved one, a spirit guide, or God’s light itself. This ‘merge’ is not physical but energetic. The NDEr retains self-awareness yet simultaneously experiences a total unity of mind, emotion, and spirit with the other. This merging is described as a complete intimacy that transcends human categories of closeness. When merging with the light, the NDEr merges fully into the light of God and the experience feels as though they have ‘become God,’ that is, knowing all things and being aware of all things and feeling all the love that exists with God.”
Nanci Danison merged with other souls: “After receiving my fill from Universal Knowledge, I realized that I could enter into my light-being friends and live their eternal lives as they had just done with my life as Nanci. So I merged my Energy into theirs as we formed a collective being of six. I could at one and the same time experience myself as the personality I had always known as ‘myself,’ as well as experiencing one of my friend’s lives as though I were my friend. Or I could experience what it was like to be a collective being.”
Tomas S. merged with other souls in heaven: “I moved forward in the tunnel, losing my ego, and merging with others. I was okay with that, because it was like coming back to my true home. I got so much information and I got answers and views as well as feelings of all people involved. All I had to do was think about it and I would get a telepathic answer. I understood that it is impossible to remember everything. So I asked one question, ‘What is the purpose of my life?’ I heard loving laughter and got the answer, ‘Do whatever you like, just do not hurt others.’ That is it – so simple.”
Sherry S. learned everyone merges with all souls: “I felt at one with all souls. We are from one. We go back to one.”
Anita Moorjani described telepathy in NDEs as merging with universal oneness: “I feel that we connect with others when we are in touch with that universal connection. Here’s what it feels like for me. Let’s say, for the sake of argument, I am able to telepathically communicate with you. What has happened is that I have cleared my mind, and made it more transparent and become more connected to that universal oneness, and you are doing the same thing. So, you and I are sort of accessing the same pool of ‘oneness’ info. But the reason it feels like mind to mind communication is because here in the physical, we are both communicating and connecting on the mind level. But because we are both accessing the same info at the same time from that oneness pool, and then when we use our mind to communicate with each other, we notice we have both come to the same conclusion, and then we interpret it as our minds have communicated to each other. But actually, we’ve both tapped into the same ‘oneness’ pool. That’s sort of how it feels to me.”
Some NDE testimonies include reports of the NDEr’s consciousness “merging” with a living person in order to see and hear through their eyes and ears: For example: (1) During an NDE, a 5-year-old boy who was suffering from meningitis briefly “went into” his sister’s head and saw the world through her eyes (Morse & Perry, 1990, p. 177). (2) A 48-year-old man was despondent and attempted suicide by hanging. During his NDE OBE he desperately sought help from his wife. She could not hear his cries, so he “went into” her body and could see and hear with her eyes and ears. When he made contact with her, he heard her exclaim, “Oh, my God!” Apparently she knew what was needed, because she grabbed a knife, ran out to where her husband was hanging, and cut him down (Greyson & Bush, 1992, p. 105). (3) During his NDE, George Rodonaia had been declared dead and experienced an extensive OBE. He was “inside his wife’s head” as she was picking out his grave and heard all of her thoughts. She was making a mental list of eligible men to date, with their characteristics as possible future husbands. Rodonaia later repeated all these details to her, considerably upsetting her. This account was later confirmed by his wife, Nino (Atwater, 1994, pp. 81–83; Atwater, personal communication, 7 March 2008). These cases imply that interaction with and influence over neural activity in the brain is possible; in particular, “merging” implies that the mind readily joins with and interacts with the brain, even another person’s brain.

8. Soul Merge With Everyone
NDEs frequently describe a profound sense of unity with everyone. NDErs report experiencing themselves as part of a single, living Whole. This state of oneness is deeply meaningful, purposeful, and infused with love, peace, and understanding. Those who undergo this form of soul merge often describe it as a direct knowing that everything and everyone is interconnected, sustained by the same underlying light. The following NDEs explore this merging with all beings and reality itself, revealing a vision of existence in which separation is an illusion and unity is a fundamental truth.
Donna GV merged with everyone existing as one whole collective: “Oneness, yes that is exactly my experience. We are one together as a whole collective. It’s an understanding. I knew then and there seemed to be definite purpose and order.”
Peter merged with the oneness of everyone: “I was engulfed in a great wave of compassion for the human race. I felt a oneness with everyone. The illusion of being alone in the world fell away and I felt a great calming peace that I haven’t felt since.”
Carol V. merged with everything, everyone, and God: “[I experienced] happiness beyond anything I can describe. Contentment. Complete perfection. Rapture! I knew I was part of everything and everyone and God. Maybe it is better said this way: We are all Connected.”
Jemma J. learned that merging with oneness is the reason we are here on Earth: “It (oneness) does exist and that it is the reason for us being here.”
Stefania S. describes merging with the oneness of everyone: “We all are expressions of a Love energy. It is from which we come and where we are destined to return so as to merge once again in this original Oneness which our minds make us believe we have lost. This place is Paradise and our Union with the All.”

9. Soul Merge With Jesus Christ
NDEs describe encounters with a radiant Being of Light identified as Jesus Christ experienced as a soul with whom the NDEr directly merges. These NDEs reveal an intimate union in which individual consciousness blends with Jesus’ divine light, love, and awareness, while still retaining personal identity. This merger is often described as overwhelming and transformative, infused with unconditional love that fully knows and accepts the soul without judgment. Similar imagery appears within Christian scripture itself. Symbolic interpretations of the Book of Revelation describe a mystical “marriage” between the human soul and the Christ consciousness which is an inner union representing the awakening of God’s identity within humanity. Altogether, these NDEs suggest that soul merging with Christ is a profound inner realization of unity between humans and God.
Betty Eadie merged with the light of Jesus: “I felt his (Jesus’) light blending into mine, literally, and I felt my light being drawn to his. It was as if there were two lamps in a room, both shining, their light merging together. It’s hard to tell where one light ends and the other begins; they just become one light. Although his light was much brighter than my own, I was aware that my light, too, illuminated us. And as our lights merged, I felt as if I had stepped into his countenance, and I felt an utter explosion of love.”
Dr. George Ritchie merged with the light of Jesus: “Suddenly I was aware that it was brighter, a lot brighter, than it had been. I stared in astonishment as the brightness increased, coming from nowhere, seeming to shine everywhere at once. All the light bulbs in the [hospital] couldn’t give off that much light. All the bulbs in the world couldn’t! It was impossibly bright: it was like a million welders’ lamps all blazing at once. ‘I’m glad I don’t have physical eyes at this moment,’ I thought. ‘This light would destroy the retina in a tenth of a second.’ No, I corrected myself, not the light. He. He would be too bright to look at. For now I saw that it was not light but a man who had entered the room, or rather, a man made out of light, though this seemed no more possible to my mind than the incredible intensity of the brightness that made up his form. The instant I perceived him, a command formed itself in my mind. ‘Stand up!’ The words came from inside me, yet they had an authority my mere thoughts had never had. I got to my feet and as I did came the stupendous certainty: ‘You are in the presence of the Son of God.’ If this was the Son of God, then his name was Jesus. This person was power itself, older than time and yet more modern than anyone I had ever met. Above all, with that same mysterious inner certainty, I knew that this man loved me. Far more even than power, what emanated from this presence was unconditional love. An astonishing love. A love beyond my wildest imagining. This love knew every unlovable thing about me – the quarrels with my stepmother, my explosive temper, the sex thoughts I could never control, every mean, selfish thought and action since the day I was born – and accepted me just the same.”
Eric A. merged with the light of Jesus: “He (Jesus) lifted me up in his arms and I was completely filled with his light and his love completely. It was the most incredible feeling I have ever experienced and I didn’t want to leave. Even though I couldn’t see him I knew this was Jesus.”
The Book of Revelation describes the soul merging with Jesus in heaven: A literal Interpretation of Chapter 19 of the Book of Revelation shows the apostle John seeing a great multitude of people in heaven praising God for the fall of Babylon. Then the “wedding supper of the Lamb” was announced. Jesus then returns to Earth with his “armies of heaven” and cast the “beast” and the “false prophet” into the “Lake of Fire.” According to Edgar Cayce, the symbolic interpretation is as follows: John witnessed the final salvation of the bodily, mental, and spiritual forces taking place in himself and collective humanity. This is the “Wedding of the Lamb” — the union of the body and mind with the Christ Consciousness (human-divine unity). When humanity recognizes the divinity within them as the controlling force in the world, and turns away from their own selfish pattern of living for self alone, the old pattern will disappear and the Christ pattern will emerge. The “Bride” is the body raised as a new being. The merging of the evolved self (soul) with the divine superconscious (Holy Spirit), which has taken place in John, must also take place in all humanity (verse 7). The “false prophet” symbolizes self-delusion. The “Lake of Fire” symbolizes self-judgment, self-condemnation, the repressed area of the subconscious mind.

10. Soul Merge With the Being of Light
NDEs often describe a soul merger with a radiant Being of Light whose presence is felt as something entered. In these NDEs, the soul is drawn into the Being of Light itself, dissolving boundaries between self and Source while still retaining a sense of individuality. The experience is often described as an overwhelming union – an intimate merging marked by unconditional love, profound peace, bliss, and a deep feeling of being fully known and accepted. This merging is described as a return to an original state of Wholeness in which love, light, and consciousness are shared without separation. Many NDErs report that language fails to capture the intensity of this unity, describing it instead as becoming love itself, or as awakening to a forgotten truth about their divine origins. These NDEs show that merging with the Being of Light is a common and transformative element of the NDE, one that resonates with ancient spiritual teachings about oneness, divine indwelling, and humanity’s deeper spiritual nature.
P.M.H. Atwater’s study revealed more than half of her subjects merged with the light: “52% said they merged into and joined as one with this light (or Being of Light).”
Margaret Birkin merged with the Being of Light and became blissful: “The love from this energy was amazing. It was so profound I sobbed uncontrollably. My next visit, I got closer and the same with the next visit. Finally, I was able to merge with this energy and the bliss, happiness, incredible peace that I felt inside. This being’s energy was so incredible. I did not want to leave. It spoke to me in thought and told me that one day when I had finished my spiritual development, this energy and I would work together. However, I had a hard path in front of me with my development and I was not to give up for in the long term. It would be worth it.”
Sarah L.G. and the Being of Light merged with increasing light: The Being of Light released Sarah’s hand and they moved through a tunnel, merging with an increasingly radiant light that radiated warmth, joy, relief, happiness, and overwhelming love.
Raymond Kinman merged with the Being of Light: Raymond was greeted by a radiant Being of Light and Love, not as a person but as an all-encompassing glow. In its presence, he felt a love so vast it defied words. His entire essence transformed into pure love, magnified beyond comprehension and diffused throughout the universe.
Josef P. merged with the Being of Light: Upon reaching the brilliant light, Josef was instantly enveloped by it, becoming one with its radiance. He felt an overwhelming, unparalleled love and became aware of a Being that seemed inseparable from the light itself.
Dr. Joyce Hawkes merged with the Being of Light: Joyce suddenly found herself before a radiant Being of Light, whose face was unseen yet communicated through a deep, wordless connection of oneness. The encounter transcended normal perception, flooding her with amplified emotions – overwhelming joy, peace, awe, and belonging. Though no life review occurred, she felt completely known and unconditionally accepted. Most of all, she was enveloped in profound, unconditional love.
Donna W. merged with the Being of Light and melded with its light: As Donna ascended to a higher realm, she encountered a radiant Being of pure white light, featureless yet gentle to behold. Merging with the Being, now without form herself, she felt completely enveloped in an overwhelming exchange of profound, unconditional love.
John B. merged with the Being of Light: “I am being drawn into this Light Being, as if I am to become a part of it. I feel completely relieved, I am finally at home, and I give in to it. Self-awareness fades as I move toward the Light Being.”
Gina L. and her Being of Light merged with other souls and their Beings of Light: “The Being of light was just there… Behind him were three other beings of light. They belonged with their respective being of light, and at the same time it was as if all four – my being of light and I – belonged with everyone. We are one and yet separate. As if we all merge into the same band of light beyond us and yet are here in what we are in.”
Josiane Antonette merged with Beings of Light: “I am filled with the essence of love and compassion. This magnetic power is filling every atom of me. I have never before experienced such depth and power of love. I am the power of love! Merging into an intimate dance wherein all boundaries have disappeared, I feel myself one with these beings of compassion. No words or sounds are being exchanged, and yet communication is happening. A strong presence assures me, ‘Yes, you are dying to the world of men. But to us you are being born. Do not be afraid. You have always been with us; we have always been with you. We know you. You just fell asleep during your time on Earth and forgot who you are. Now you are remembering’… Merging with the light, I am so overcome with gratitude and overwhelmed by the love that fills me that I cry… I merge with the light! I am the light, and the light is me. ‘From the light we have come, and to the light we shall all return,’ repeats the voice. What a joy to bathe in this incredible all-knowing, all-loving.”
In the Bible, Jesus as a Being of Light defined the mystery of humans merging with God: Jesus transfigured himself into a Being of Light (Matthew 17:1-8). And Jesus taught that we too are beings of light (Matthew 5:14-16). Jesus said he is the way, an example, a pattern which we can follow to attain at-onement with God as Jesus did. Jesus referred to the oneness of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, which suggests that God has a three-dimensional nature. One particular NDE account revealed that humans are made up of a “trinity” of bodies: a physical body, a mind body (soul) and a spirit body. There are also references in the Bible equating God to life, light and love. Thus, the Bible refers to divinity as a “trinity“: the Body of Christ, the Mind of Christ, and the Spirit of Christ. Paul states that “we have the mind of Christ” which shows that we too have God within us. Jesus taught that “you are gods” (John 10:30-36) which means that God dwells within all human beings. This agrees with NDE testimonies. We were made in the image (a trinity) of God. We too are “gods” meaning that we are sons and daughters of God (Psalm 82:6) just as Jesus is.

11. Soul Merge With the Higher Self
NDEs often describe a profound reunion with something deeply intimate – the NDEr’s own Higher Self. In these NDEs, personal identity is revealed as the sense of self dissolves into a fuller consciousness of their Higher Self whom the NDEr has always been. The soul is recognized as already connected to God, while earthly personality and ego are understood as temporary expressions meant to eventually reunite with this greater Self. The following NDEs explore this sacred process of soul merging as both a destiny after death and a living spiritual goal. They describe moments of overwhelming peace, joy, and completeness as consciousness reunites with its higher aspect, often in the presence of a Being of Light. These NDEs show that spiritual growth, prayer, meditation, and inner transformation are all part of an ongoing movement toward wholeness – one in which individuality is retained, yet harmonized within a greater oneness. They portray soul merge with the Higher Self as a return to our most essential nature. They are a reminder that God is not separate from us, but waiting to be consciously remembered and embodied.
P.M.H. Atwater revealed that everyone’s goal is to merge with their soul – their Higher Self – while alive on Earth: “I truly believe that soul discovery is the over-riding reason or purpose behind spiritual development… so we, in this lifetime, can be more mindful of who we really are and can align our will with God’s Will. When this occurs, we can merge more and more with the power of our own soul… At death, the soul and the ego (personality) merge into each other and become one again… This merging, this becoming more of what we really are, a soul, is one of the higher goals of any spiritual calling or religious ritual. It’s what undergirds the practice of prayer and meditation. It’s a large part of what makes the sacred, sacred. Our goal, as near as I can tell, is to link more with that perfect part of us, that Higher Self, True Self, that is still connected to God… and to do this while alive and actively engaged with our fellows… Again and again, NDErs, when describing their scenario, actually depict that mergence, and they certainly talk long and lovingly about their true self, their true identity, their soul. At the deathbed, merging into our soul, joining with the divine, becomes primary.”
Lynnclaire Dennis merged with her Higher Self and the Being of Light: “I chose to merge with that [higher] self and began to dance. Each step drew me closer to the light. Then, in a sacred place somewhere before the light, I found myself being held, gently rocked, nurtured, and embraced in the arms of the one I believed to be the presence (Being of Light)… I knew I had returned to my most essential nature, where I felt wholly and consciously united with all things and Source.”
Jan Price described merging with her Higher Self: “I know that I have never felt such peace – a peace beyond calm, beyond words. It is indescribable ecstasy, quiet joy, liquid love; a feeling of incredible ease, the pure pleasure of being with no concern for doing – being one with all that is, suspended and supported in a sea of love. Merging with the energy of all that is came the feeling of completeness – and an utter contentment in being complete – a moving into myself and knowing the fullness of me. Then came the golden light… A sweetness, an essence so pure, filled me, was me. This is what God is, all is, I am. With purity of heart I saw God and knew there is nothing else. I felt myself merging with, and ascending into, that crystalline brilliance. I touched true Joy, and I was lifted into the fullness of Being — the Essence of Life. In this glory I was free, and I beheld the Love that knows no conditions — the self-givingness of the Lifeforce we call God, ever nurturing and sustaining itself. All outlines disappeared, and there was no separation. Maintaining individual awareness, I was one with the Whole.”
Mira S. merged her soul with her Higher Self: “I had gone through a complete transformation and transmutation of the previous self into birthing a new Higher Self. I was bringing with it an immediate awakening into the ‘knowing’ of Universal Truths and the Reality of Supreme Self… I received a downpour of higher Truths and realizing its Higher Self from having merged in Oneness with It.”
John B. experienced oneness when merging his Higher Self with the Being of Light: “If ‘closest’ to Oneness, then my highest consciousness was while merging with the Light Being.”
Kathryn H. merged her Higher Self with other Higher Selves: “I do not feel nearly as afraid of death. It seems like death will be an opportunity to be joined again with all Beings in a state of merging our individual selves. No need to fear that. It is wonderful! I will continue to develop my Higher Self and realize that is what is ‘real.’”
Gregg S. learned about merging with your Higher Self while on Earth: “Merging your higher plane of self, your eternal self, with this lower plane of being is totally up to you. You will experience, and have experienced with this merger, things you must overcome, because these things will get in your way as you try to ascend. Things like pain, fear, greed, grief, anger, lust, and other negative charges from past and present lifetimes are obstacles all of us must overcome to get beyond them.”

12. Soul Merge With the Matrix
NDEs often describe a soul merge with an underlying structure that binds all existence together. In these NDEs, consciousness expands into a vast, interconnected field which is frequently perceived as a matrix, grid, web, or network of light and energy. This matrix is experienced as a living reality in which consciousness itself is shared and omnipresent. Ego falls away, replaced by an immediate knowing that every soul and every life is woven together by love and intelligence. The following NDEs explore this concept of soul merge with the Matrix of Oneness, revealing how NDErs encounter reality as a unified whole. They describe becoming everything at once, perceiving cords of light connecting all beings, and understanding existence as a perfectly ordered pattern or energy network. These NDEs show that beneath the illusion of separation lies a fundamental matrix of unity – one in which all souls are eternally linked and known as one.
Mellen-Thomas Benedict describes the “Higher Self Matrix“: “As the light revealed itself to me, I became aware that what I was really seeing was our Higher Self matrix. We all have a Higher Self, or an oversoul part of our being. It revealed itself to me in its truest energy form. The only way I can really describe it is that the being of the Higher Self is more like a conduit. It did not look like that, but it is a direct connection to the Source that each and every one of us has. We are directly connected to the Source. So the light was showing me the Higher Self matrix. It was not committed to one particular religion. So that is what was being fed back to me during my life after death experience. As I asked the light to keep clearing for me, to keep explaining, I understood what the Higher Self matrix is. We have a grid around the planet where all the Higher Selves are connected. This is like a great company, a next subtle level of energy around us, the spirit level, you might say.”
Elle D. experienced ego loss when merging with a matrix of oneness: “Only the matrix of oneness could explain how I was everywhere, everyone, all at the same time. There was no single consciousness of ego, of ‘I’, though I seemed to want to create that because I was overwhelmed by the flood of being all things.”
Linda Stewart learned that souls are connected as one like a light grid through love: “Everyone has a light connection to their Higher Self which is an extension of our lives. Everyone is interconnected, forming a light grid. We are all one. Our oneness is interconnected by love and this love is connected to the grid. Our love connection to each other is available for us to access.”
Romy saw that everything is connected like a web of light: “I could see that I am connected to everything in a perfectly ordered web of light.”
Karen M. merged with everything connected by strands of light: “I became one with everything and knew, felt, saw how we are all connected. As I was leaving the Earth I could see the connections as strands of light at first and then I couldn’t ‘see’ those connections, but it just was.”
Cesar G. merged with a network of energy: “[ I ] understood the complexity and simplicity of how everything is connected; and how I was part of that network of energy… God made me aware of the concept of Oneness.”
Kathryn E. learned that all souls are merged together by a cord of light: “God showed me a golden thread or cord of light that connected every human being across the Earth, so this is a form of oneness or interconnectivity… This oneness became more apparent when God showed me all of the individual souls being woven together for a pattern for good.”
Debby Ellen M. merged with the oneness of the universe through the silver cord: “I literally felt one with the universe. I was not afraid at all… I felt as if I was connected to the Earth by an invisible ‘silver’ thread.”

13. Soul Merge With God
NDEs frequently describe a profound realization that the separation humans feel from God is a temporary condition shaped by life in a physical body. Death dissolves the illusion of separation and reveals an underlying unity with love and God’s consciousness. NDErs consistently describe awakening to the understanding that every soul is an expression of a single, living Source. They reveal that life’s deepest purpose is a return to conscious oneness with God through love and spiritual growth. The following NDEs explore this concept of soul merge with God, portraying union as a return to an original Wholeness in which individuality is fulfilled, consciousness is expanded, and God’s love is fully known.
Jan Price learned our physical bodies may cause us to feel separate from God: “I now understood more fully why we don’t feel our Oneness with God moment to moment, constantly, while on the Earth plane. We feel separated because of our physical bodies; we think we ARE the body and are therefore physical, yet we know that God is Spirit. Thus the sense of separation.”
Stefania S. learned that everyone is destined to merge with the original Oneness: “I knew that real life is something other than what we think it is. We all are expressions of a Love energy. It is from which we come and where we are destined to return so as to merge once again in this original Oneness which our minds make us believe we have lost. This place is Paradise and our Union with the All.”
Joseph Kerrick learned that the aim of human life is to merge with the light and become one with God through love: “Somehow we had all forgotten that we were the one original being, and lived out our lonely lives in the illusion of separateness. Now that I had awakened to our true condition, I could see that the aim of human life was for all of us to come together again, to merge back into the original being and become the One we truly are beneath the surface. I understood that the way to do this was love. Love was simply the name of the natural force which like gravity tended to pull everything back together. As human beings, the way we experienced this force was love. As fragmented creatures, our job was to love each other and become one again.”
Jeffrey O. learned everyone is one with God: “We are all ONE and we are in actuality One with God. Everything is in perfect order.”
Barbara S. learned that every soul (spirit) is a part of God: “I became aware that I am the light also. We are all part of the light. Each soul is part of the whole or God.”
Edgar Cayce revealed that the human spirit is one with God: “Know that not only God is God… but self is a part of that Oneness.” According to Cayce, Jesus exemplified a human “at-one-with” God and made that oneness manifest in his life among others. Cayce often noted that Jesus simply went around doing good according to God’s inner guidance to Him. An ideal way for all of us to live. Cayce explained how our superconscious mind (spirit) is something apart from anything earthly and only makes its presence known or is knowable when the conscious mind with the subconscious soul lifts itself up through deep meditation into the vast, expansive level that is the superconsciousness.
Sharon Q. learned that everyone is one in spirit with God: “Each of us is a faceted expression of our Creator. We all exist as a Unity of Oneness in Spirit form that enters into life, sort of like a Cosmic virtuality game of life. It is grand and God is Light and Love. God is a creating Intelligence of Pure Consciousness.”
John Star learned that humans must rediscover their oneness with God while on Earth: “The Earth is a manifestation of God. For us to benefit from our experience here, we must rediscover our oneness with God on Earth.”
Kevin Williams concludes that our goal is complete merger with God through spiritual development on Earth: “Because there is no time in the spirit world, we enjoy eternities in heaven. A soul can choose to remain in heaven for as long as desired and can choose to operate on that level of spiritual development forever. Generally, however, we stay in heaven for as long as it serves our spiritual development. This is because one of our main goals for existence is to attain a level of spiritual growth that will bring us back to a complete merger with God in the highest heaven. However, spiritual development is much more difficult in the spirit world compared to developing spiritually in the physical realm. The full range of love (child’s love, martial love, and parental love) is ideally available on Earth for which we can become more spiritually developed. Although our goal is to remain forever in heaven, our greatest goal is to bring heaven to Earth. If we don’t help those in the lower realms to develop a higher level of spiritual development, we cannot truly enjoy heaven. This is because our family and friends may exist at these lower levels. As Mellen-Thomas Benedict so eloquently described it, ‘We are going to link up, hold hands, and walk out of hell together.’ For this reason, we leave paradise not just for the sake of our own spiritual development, but for those we love. By doing so, we are also doing this for God’s sake. We are assured by God that when we leave paradise for another incarnation on Earth — a lower spiritual level — we will be brought home safely again. Ultimately, everyone will merge with God at the highest level as it was in the beginning. Ultimate paradise lost will truly become ultimate paradise found again.”
Renee M. merged with God and became all-knowing: “Almost instantaneous after the feeling of floating upward, the beautiful bright light transformed me and sucked me into its magical atmosphere. I merged with God. I instantly became all knowing. I became a part of the Creator itself. I had no known memory of the feelings of separation from anything. This may be hard for most to understand, but I had been there before. You can never be separated from yourself. Death is an Earth-created illusion and illness. Come back where? I never left.”
Kevin Williams says merging with God is like becoming God and knowing all things: “Concerning the topic of soul merge, it is a phenomenon that appears often in NDEs. Usually, it happens when the experiencer merges fully into the light of God and the experience feels as though they have ‘become God’, that is, knowing all things and being aware of all things and feeling all the love that exists with God.”
Randy Gehling describes what it feels like to merge with the light: “When merging with the light during an NDE, it feels like your body explodes in a pleasant way into millions of different atoms that can think its own thoughts and have its own feelings. All at once you feel like a boy, a girl, a dog, a cat, a fish, then an old man, an old woman, and then a little tiny baby.”
Jayne Smith described the ecstasy of soul merger with God: “This white light began to infiltrate my consciousness. It came into me. It seemed I went out into it. I expanded into it as it came into my field of consciousness. There was nothing I was aware of except this brilliant white light. The light brought with it the most incredible feeling of total love, total safety, total protection. I was just enveloped in it. I remember feeling almost cradled by it. It was so dynamic it was almost palpable. As I existed in this white light, in this incredible love, I began to be rapturous. The rapture built. The bliss built. My consciousness began to expand with the bliss of it all… Then I simply remember I became more blissful, more rapturous, more ecstatic. I was just filling and filling with this light and love that was in the light. The dynamics of this light are not static at all. They are so dynamic and so much going on in there of love and joy and knowledge. As you take it into yourself, or as it goes into you and you receive it, your ecstasy level just becomes tremendous. I knew that I had lost all sense of having a body. It was just my consciousness, sort of pure and free floating, and I did not think at all during this part of the experience. I had no thoughts. I was a receiving station. I merely felt and absorbed and took in and did not think at all. I reached the point in the rapture of it all where I thought to myself suddenly, the first thought. ‘I wonder how much more of this I can stand before I shatter?’ With that thought, the light began to recede. So, the universe will not let us shatter. We cannot take in more of this bliss and joy than we are able to handle at a time.”
Lonnie L. merged with oneness through God: “I did feel that there is a connection, a unity or oneness that we are all connected through God.”
Jeremiah J. merged with the oneness of God: “The oneness is God. It is all one and the same. God is all around us and in us on this earthly plane as well.”
Brandon R. was given the choice to merge with the light forever or return to life. He recognized the light as a living force of pure compassion. Saint Peter appeared and offered him a choice: to merge with the light forever or return to Earth – without judgment either way, as judgment did not exist in that realm. When Brandon asked for guidance, Peter told him the decision was entirely his. Gently, he reminded Brandon of his wife and child. Moved by their need for him, Brandon chose to return.
Aaron M. merged with the light and learned everything is connected: “Suddenly the whiteness feels like it’s fusing with me. It’s so warm, it’s flowing through me and I’m merging with it… They (other souls) explain that because this flows through everything, it means that everything and everyone is connected.”
An Indian physician saw souls merging with and emerging from the light: “There was a beautiful vision of stars roaring past me. At the center of all that tumult was a glowing light. Each star appeared to be a minute center of consciousness. It was merging into and emerging from the central consciousness as desired by that cosmic WILL which shone like a very huge sun!”
Howard Storm learned that we return to God to become energized with the oneness of God: “One of the reasons, I was told, that all the countless beings had to go back to their Source was to become invigorated with this sense of harmony and oneness. Being apart for too long a time diminished them and made them feel separate. Their greatest pleasure was to go back to the Sources of all life.”
Vicki W. learned about oneness and omnipotence: “It’s not about being omnipotent. It’s about an understanding of oneness. We are a part of God. Not we are apart from God and need some minister of religious faith person to talk to him on our behalf. We can talk to God directly and he answers.”
Sandra Rogers described “sin” as forgetting our oneness with God: “It is best to think of sin as the mistake of forgetting our oneness with God.”
The Bible describes humanity‘s oneness with God: “For in him (God) we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). “For from him and through him and to him are all things” (Romans 11:36). “One God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.” (Ephesians 4:6)

14. Soul Merge With Everything
NDEs often describe a moment when consciousness expands into a vast state of unity with everything. NDErs report becoming aware of reality as an indivisible Whole where distinctions between self and everything cease to exist. This state is frequently described as merging with all souls, all life, all matter, and even the fabric of the universe itself. These NDEs portray this all-encompassing union with everything in remarkably consistent ways. NDErs describe an overwhelming realization that everything is interconnected and known from within rather than observed from a distance. Love, consciousness, and existence itself are experienced as a single reality, often beyond language and emotion. These NDEs show that one of the most profound aspects of the NDE is an awakening to an all-inclusive Oneness in which everything that exists is recognized as part of the same living Whole.
Stafania S. merged with the “All” similar to Hindu and Buddhist “samadhi“: “I experienced a state of merging with the All, the one which the oriental traditions define as ‘samadhi’ or state of cosmic merging… I had the experience of merging with everything that lives and vibrates in this Universe.”
Karin F. felt oneness with everything and everyone: “When I was with the large being in the sea of light, I felt at peace as though I could do anything, be anything no limitations. I felt my oneness with everything and everyone.”
Sherry Gideons saw the light as the oneness of everything: “This was the brightest light I had ever seen… It was everything all at once: love, freedom, release, and the oneness of all that we are.”
Jeremy experienced oneness with everything: “I become aware of a sudden knowing and feelings of oneness with everything… I became one with everything that ever was and everything that ever will be. I knew I’d left the physical world somehow because I specifically remember saying to myself, ‘Wow, I’ve got to bring this knowledge back!'”
Ingrid H. experienced oneness with everything: “There was nothing that was not love. It is not the love that we know on Earth. It doesn’t have to do anything with feelings. It is like when you cannot breathe and now everything is air. It is the essence of everything. It is what we are. I don’t know if I would call it love, or bliss, or peace, or oneness. It is simply an indescribable sense of belonging to everything, of being everything, of being at home.”
Trisha S. experienced oneness with everything: “I felt a larger […] universal oneness. I felt connected to everything and everyone on Earth and across the universe.”
Cory G. became one with everything: “I felt a strong ‘oneness’ with the universe, supreme being, fellow Humans, etc. I still have this feeling expressed as empathy.”
Kathy S. felt one with everything: “I felt at one with everything. I had no boundaries. I was not in a body.”
Joshua L. became one with everything: “I became all, and expanded infinitely in all directions, and could see the universe as a single point. We are all one.”
Robyn F. became one with everything beyond the senses: “My experience took me to another realm where I ‘saw’ with other-than worldly eyes and ‘heard’ with other-than worldly ears, and I became one with oneness.”
Hailey M. became a part of everything: “I was a part of everything and everything was a part of me, akin to puzzle pieces being put together and all of the energy of the universe was connected to me and I to it.”
Jennifer J. experienced oneness with God, the universe, and all things: “I encountered awareness in being one with the universe and with all things, especially as one with the Creator and all that is created.”
Garry H. learned that all things are connected: “I felt I could know everything about any object or person that I focused on because in the big scheme of things all things were directly connected.”
Penny W. learned that everything is connected: “I was made aware that EVERYTHING is connected. All people, all things, all life that exist are connected. All of our thoughts are connected and they together influence the direction of the world and the universe. We are connected both in the now, and in the other places. We are connected to spirits as well and they are with us, although many are unable to sense or know this. Everything that every thing does impacts all. ALL.”
Bryan D. learned that all living things are connected to the light: “All of consciousness, all things that carry life, are connected and are of that light force energy.”
15. Soul Merge With the Universe
NDEs frequently describe a profound expansion of consciousness into the universe. NDErs report becoming the universe by merging into a boundless field of light where time and space lose all meaning. NDErs are absorbed into a greater Whole, felt as the Source from which life itself arises. The following NDEs describe a soul merger with the universe as a state of complete oneness. These NDEs emphasize unity over separation, and love as the fundamental fabric binding all existence together. Many NDErs describe their return to earthly life as a painful re-entry from this state of total belonging, underscoring how deeply transformative this universal oneness felt to those who experienced it.
Mark J. merged with the universe: “My mind was ‘merged’ with the universe. I had returned from whence I came, to ‘the Place’ I was before I was born.”
Lauren J. merged into the oneness of the universe: “I felt completely at one with the universe. Like a great light had absorbed me, a light free from all suffering. A light of peace, understanding, acceptance and complete tranquility. I describe coming back to life as being ‘ripped back from the oneness.'”
Michael F. merged with the oneness with the universe: “Suddenly, I find myself immersed inside a light. I found myself immersed in this all-encompassing light where time has no meaning. Space has no meaning. I have a feeling of oneness with the Universe.”
Sheila Berry became one with the universe: “I had a feeling of great peace and a oneness with what I can only describe as the universe.”
Tara S. became one with God and the universe: “I believe we are all a part of the whole. I experienced a oneness with God and the universe.”
Sally S. felt oneness with the universe and God: “I felt oneness with ‘the universe, God’ whatever one may call this.”
Keely S. learned that everyone is connected as part of the universe: “We are all part of the same universe, connected on a level I have yet to fully comprehend. Our kindness to each other is what truly matters, because while we are individuals, we are all part of this universe.”
16. Soul Merge As a Homecoming
Many NDEs describe entering the afterlife as a return – a “homecoming” to something profoundly familiar. In these testimonies, “home” is a state of being – an intimate reunion with the Source of existence itself. NDErs often describe crossing a threshold where the sense of separation dissolves and consciousness merges into a greater Whole. Across these NDEs, homecoming is repeatedly described as merging with light, love, or oneness. It is an experience marked by deep peace, unconditional acceptance, and complete knowing. Many NDErs recount a certainty that this realm is their true origin, more real and enduring than earthly life. The feeling is one of becoming whole, becoming connected, and coming home. Together, these NDEs show that the ultimate destination is remembered as a return to unity, love, and the place from which consciousness first emerged.
Jill D. experienced homecoming as a merging with everything: “I was ‘one’ with everything. I was home. My personal identity disappeared but my essence continued to exist.”
A Child’s NDE experienced homecoming as a merger with the light: “I died and drifted into a safe black Void of comfort and ease, no pain and no fear. This was a place where I felt right at home. Off in the distance I saw a very small light. It was drawing me to it… I felt like this was my real home, this place where I was with this beautiful light which was God. I felt surrounded by the light and was one with it.”
Cara A. experienced homecoming as merging with the light: “I could see not with eyes but through sensing. I was enveloped in the Light. I felt unconditional love, peace and joy to an extent that can never be felt or experienced here. I was one with the Light. I was whole. I was home.”
Andrew Petro experienced homecoming as being one with the light: “The Light also knew everything that I have ever done or will do, and the Light loved me without conditions… Only warmth, peace, joy, happiness, forgiveness and love in the Light. I was one with the unconditionally loving Light. I was home. I was home forever.”
Christopher H. experienced homecoming as being one with the light: “I was filled with a truly indescribable feeling of pure LOVE. I was one with this spirit, filled with love and the knowledge of the universe. I knew I was home.”
Bonnie C. experienced homecoming as being part of the light: “I felt I was part of the light, like one tiny fractionated sliver returning home.”
Jeff H. experienced homecoming as oneness within the light: “I get the feeling that we are all part of something much greater than any of us on an individual level. In the light, there was a oneness, a coming home.”
Christina C. experienced homecoming as oneness with the light: “I knew it (the light) was home. It felt like love. In fact, it was pure love that went beyond human words. It was more love than a single human could possibly contain. It was also a very peaceful and comforting love. That was home. That was Source in the most literal sense, and I simply knew it… It is everything, and it is all of us, too. We are also it.”
D.W. experienced homecoming as becoming one of a greater Whole: “We are each pieces of a greater whole as I understand it. And getting back where we can all be together again is the ultimate ‘going home.'”
Carl D. experienced homecoming where all are one: “In HOME, all are ONE, and yet there are things there that are beyond the ONE that make up the individuals that we are while still being ONE. It makes no sense, I know that, yet it feels true.”
Colleen J. experienced homecoming as a unifying connection with life: “Just as the absolute knowing and experience of ‘home’ as unifying, a feeling of connection to life itself, no boundaries to who I am.”
Sarah S. experienced a homecoming of oneness: “Then something spoke to me. It was the Universe or the Oneness. It spoke to me in the language of knowing. It didn’t show in detail what was on the other side of that door, but I knew it was everything that is good. Home was of pure peace and pure love. The Oneness was giving me a choice to keep going through the doorway or to go back to my Earthly life.”
Cheryl G. experienced a homecoming of oneness: “I knew that I was hovering at the edge of no return. It was entirely up to me. I could go home right now. I know home, I know this place. The ‘oneness’, the place of love, peace, understanding and knowledge of all is also the place where time does not exist. All of what we humans call ‘time’ is present in this ‘oneness’.”

17. Soul Merge As Consciousness Expansion
Many NDEs show that the act of soul merge is a profound expansion of consciousness. These NDEs portray consciousness widening beyond ordinary limits – becoming more alert and vastly more inclusive than human perception allows. The sense of identity stretches outward, transcending the boundaries of the physical body while remaining fully conscious, often with an intensified feeling of knowing. In these NDEs, merging with the Light or the universe itself becomes a enlargement of consciousness. Personal identity may temporarily recede, yet consciousness grows more vivid, multidimensional, and expansive. This state is frequently described as touching the very Source of existence, where individuality and universality coexist, and where consciousness itself is revealed as far greater than anything experienced in earthly life.
Nanci Danison described merging with the light as consciousness expansion: “First, my level of alertness did not change after it expanded dramatically once I was thoroughly infused with the Light. Second, my level of consciousness continued to evolve through higher and more expansive levels until I was about to fully merge into Source/God.”
Mark W. described merging with the Being of Light as consciousness expansion: “My lower, ordinary consciousness expanded and merged wholly into this Being. For a few moments, I forgot my own narrow personality and I became one with it. The Being had a quality of enormous but particular individuality.”
Andrew Petro expanded and merged with the universe: “The Light allowed me to expand and become one with the universe, and then rammed me back into my frail, earthly body.”
Diane Goble expanded and merged with the oneness: “I saw the multi-dimensionality of the universe. My consciousness expanded so far beyond the physical plane that I was no longer aware of it, nor of my self. I was so much a part of it all, there was no distinction.”
Curtis K. expanded and merged with everything: “I felt myself becoming more and more aware, self-aware. I had feelings of expanding awareness, becoming everything known, experiencing everything yet to be known.”

18. Soul Merge and Reincarnation
Within many NDEs and spiritual traditions, the idea of soul merging is revealed as the turning point where reincarnation either continues or finally ends. These NDEs describe death as a decisive moment of recognition when consciousness encounters the Light, confronts the illusion of separateness, and chooses whether to fully reunite with its Source or return to embodied experience. From these perspectives, reincarnation persists as long as individuality remains anchored in ego, desire, and attachment. Full liberation occurs when the soul relinquishes that separative identity and recognizes itself as inseparable from God. This merging is often described as the personality dissolving, and individuality is transcended, yet consciousness is expanded rather than erased. What is lost is not being, but the illusion of being apart. Strikingly similar concepts appear across modern NDE testimonies, ancient Eastern religions, and mystical traditions. They describe a merging with the Light, becoming one with God, attaining Nirvana, or realizing at-onement. Their message is consistent: liberation from the cycle of reincarnation comes through a recognition of unity. Love and unity with the greater whole move the soul toward oneness, while self-centeredness reinforces separation and reincarnation.
Thomas Sawyer learned that merging with the light means becoming God and the cycle of reincarnation ends: “Once you enter into the light and blend with God, you become God. God is light and light is love… The incomprehensible part is at that point at which you no longer exist and you become only light when you fully merge with the light. This is because the character and the characteristics that you are, the uniqueness that is you and nobody else, still exists when you cease to exist as a personality. But every bit of your personality is available for reincarnation. That’s the paradox part… If a person dies and merges completely into the light, another reincarnation is improbable. However, it is more usual for people to have earthly attachments and not merge completely with the light. Such souls may have characteristics of their personality, which they do not want merged with the light.
Dr. Kenneth Ring’s study revealed reincarnation ends when merging with God: “Eight of the fourteen respondents said that they felt the cycle of reincarnation would eventually come to an end. They indicated that at this point there would be existence as pure spiritual being and/or a merging with God. One respondent said: ‘Then you exist as pure spiritual form, as a pure spiritual being.’ Another responded, ‘You become an integral part of God. When everyone reaches that point it is Nirvana.'”
Edgar Cayce revealed that merging with God means being aware of yourself as a part of God and part of everything. The cycle of reincarnation then ends: God’s plan for the soul is a cycle of experience that is unlimited in scope and duration. Through this evolutionary cycle, the soul will come to know the creation in all its aspects at the discretion of the will. The cycle would be completed when the desire of the will was no longer different from the thought of God. The consciousness of the soul would then merge with its spiritual consciousness of its identity with God. Then the soul will return to its Source as the companion it was intended to be. As a companion, the soul would remain conscious of its separate individuality and would be aware of its own free will as it now acted as a part of God, but not diverting its mind because it was in agreement with God’s influence on the mind of the soul. Until this state of at-onement was reached, the soul would not be a companion in the true sense of the word. God is aware of everything that happens and must therefore be aware of the consciousness of each individual. The return of the soul is the return of the image to that which imagined it. The consciousness of the individual – its soul record – could not be destroyed without destroying a part of God. When a soul returns to God it becomes aware of itself not only as a part of God, but as a part of every other soul, and everything. What is lost is the ego – the desire to do other than the desire of God. When the soul returns to God, the ego is voluntarily relinquished. When the individual has attained complete human-divine unity, its cycle of reincarnations is finished, the soul is liberated, and the soul then merges with its spirit and, therefore, with God.
Dr. Kenneth Ring compares Tibetan Buddhism with the NDE involving the soul’s merger with the light: “The Tibetan Book of the Dead (Bardo Thodol) begins with the encounter with the Primary Clear Light, then moves into the bardo (afterlife realm) of dharmata, with its fabled peaceful and wrathful deities, and finally into the bardo of becoming with its lonely and frightened individual being blown about in his mental body by the winds of karma, eventually to take rebirth in another physical body. The NDE, on the other hand, begins with a tremendously reassuring sense of peace and well-being, which eventually culminates with the glory of absorption by and merging with the light, but always ends with a return to the present physical body, often as a result of one’s sense of subjective choice. The NDEr returns from death, then, and returns transformed, but the journeyer of the Tibetan Book of the Dead actually dies, either to be liberated or to be reborn into a new life some time later.
The Tibetan Buddhist way to liberation from reincarnation is by recognizing the light after death to be your own mind and self. Many of modern NDEs agree with teachings preserved for over a thousand years within Tibetan Buddhism. The Tibetan Book of the Dead teaches that liberation from the cycle of reincarnation is attained when, after death, the “soul” recognizes the “Clear Light of Ultimate Reality” as the soul’s own mind and self. This experience of becoming one with this light is called Nirvana. Similarly, in Hindu philosophy, Nirvana is attained by recognizing the “soul” (atman) to be one with God (Brahman). In Tibetan Buddhism, “delok” (literally “those who returned from death”) are people who were believed to have died, journeyed through the realms beyond death, and then returned to life to report what they witnessed. Their accounts bear a striking resemblance to modern NDEs. Like contemporary NDErs, deloks have described leaving the physical body, traveling through otherworldly realms, encountering beings associated with death and judgment, and gaining profound moral insight before being sent back to life with a message for the living. Read about the sixteenth century delok Lingza Chokyi’s NDE. Read about the modern delok Dawa Drolma’s NDE.
Tibetan Buddhism describes a process similar to the NDE merging with the light: The purpose behind the Buddhist bardo states after death is to provide the dying an opportunity to become enlightened and attain Buddhahood, or if enlightenment is not attained, to secure a favorable rebirth. As mentioned earlier, with Buddhism the goal to be attained during NDEs is to become one with the ‘Clear Light of Ultimate Reality.’ NDErs have described this as a ‘merging’ process and ‘becoming one with the Light.’ This loss of ego and at-onement aspect involved in NDEs and the Buddhist bardo journey are identical… Buddhists believe this light to be the light from all the enlightened ones (much like the Being of Light) which is indistinguishable from true essence of everyone.
Hinduism teaches that liberation from reincarnation occurs when the soul merges with God. In Hinduism, “moksha” is the traditional Sanskrit term for release or liberation from the cycle of reincarnation. In the Upanishads, it is proper knowledge, in the sense of insight into the nature of reality, that enables the aspiring seeker to achieve liberation from reincarnation. When this happens, the individual “atman” (soul) is believed to merge into the cosmic Brahman (God). A traditional image is that of a drop of water that, when dropped into the ocean, loses its individuality and becomes one with the sea. Although widespread, this metaphor does not quite capture the significance of this merger. Rather than losing one’s individuality, the Upanishadic understanding is that the atman is never separate from Brahma; hence, individuality is illusory, and moksha is simply waking up from the dream of separateness. The most that the classical texts of Hinduism say about the state of one who has merged with the godhead is that the person has become one with pure “beingness,” consciousness, and bliss.
Edgar Cayce revealed that goodness results in oneness while evil results in separation: Karma is memory. As one recalls or relives situations, one meets self again, and a new decision point, or crossroads, is presented to the soul. In life, “good” would be equated with compatible, harmonious actions and thoughts which consider the needs and desires of others, along with self’s needs and desires. “Evil” would be equated with actions and thoughts that are motivated by a self-orientation that pays little or no attention to the needs and desires of others and the Whole. Metaphysically speaking, good results in oneness, and evil results in a sense of separation. Decisions in one’s life could be approached by evaluating which choices promote greater oneness and which promote separation.

19. Conclusion: The Paradox of Oneness
Soul merge is one of the most transformative aspect of the NDE. Again and again, NDErs describe the same essential shift: the familiar boundary of ego dissolves, and what remains is an expanded consciousness experienced as love and unity. In this state, separation is revealed as a kind of perceptual construct. Whether expressed as merging with God, entering a collective consciousness, reuniting with the Higher Self, or dissolving into a vast matrix of light, the message is consistent: the deepest layer of identity is a participation in a greater Whole.
Yet NDEs also reveal a crucial nuance: soul merging is not the end of individuality. Many describe a complete oneness alongside continued self-awareness. The personality may vanish, but something essential remains recognizable: the “I” as an expanded Whole. This is why soul merge is so difficult to translate into ordinary language. The NDE repeatedly shows reality as capable of holding both at once: distinctness within unity, and uniqueness within total belonging.
This paradox is also where soul merge becomes meaningful. Several NDEs suggest that resistance to unity simply reflects an attachment to separateness. In contrast, surrender is revealed as recognition: a willingness to let go of the illusion that we are cut off from one another and from Source. In this sense, soul merge is a revelation about life. The life review experience – where one feels the joy or pain of others as one’s own – implies that oneness is the operating reality beneath human experience. Because this is true, then compassion is an alignment with how things actually are.
Finally, the comparisons to Eastern traditions, mystical Christianity, and even parallels with modern quantum physics point toward the same concept from different angles. Unity is fundamental while ego is temporary. The cumulative result is difficult to ignore. Soul merge is consistently described as the moment the soul remembers what it actually is, and what it has always been. It is an expression of a single living Consciousness, with individuality intact, and never truly separate.
If the NDE testimonies in this article are taken seriously on their own terms, then the conclusion is simple and radical: the end of the illusion of separation is not annihilation – it is a homecoming. The merging is not the loss of what is real, but the shedding of what was never fully real to begin with. And what remains – beneath the vanishing ego – is love, wholeness, and the unmistakable recognition that we belong to one another, because we have always been one.
